Victorian Institute of Engineers

(EsTARI,ISITED 1883.)

1930, MAY 23RD PROCEEDINGS

A General Meeting of the Institute was held at the Kelvin Hall, 55 Collins Place, Melbourne, on 23rd May, at 8 p.m.

THE PRESIDENT (Mr. Roy J. Bennie) occupied the chair.

The minutes of the Annual General Meeting of 26th March were read and confirmed.

A letter from the Secretary of the Supervisors' and Clerks of Works' Association, requesting assistance of this Institute in finding employment for some of its members, was received.

ARCHITECTS' REGISTRATION.—The PRESIDENT said that nominations for new members of the Architects' Registra- tion Board had not been invited until nearly two months after the statutory date. The omission, no doubt, occurred on account of confusion following the death of Mr. Campbell, the late Registrar. But, as a result, there was a doubt whether the constitution of the new Board would be valid. In view of the serious consequences to engineers and others seeking registra- tion during the term of office of members of the new Board, and to their clients, if it should later be proved that the con- stitution of the Board was invalid, the Institute, after failing to secure adequate explanation of the authority under which the Registrar was now acting, had entered protest and conveyed its protest to the Minister.

MR. J. T. WILKINS read a paper entitled "Modern Fire Engineering Practice," and exhibited a large number of instru- ments used in fire detection and fire signalling.

MR. A. E. HUGHES moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr.

Wilkins. Mr. A. E. Battle seconded the motion, which was carried with acclamation.

Messrs. Hughes, Battle, Rowe, and Grove contributed to the discussion.

The meeting terminated at 10.55 p.m.
