THE MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY UNION,
T H E MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY UNION held its maugural meeting on 2nd June, 1884.
Its objects arc to unite and bring into closer fellowship the members of the different Schools of the University, to enable those who have entered upon their professional careers to keep up an active connection with the University, and to promote the common interests ot Members and the interests of the University.
The membership is open to graduates, undergraduates, members of the Council, members of the teaching and examining staffs (past and present), and officers ot the Mel- bourne University. Civil engineers and solicitors are, for the purposes of this rule, ranked as graduates.
The subscription is 10s. per annum, or £7 7s. for lite membership. Any Member who has rendered distinguished service to the Union may be elected a Life Member by a majority of two-thirds at the Annual General Meeting.
The office-bearers consist of a President, four Vice-Presi- Presidents, and an Executive Committee of ten members.
The Executive Committee appoint from their number a Chairman, two Secretaries, a Treasurer, and a Librarian.
The Executive Committee is chosen as follows :—One from students attending lectures in each year ot the Arts course ; one from students attending lectures in the Medical, Engineering, Law, and Science Schools respectively ; and one resident student from each of the affiliated Colleges.
Tho Annual General Meeting is held at the University, on a day fixed, by the Committee, during tho third week from the commencement of the February term, when the report and balance-sheet of the retiring Committee are received, Office-bearers elected for the ensuing year, and general busi- ness transacted.
The Melbourne University Review is the organ ot the Union, and is issued once in each term. I t is supplied gratis to all Members of the Union, and to non-members at the rate of one shilling per number.
A house within tho University grounds has been handed over to tho Union by the Council, and contains a sittingroom, smoking room, bathroom, and rooms to which students may

retire for private studies. The sittingroom is supplied with the leading daily and weekly papers. There is also a Cir- culating Library in connection with the Society.
A series ot debates and a winter course of lectures by distinguished members of tho various professions are arranged annually by the Committee.
During the year several Smoke Nights and Ladies' Socials are held, and the Union also joins with the other Societies of the University in holding a University Ball and Students' Nights. An arrangement has been made with the Musical Society whereby members of the Union may be enrolled as members of the Musical Society without payment of sub- scription.
