QUT Fine Art Honours Graduate Show 2008
On behalf of all the Visual Arts staff involved, I would like to welcome you to this exhibition of our Honours graduates, and thank you for supporting these emerging artists at their showcase event. This Honours year is the real test of their ability to begin to engage with the realities of the art world as professional artists. In many ways the work in this exhibition and catalogue can only provide a preview of what we can expect from these artists once they graduate.
However the work exhibited and documented here clearly demonstrates that they are more than ready to take on their chosen careers. It reveals a determination to push the boundaries of how we can think about art, it presents us with unique and innovative visions of what art can be, and it makes us look at the world differently.
These graduates have undergone an experience over the last four years of study that has transformed and enhanced their lives. They have had to confront all manner of questions about art, and test all their assumptions about themselves during this intensive period of study; because there are no simple solutions to the complexities that artists face when they engage in a serious and advanced art practice. Consequently they have developed the essential qualities needed to give some shape to this most elusive of pursuits. Foremost of these is an intelligent and persistent curiosity about the world they inhabit, a flexible and resourceful approach to thinking and problem solving, and an unwavering commitment to exploring the limits of their own imaginations.
Bringing together an exhibition like this from a process that was launched when they began four years ago is akin to managing a controlled crash. The very nature of making this kind of art means that it is always in motion, always just one possibility among many. So what you see in this exhibition are works that are provisionally brought to a halt, works resolved only by the necessity of
exhibition. And this is because these artists think in terms of having a practice, a space for long-term creative and critical engagements with their art and ideas, rather than simply a space for the production of individual cultural artifacts alone. It is this thinking that leads to the diverse, sophisticated and sometimes challenging practices on display in this exhibition
As someone who has worked closely with these graduates over the last 2 years I want to offer them up my own special congratulations. I have great admiration for the way they have fostered a community that will support, challenge, and drive one another well beyond their study with us. They are all ambitious, impressively resourceful and self-sufficient; they have already begun to make their presence felt both on a national and international level.
On behalf of all the staff, congratulations to them all, they have already achieved a level of excellence that will make them outstanding alumni.
