NAPLAN — Availability of school trend graphs

Purpose

To advise schools of the availability of graphs showing the trends in the National Assessment Program

— Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test results for the period 2008–2012. Explanatory notes accompany the graphs.

Background

Prior to 2008, Queensland developed and conducted a state-based literacy and numeracy testing program for Years 3, 5 and 7. With the introduction of a national assessment program in 2008, the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) was given the responsibility for the administration, marking and reporting of the NAPLAN tests. This role includes analysing the test data for Queensland and for each school.

Information

School-specific NAPLAN trend graphs are available in the secure section of the QSA website. They show the performance of students in individual year-level cohorts in your school (Years 3, 5, 7 and/or 9, depending on the cohorts) within the five different NAPLAN assessment areas, year by year since 2002.

NAPLAN began in 2008, so any data shown before this time represents student performance on Queensland Years 3, 5 and 7 Literacy and Numeracy Tests. (Grammar and Punctuation was not assessed separately in the Queensland Years 3, 5 and 7 Literacy and Numeracy Tests.)

Students' raw scores for each test have been transferred to a scale that allows comparisons to be made between assessment areas, from year to year and with the state mean. The use of average normalised scale scores also means that NAPLAN performance data may be compared with Queensland Years 3, 5 and 7 Literacy and Numeracy Tests performance data.

What you need to do

• Access your school's trend graphs from the secure section of the QSA website using your school’s brief identification code (BIC) and password: www.qsa.qld.edu.au/qsa_secure/QSAlogin.do.

• Download the files to the school network and ensure that appropriate security measures are in place to maintain privacy and to avoid unauthorised access.
