It is an honour to introduce you to the Dance '91 Season in which you will see for yourself why the QUT Dance Program is held in such high esteem around Australia.
As a Queensland dance artist working and living 1600km from Brisbane, I congratulate the Dance Program on making this program accessible to residents of Mackay and Rockhampton as well as Brisbane.
The extremely high rate of employment of dance graduates in all areas of the dance profession is a testament to the quality and relevance of the QUT Dance Program. I speak with direct experience, as I have recently employed a 1990 graduate.
As a member of the QUT Academic Advisory Committee, I have become acquainted with the wide range of options available for dance students in this course. I am impressed also by the dynamic mix of stable permanent staff, and short-term guests, both national and international. It is essential to bring in practising professionals of differing styles and philosophical viewpoints to inspire, challenge, confront and support. And so it is appropriate in this season to premiere the creative work of staff members Shaaron Boughen and Dianna Laska-Moore, alongside that of distinguished Queensland choreographers Harold Collins and Pamela Buckman, both of whom return inspired by their respective overseas sabbaticals.
One of the most progressive areas of the QUT Academy programs is the interdisciplinary nature, and the possibilities for cross-collaboration which it offers. Dance '91 Season takes advantage of this with the live musical accompaniment of the QUT Big Band, under Brad Millard.
Although this season is the culmination for the graduating students' years of study, it is but one aspect of the rich and varied performing, educational and academic experiences they have enjoyed. I was privileged to recently observe the "Prime of Life" community dance project in which students in their teens and 20s shared their social dance and lifestyles with older members of the community who reciprocated by sharing social dances of the 40s and 50s. It was an exhilarating inter-action of youth and age. This is but one example of the projects undertaken by the Dance course to make their work meaningful to the wider community.
I would like to congratulate the staff and students, not only on this performance season, but for their ongoing commitment, the high profile, innovative projects, and varied opportunities for personal development, which have occurred throughout 1991.

Folk Dances
Hungarian Suite
Elements of different folk dances and steps have been combined and woven into a dance suite which, although not a tradiational folk dance, portrays avery strong Hungarian Style as its base.
Take Your Partners
The centre for clogging in North America is the area of the Appalachians in North Carolina. In this type oj'tapping' barn dance, where the typical formation. is a large circle, one can see the influence of the Irish and English immigrants and the body movements and flat tapping of the American negroes.
Dianna Laska-Moore
Dianna is one of Australia's finest folk and character teachers. Her wealth of knowledge comes from a performance career which began in Sydney with Dance Concert and continued in Europe with the International Folkloric Dance Company, based in Amsterdam. Dianna spent 10 years with the Dutch company both as a soloist dancer and later as ballet mistress. Whilst in Europe Dianna completed a course in Polish dance in Lublin, Poland, passing with honours.
Dianna is the Artistic Director of The Australian Folkloric Dance Company which is currently touring the state of Queensland performing for primary school children, As well as her company responsibilities, she is a permanent part- time member of the dance staff at QUT and is also the Ethnic Dance Officer for Queensland. Dianna has created many folk dances for QUT students. "Take Your Partners" has been choreographed especially for this Dance '91 program.

The Waiting Room
My recent overseas study trip to view dance in Europe, Scandinavia and Canada gave me many months to absorb and digest the varied contem- porary European styles found from country to country.
This work, The Waiting Room, is the start of my search for a contemporary style that is truly a part of me. How better to explore a new direction than with young energetic graduating students with enquiring chorea graphic minds, on the brink of their professional careers.
The complexity and harmonic beauty of Shaker Loops by composer John Adams, inspired me towards this work of an imaginative treatment, with tongue in cheek symbolic humour, on birth-
ing, the passage to life and concepts on life before, and after life.
Pamela Buckman
After a distinguished career as a professional dancer with the New Zealand Ballet, Dortmund Opera Ballet, Ballet Victoria and Australian Dance Theatre, Pamela was awarded a Choreographic Development Grant in 1982 to further her knowledge in this area. Pamela has since produced several new works, many of which were for The Queensland Ballet including "Colourwash", and "Savage Earth". In 1991, Pamela was the recipient of an individual professional grant from The Australia Council which included a three month stay in Paris. With added assistance from the Queens- land Government's Arts Division and the Potter Foundation, she extended this period to 6 months to include other companies in Europe, Scandinavia, and Canada.

You Bright and Shining Angels
The title refers to my admiration and love of dancers, their dedication- an old fashioned but apt word, and to dance as a great human achievement.
Harold Collins MB.E,
1991 is Harold's twelfth year as Artistic Director of The Queensland Ballet. In 1987 his leadership was recognised when Dance Australia awarded him the best Artistic Director A.D.A.M. Award for his "consistent excellence as Artistic Director of The Queensland Ballet".
Harold trained as a classical ballet dancer, and later was to perform in some of the great ballets choreographed in the style. His distinguished dancing career led him to perform in England, Europe, the United States and Japan. He spent a total of seven years with some of the world's best dance companies. The teachers and choreographers he worked with included Sir Frederick Ashton, Rudi van Dantzig, Sir Robert Helpmann and Sir Kenneth McMillan.
For more than a decade Harold has created ballets using the style of dance which dates in origin back to the French Royal Courts of the 16th century. His considerable talent as a choreographer has been acknowledged internationally with a recent invitation to create a full-length work for the major European dance company the Finnish National Ballet.
Staff and students of the QUT Dance Program are honoured to have a work by Harold for this graduation season. "You Bright and Shining Angels" is the ftrst ballet Harold has created for QUT dance students, although he is a regular visitor to the Dance Program. This beautiful lyrical ballet celebrates dance and offers students a perfect vehicle to display their talents.

Cloudland, Where Are You Now?
The inspiration of music reminiscent of the 40s and 50s gave me the idea to use the QUT Big Band in a production number for Graduation Season.
I had not thought to choreograph such a number, but somehow the work continued to have my name on it. My thanks go to Tammy Meeuwissen and Nicole Arthur for creating the Tap content in 'Cute'. ThankstoAndyArthursandtheQueens- land Conservatorium of Music for recording the Big Band.
Shaaron Boughen
Shaaron has been a full-time staff member of the Dance Program since 1985, and held the position of Acting Head of the Program this year during Susan Street's absence. After training in Brisbane with Patricia McDonald and Mary Heath Shaaron travelled to London to study at the Laban Centre and at the London School of Contemporary Dance. After gaining her Honours Degree in Dance she performed with Journeyman Dance Company and Dance House. Shaaron has also worked as a freelance designer and costumier with the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Ballet Rambert and Extemporary Dance Company. Shaaron updates her teaching and choreographic experience with regular study visits to London and recently New York, and as a guest teacher for Expressions Dance Company.
