PAPER DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVESThe aims of this paper are to: give a solid understanding of introductory linear algebra and some topics in discrete mathematics; teach techniques which can be applied to a diverse range of problems; and prepare students for higher level mathematics papers. The paper will be delivered via formal lectures and is worth 15 points.
PAPER CONTENT
∗ Systems of linear equations: Gauss-Jordan and Gaussian elimination.
∗ Matrices: matrix operations; matrix inverses.
∗ 2x2 and 3x3 matrices in detail: linear transformations, determinants and applications.
∗ Vector algebra and geometry in two and three dimensions.
∗ Sets and functions.
∗ Revision of trigonometry; complex numbers.
∗ Induction and recursion.
∗ Introduction to number theory: Euclidean algorithm, factorization.
RECOMMENDED FURTHER READING (Not compulsory)
“Elementary Linear Algebra” 9th or 10th Edn by H. Anton.
“A first Course in Linear Algebra” 2nd Edn by D. Easdown. Pearson Education Australia.
Limited copies of the above books will be available for purchase from Bennetts Bookshop. These books will also be available on Desk copy in the Library.
WORKLOAD
Around 10 hours per week, including attendance at lectures and tutorials.
TUTORIALS
You will need to sign up to ONE one-hour weekly tutorial which commence in the SECOND WEEK of semester - Monday 19 July. Blank tutorial lists will be posted on the MATH102 noticeboard in the foyer area next to the G block third floor lift – as each list becomes full it will be removed by the Mathematics Secretary.
*
You must be officially signed into the tutorial you wish to attend or you will be REFUSED ENTRY.Please choose ONE tutorial time only, and write your NAME and ID no. clearly on the list. Each tutorial can accommodate only a limited number of students so if your first choice is full please choose another time.
ASSIGNMENTS
Throughout the semester, a weekly assignment will be posted on the web site, along with some practice problems which will be worked through either by your tutor or the lecturer. Only the assignment problems will be marked, and will contribute to your internal assessment mark. The administration of these assignments will be via the tutorial system. If you have difficulties understanding the lectures or solving the problems, please do not hesitate to ask your tutor during the tutorial. A large part of the tutorial will be taken up with discussing the previous week's assignment problems: no formal solutions are distributed, so the tutorials are important!
Your completed assignments should be put in your tutor's allocated hand-in box near the G block third floor lift, by the due date and time as specified on the assignment. Please ensure you write your ID and name on this.
There will be 10 assignments of which only the best 8 will count towards 20% of the internal assessment mark.
MATH HELP SESSIONS
In addition to the tutorials, the Department provides free Math Help sessions Monday to Friday from 1-2pm in G.B.13 for all 100-level (and most 200-level) Mathematics papers. These begin in the SECOND WEEK of semester and operate from Monday 19 July to Friday 15 October inclusive.
These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for students to get assistance with their understanding of the material in the paper.
ASSESSMENT
Your final mark will be based on both internal assessment (c) and the final examination (f) with a c:f weighting of either 1:2 or 0:1, whichever works to your advantage. The internal assessment mark will consist of ONE Assignment component total (worth 20%) and TWO Tests (worth 40% each) as follows:
Tuesday 10 Aug 7.00pm PWC(MSB.1.04) (worth 40%) Wednesday 6 Oct 7.00pm PWC(MSB.1.04) (worth 40%)
If you miss a test because of illness, you must supply a Medical Certificate (MC) (signed by a Doctor, NOT a Practice Nurse) to the Mathematics Secretary (G3.19); without such a certificate you will be awarded a grade of 0 for the test from which you were absent. If you supply a MC (or other good excuse) in lieu of the first or second test, then your internal assessment mark will have its weighting reduced accordingly, in comparison to the final examination. If you have any doubts about the operation of these procedures, contact the paper coordinator.
Please note: no credit will be given for missed assignments without a MC. With a MC you may gain permission to catch up on missed assignment, but only at the tutor’s discretion.
An unrestricted pass (ie. C or better) will be awarded only to students who achieve both a final mark of at least 50% AND an examination mark of at least 40%.
The date, time and location of the Final Examination will be arranged by Examinations Office (SASD).
Please ensure that you do not miss the Final Examination.
WEB PAGE
Assignments, solutions, lecture slides and notices will be displayed on the class web page:

NOTICEBOARD, HANDOUTS AND RETURN OF MARKED WORKThere is a noticeboard for this paper situated on the 3rd Floor of G Block in the foyer area near the lift.
Computer printouts of your internal assessment marks will be displayed on this noticeboard.
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to check your marks are correctly entered.
TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENTS will be handed back at the following week’s tutorial session - any uncollected work after that session will be placed in the pigeon holes next to 3rd floor lift - beside first year noticeboards.
TEST SCRIPTS to be collected from the SCHOOL OFFICE (GG.19) on the GROUND FLOOR of G Block.
MATHEMATICS SUBJECT FORUM
The Mathematics Subject Forum, which consists of staff and student representatives, meets twice each semester.
It serves as an informal forum for discussion of matters concerning the subject of Mathematics in the University. The student representatives on the Committee also elect, from among themselves, one representative on each of the School Boards of Study.
Elections of two representatives from each undergraduate paper will be held in late July. The lecturer in charge will be responsible for the conduct of elections in their classes, and will act as returning officer.
Your attention is drawn to the following policies and regulations contained in the 2010 University Calendar
