MEMORANDA

123 FACULTY OF EDUCATION.

Diploma of Education (Dip.Ed.) .—A post graduate course

of one year, subsequent to the completion of the course for any degree within the University. In this year the subject Education, consisting of two Divisions. A (General) , and B (Special) , each of five parts, is taken.

Certificated teachers of the Education Department with satisfactory records, and registered teachers from other schools with five years' experience, may spread the work over two years, taking Parts IV and V of Division A at least in the first year.

All candidates, whether Pass or Honours, must complete all parts of Division A; candidates for Honours must in addition complete any two parts of Division B.

No candidate will be classed unless he has at one examination presented in all the parts of Division A and the required parts of Division B.

Candidates who in one year complete any part of Divi- sion A will receive credit therefor, and may complete the remaining parts of the Division in some subsequent year

or years.

Candidates for the Annual Examination in Education may not sit for any other subject unless they have presented in all parts of Division A, and passed in not less than four of them.

Candidates who prior to the 1st of April, 1936, have completed two years of a degree course may proceed with the course for the Diploma of Education, subject to the following conditions:—

In the course for the ordinary degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Laws, Candidates must have passed in seven subjects, and these must include two sub-major subjects of the Arts course, or one sub-major and two Science subjects ap- proved by the Faculty. In the course for the degree of Bachelor of Science, six subjects must be passed and these must include two parts of each of two graded subjects. In the course for the degree of Bachelor of Commerce, nine approved subjects are required.

As a pre-requisite for admission to Examination can- didates must have attended such demonstrations and taken part in such practical teaching as may be prescribed by the Faculty.

A prize of £25, known as the Dwight Prize, is open for competition to candidates in Education. The Hugh Chil- ders Memorial Prize (value about £6) may be awarded to the candidate ranking next to the winner of the Dwight Prize, provided he obtains first-class honours.

Candidates for registration as teachers of special sub- jects, who are not taking the full course, will be required

1. Candidates for the Degree of Master of Education must before entering upon the course:

(a) Graduate in some other Faculty of the University.

(b) Complete the course for the Diploma of Educa-

tion or a course of training and a period of

1.5 experience approved as equivalent by the Faculty and have had three years' practical teaching experience satisfactory evidence of which must be produced to the Faculty.

2. They shall subsequently pursue advanced studies for not less than two years and comply with the conditions herein prescribed.

3. The subjects of the course shall be:

(1) Psychology of Education and Experimental Educa- tion and two of the following:

(2) Comparative Education.

(3) History and Philosophy of Education.

(4) Administration and Organisation and Method.

Each candidate must select one of the three subjects as a major subject and the remaining two as sub-major subjects and must submit his choice for approval by the Faculty before the 1st March of his first year.

4. During the first year of his course the candidate shall carry out the investigations prescribed by the Faculty in the subjects so approved and shall submit to the Board of Examiners an essay on each of his subjects. The subject and proposed treatment of each essay must be approved be- forehand by the Professor of Education. The three essays must be submitted not later than October 15th of the year preceding that in which the candidate proposes to present himself for examination.

All essays must be forwarded to the Registrar, and not direct to the examiners.

The candidate shall also present himself for examination in the subjects in which his essays have been passed by the examiners in the February following the first year.

A Candidate who passes at one examination in his major

subject and in one of his sub-major subjects and who has

complied with the other conditions set out shall thereby

complete his first year.

5. The second year shall be devoted to the preparation of a thesis the subject and scope of which must be sub- mitted for approval by the Faculty before the 1st May of that year. The completed thesis must be submitted to the Faculty not earlier than the 31st October but its sub- mission may be delayed until some subsequent year.

A candidate whose thesis has been approved by the examiners and who has passed the examination in the remaining subject (if any) of his first year shall thereby complete his second year.

6. Candidates who have completed the first and second years of the course and have otherwise fulfilled the condi- tions prescribed may be admitted to the Degree of Master of Education.

For re-Examination in any section in which the Essay has been passed, £2/2/-.

For Examination in any section which has been deferred owing to rejection of Essay, £4/4/- (£2/2/- to be paid when Essay is re-submitted, and £2/2/- with entry for Examina- tion) .

For Examination of Thesis, £10/10/-, which is deducted

from the degree fee of £12/12/-, if the candidate passes.
