The University started in 1966 with more than 400 students and approximately 90 academic staff. To that tune, the academic work of the University is organized into four Schools - Language and Literature, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences. On 1 January 1991, as part of the restructuring of higher education in South Australia, Flinders Un1vers1ty merged with the Sturt campus of the former South Australian College of Advanced Education. Each Faculty 1s governed by a Faculty Council chaired by an elected Head of Faculty and joint representatives of the academic and general staff and students.
22rn and the university has one of the best records for an Australian un1vers1n attracting external research funding on a per capita basis.
