3.3 Soil and climate
The land belongs to Agro-ecological region of 'Madhupur TractS (AEZ 28) of Nodda soil series. The soil was sandy loam in texture having pH 5.46- 5.62. The mean temperature of the growing period was 23.59° C with average maximum and minimum being 29.7°C and 17.47°C respectively.
3.4 Experimental design and layout
The study was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. The plant to plant distance was 40cm and line to line distance was 60 cm.
The total land size was 340 rn2 and unit plot size was 102 in2. The plot to plot distance was 1.0 m. The genotypes were randomly distributed to each row within each line.
3.5 Seedbed preparation and raising seedling
The sowing was carried out on 21 October 2011 in the seedbed; before sowing seeds were treated with Bavistin for 5 minutes. Seedlings of all genotypes were raised in seedheds in the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka-1207 farm Unit.
Recommended cultural practices were taken up before and after sowing the seeds.
When the seedlings become 25 days old; those were transplanted in the main field.
3.6 Field preparation
The experimental plots were ploughed and brought into a fine tilth and raised the nursery bed, applied the recommendcd dose of fertilizers and farm yard manures (FYM). Seeds were sown in rows spaced at 10 cm apart. beds were watered regularly.
Seedlings were raised using regular nursery practices.
3.7 Layout of the experiment
The experiment was laid out and evaluated under field condition during Rabi 2011- 12 in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCI3D).

3.8 Land preparation
The experimental plot was prepared by ploughing with tractor followed by harrowing and laddering by cows. Weeds and stubbles were removed. Manures and fertilizers were applied as per the recommended dose before the final land preparation. Irrigation channels were made around each plot. The final land preparation was done on 13 November 2011.
3.9 Sowing and transplanting
The seedlings were raised in the seedbed in usual way and 25days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 16th November 2011 The transplanted seedlings were watered regularly to make a firm relation with roots and soil to stand along.
3.10 Manure and fertilizer
Application of manures and fertilizers were done following standard recommendations. However, the doses of fertilizers and manures recommended for the experimental site were as follows:

At the time of land preparation, whole quantity well discoposed of cowdung, mustard oil cake, triple super phosphate (TSP). Murate of potash (MP) and half of the urea were applied to the field. Rest half of that urea were applied in two installments in equal quantity as ring placeplant method. The first installment was 35 days after transplanting, and the second installment was given a week before flowering. In this study fertilizer was applied as per the recommendation of Bangladesh Agricultural
Research Institute (BARI). The following doses of fertilizers and manures were applied to the plot for tomato cultivation.

3.11 Irrigation management
After transplanting the seedlings were properly irrigated for 4 consecutive days. Then flood irrigation was given to the plants after each top dressing of urea. Final irrigation was given during active fruiting stage.
3.12 Intercultural operations
When the seedlings were well established, l mulching and weeding were done uniformly in all the plots. Second weeding was done after 20 days of the first one.
Mechanical support was provided to the growing plants by bamboo sticks to keep them erect. During early stages of growth, pruning was done by removing some of the lateral branches to allow and plants to get more sunlight and to reduce the selltshading and incidence of increased insect infestation.
3.13 Plant protection measures
During the cropping period, since there was no significant pest infestation in the field, hence no control measure was undertaken. In order to prevent disease infestation.' Ripcord' was used for 6 times at an interval of 7 days from 25 December to I
J:ebruary 2012. 'l'here were different types of weeds which were controlled effectively by hand weeding.
3.14 l-Iarvesting and processing
Harvesting continued for about one and a half month because fruits ofdiffercnt lines matured progressively at different dates and over long time. The fruits per entry were allowed to ripe and then seeds were collected for future use.
