have been synthesi sed by the addition of L to UV- irradiated tetrahydrofuran solutions of the appropriate metal carbonyl. Compl exes of the type -;(C0)

3LBr (III) and h(C0)2L2:Gr (IV) where I-1 = Mn and L = (I ) or (II ) have also been synthesised by refluxing hn(Co)

5Br and Lin a 1 1 molar ratio t o for~

(III) and in a 1 : 2 molar ratio to form (IV) . The

;;J(C0)

5L complexes react with acids HX (where X- = Cl-, Br I-, B§4 or ~F

6-) to give the cationic l igand complexes,

~-/(Co)

5LHX. The conductivi ty of the complexes is anion dependent. The complexes were characterised by Infra-.1:1ed spectroscopy, Visible-UV spectroscopy, 31p nrnr, 1H nmr , 13c nrnr, and I·-1ass-spectra. Excess acid (e.g. HBr) cleaves the P-N bond yielding primarily W(C0)

2Br and the

protonated amine. The complex W(Co)

5L (where L = (I)) acts as a ligand towards Coc12 in the complex ( v(Co)

5L)2coc12 as well as in the bridging complex (W(Co)

5) 2L.
