PREF'ACE

This thesis is the lrlstory of an experiment in colonisation v1hich was also an experiment in colonial

defence - the settlement of the Hoyal Uew Zealand Fencibles in a. series of villages just south of the city of AucJ...-..J.and, then the seat of go�I'l'lr.1ent of this cotL"1try.

It does not attempt to cover any clearly delineated poriod, for it is the histo�J of the fm1ciole corps from the tii?le it was envisaged ur�til tl:..e tine when the pensioners had becone absorbed into colonial society; and although the inception can be dated accurately enough - at 1846 - t::-.e process of aosorptiorr cfu---mot be said to have ended at any

given tine. -
