Sign of the times for local election candidates

As election signage appears across the Tweed in the lead-up to 29 October poll, Council is reminding candidates and their supporters about State and Council regulations around signage.

Council officers will remove signs from public property if they are not standard-sized corflute with appropriate content or if they are in a dangerous location.

No signs are allowed in Council’s road reserves, either free-standing pole signs or those affixed to trees or street furniture.

Election signs can be affixed to private telegraph poles, however the owner needs to be certain the pole is not owned by an electricity provider as legal action has occurred elsewhere in the State.

All signage connected to power poles will be reported to Essential Energy for their attention and action. Signs can be attached to the walls of houses or commercial buildings, as long as they adhere to size limitations in State regulations and are not attached to heritage or draft heritage items.

Any signs that do not comply with the above rules may be impounded by

Council officers and will attract a Council fee for retrieval.

Council officers will undertake a program of compliance and monitoring.

All posters and signage containing electoral material must comply with the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008 Subdivision 13 – Election signs.

Playdates a soft introduction to the Gallery

Young children will enjoy a fun introduction to art when a series of playdates are held at Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre during the next three months.

The monthly Gallery playdates at Tweed Regional Gallery, for children aged six months to five years, will use soft toys and activities inspired by the artworks on display. The playdates are a new initiative of the Gallery’s Early Learning Program, which focuses on children up to the age of five and recognises the important role a gallery environment can play in early childhood development.

The playdates, starting on Friday 14 October, will explore the Gallery’s current exhibition Margaret Olley: from the collection, with a specially commissioned set of playful art toys made by local textile artist Helle Jorgensen. Ms Jorgensen took inspiration from Margaret Olley’s artworks and made the toys entirely by hand.

Gallery Education and Audience Development Officer Jodi Ferrari said the playdates were a great way to introduce young people to the gallery.

“Parents or grandparents can use the soft toys for role play or to start talking with their little ones about the artworks. They could even create new stories inspired by their favourite paintings in the exhibition,” she said.

“They could try catching some fish in the nets, making a new still-life scene with flowers and fruit, or play ‘I-Spy’ using the toys to look closely at Margaret Olley’s artworks.”

The Gallery will open slightly earlier on the day of each playdate so families can enjoy a quiet experience in the exhibition.

“The starting time also means older siblings can be dropped off at school first,” Ms Ferrari said.

“Families may also like to take in the collection show A–Z: the alphabet in art as part of their visit – a great way to learn your ABCs.”

The playdates will be held on the second Friday of each month – 14 October, 11 November, 9 December – from 9.30am to 10.30am.

FitzSimons library talk

Best-selling author, former rugby test player, radio celebrity and celebrated sports journalist Peter FitzSimons will present a free talk at Tweed Heads Library on Wednesday 2 November at 11am.

Mr FitzSimons, one of Australia’s best-selling nonfiction authors, will speak at the library to celebrate the release of his latest book Victory at Villers-Bretonneux.

He has written more than 27 best-selling books, including biographies on former Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson and aviator Sir Charles Kingscliff Smith.

A columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald and Herald Sun – and described as Australia’s finest sports journalist – he has also penned books on Ned Kelly, Gallipoli and Tobruk.

Richmond Tweed Regional Library Acting Area Librarian Christie Campbell said it was exciting to host the high profile author with a long and diverse career.

“His latest book tells the story of Anzac Day 1918, when the town of Villers-Bretonneux falls to the British defenders. It is the Australians who are called on to save the town and the entire battle,” she said.

Copies of Victory at Villers-Bretonneux will be available for purchase on the day and light refreshments will be provided.

Bookings are essential and can be made by calling Tweed Heads library on (07) 5569 3150.
