After completion of the first year, the diploma in Education can be taken if necessary. Candidates for the second year must have completed the first year of the course or hold an equivalent qualification. External candidates are normally expected to attend the University for consultation at a time convenient for the staff of the School of Education.

All fees must be paid into the university's account at a branch of the National Bank of Australasia. Many of the books recommended for study or reference are available for use in the library, which also caters for broader reading requirements. Students in the first year of training for the Bachelor of Education degree must indicate whether they intend to present for pass or cum laude in each subject, no applicant may compete for both pass and cum laude in the same subject.

The annual exam timetable will be available a few weeks before the exam starts.

This assistance is also available to students who for some reason do not complete their course, and in these cases special effort is made to enable students to use their university education for work. International House provides Associate membership, which allows students living nearby to become full members, come to the House for meals and tutoring, and enjoy all facilities and privileges. For more information about student houses, please refer to the relevant part of the university calendar and to the administrators of those institutions.

Financial Assistance

The following tables provide an overview of awards other than those described above that are available to degree students. More precise information can be obtained from Appendix 3 or notices in the 1965 Calendar or from the person named in the table.

Awards Available to Education Students Only

Candidates who have qualified for a degree in this University or in any other university recognized for service by the Professorial Board may be admitted to the first year of the course for the degree of bachelor of education. Subject to exemption granted in special cases by the Faculty of Education, no candidate will be permitted to enter the First Year examination unless he must have satisfied the Faculty of Education that he has attended such demonstrations and completed the course practical that can. from time to time to be prescribed by the faculty. No candidate shall be placed on the class list in any examination unless he has passed in that examination all the subjects required under section 4 of this law and except by permission of the Faculty of Education to be granted only in special cases of illness or others. there is sufficient reason, no candidate may enter for honors at more than one annual examination.

To pass the first year a candidate must fulfill one of the following conditions:. a) he passes an annual examination or obtains credit for each subject of the Year; or. b) he will have passed the course as a whole by the faculty in the year. Provided that a candidate in such circumstances shall obtain the approval of the faculty for the subjects of the Second Year of the course for which he intends to enroll.l. 1 The approval of the faculty for & Second-year subject will not be granted if the student has failed in a First-year subject which offers essential preparation-ver itr---.

Candidates may be admitted to the second year of the course who — (i) have qualified for a degree in the University or in any other University. recognized for this purpose by the University, and. ii) to have passed the first year of the course or to have completed a training course approved by the Faculty of Education as equivalent to it. If the faculty is satisfied that a candidate is not engaged in full-time study at the University, the faculty may at its discretion require the candidate to spend not less than three years in fulfilling the requirements for the Second Year. Candidates can be admitted to the Bachelor of Education degree, whose evidence of practical teaching or other educational work since the end of the first year is of the standard approved by the faculty and who have passed the prescribed exams and otherwise fulfilled the above conditions.

A person may be a candidate for the degree of master of education if he — (a) has completed the course for the degree of bachelor of education or has. has completed a course approved as equivalent to it by the Faculty of Education; and. The candidate must attend no less than one academic year of advanced studies that include. a) the preparation and presentation of a thesis, the purpose and subject of which is approved by the professor of education, which makes a substantial contribution to any branch of educational theory or practice; and (b) a course in the theory and method of educational research, unless the faculty. is satisfied that the candidate has previously had adequate training in it; Provided that if the faculty is satisfied that a candidate is engaged in employment other than study at the University, the faculty may require the candidate to spend not less than two academic years pursuing his course for this degree.

FIRST YEAR PRELIMINARY READING

The bridging course is mainly designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to educational institutions in representative national areas. The course is also designed as an introduction to the use of the comparative method in the study of educational institutions. A comparative view of the constitutional foundations of public education. in Australia, the USA, England and the USSR 2) Comparison of the organization of education in England, Australia, the USA and the USSR 3.

A Comparison of the Systems of Public Education Administration in England, the United States of America, Australia and the USSR 4) A Comparison of Secondary Education Curriculum and Pedagogy in Australia, the United States of America, England and the USSR New South Wales Department of Education, Report on the Committee Appointed to Review Secondary Education in New South Wales. Students will need to obtain a study guide and a detailed reading list available on request at.

304. METHODS OF TEACHING

Physical Education: Only students with a degree in Physical Education or a recognized equivalent are eligible to attend. School Orientation: Only approved students who have completed their psychology degree may attend. Essay and one 3-hour assignment on the general method and organization of secondary education; essay and one 3-hour special methods paper.

305.. PRACTICAL TEACHING

Country students, in order to meet these requirements, must undertake, when enrolling on the course, to come to Melbourne for two to three weeks of practical instruction at the time specified by the School of Education. In special cases, with the approval of the Faculty of Education, other arrangements may be made by the Professor of Education to replace the foregoing. Students are expected to achieve a certain standard of efficiency in Practical Teaching during the year.

There is no formal test at the time of the Annual Examination, unless special circumstances warrant the holding of such a test, candidates who normally receive honours, or are returned as passed or failed, according to the standard attained during the year. If a student fails in Practical Instruction, he must undertake whatever extra practice and tests may be prescribed in a subsequent year, and may apply for another test. As a general rule, he will not be allowed to present again until July of the following year.

If he is teaching in an approved school, arrangements may be made for the examination to be held in that school. In all cases the report of his work in his own school will be taken into consideration.

SYLLAВUS

Men: Gymnastics with and without apparatus, rhythmic activities, boxing, wrestling, fencing, athletics, games, swimming, camping, skiing, judo. The most advanced treatment of the work began in Teaching Practice and Observation Part I, with emphasis on teaching practice in secondary schools. The minimum amount of practice will be 75 percent of the number of hours as described in the schedule.

Arrangements similar to those for Part I will be made to allow students to gain the necessary practice. Students can be exempted from this test if their education has been assessed as satisfactory by the director.
