PULLORUM TESTED POULTRY FLOCKS, 1962
T HIS year's pullorum tests of poultry flocks have revealed the lowest incidence of reactors since the tests began. Results are recorded below.
Early in 1955, an amendment to the Stock Diseases Act made blood-testing compulsory for all commercial breeding and hatchery flocks of poultry. It was required that the incidence of infection, as determined by the last test before the commencement of hatching, must be less than 2 per cent.
For the seven years 1948-54 when blood- testing was on a voluntary basis the aver- age percentages of reactors were 5.43;
5.65; 5.95; 3.37; 2.53; 1.36 and 0.77 respectively.
This year's test showed an average reaction of only 0.13 per cent.—the lowest figure to be recorded. The 1961 figure was 0.14 per cent.
Only 197 reactors were found in a total of 150,800 birds tested and 20 of the 63 flocks tested were free of reactors. Only one flock had to be tested twice.
It is of interest to note that there was an increase of about 20,000 birds tested during 1962 as compared with last year. Some of this increase is due to the development of the broiler industry and it is estimated that about 20,000 birds tested for pullorum disease were raised solely for the production of poultry meat.
A further 18,000 breeding birds used for the production of meat chickens will be tested later in the year. Previously all breeding stock was tested during the period between January and June.
All chicks sold in Western Australia must be hatched from eggs derived from pullorum tested stock.
The breeds of poultry in the various flocks are indicated by the following abbreviations:—
Australorp, A; White Leghorn, WL; First Cross, FX; Rhode Island Red, RIR;
Light Sussex, LS; Langshan, L; New Hampshire, NH; Various Breeds, VB;
Meat Breed, M.

The neutral nitrogen fertiliser that cuts cost, prevents soil acidity Put Nitro-green into your soil to save on
fertilising cost and make a bigger profit from a bigger yield. This pelleted fertiliser contains 20.5% nitrogen, half in quick- acting nitrate form and half in long-lasting ammonia form. Because of its 35% lime- stone and 5% dolomite content, Nitro- green prevents build-up of soil acidity.
Replaces sulphate of ammonia — offers greater economy and effectiveness. No
need to lime. Easy to handle, free-flowing and dust free. Stores well. Packed in 1 cwt. jute bags with bitumen-paper lining.
