RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

4.2.4 Number of tillers planf'

Out of 40 hybrids only nine showed significant heterosis over mid parent regarding number of tillers hill'. Among the significant heterosis five combinations: 1R73328A18R 1681 It (58.46%), I3RRI3A/BRRI I 2R (29.37%), 1R73328A/BRRI I 7R (22.43%), 1R73328A/BRRI 1 2R (21.33%), and BRRI3A/BRRII2R (19.35%) were exhibited positive and desirable values. Rest four hybrids were possessed negative heterosis which is mostly undesirable for the trait concerned. In case of heterobeltiosis eight hybrids were observed significant in which only two were positive and rest 6 were negative heterosis (Table 8). The hybrid 1R73328A/3R1681R calTied high level (43.06%) of positive heterosis followed by BRRI3A/BRRI 1 2R (36.26%) "here the range was -24.67 to 43.06% (Table 8).

The only one hybrid 1R73328A X L3R1681R was played a remarkable role is case of standard heterosis also and it was 29.28% and 43.06% over check variety BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan39 respectively. On the other hand, hybrids:

111 3A/Bft6839-4 1-5-1 R (- 19.86%). BRRI I OA/BR736R (-25.66%), 1113A/BR827R (-22.46) and 1113A/BR827R (-25.69%) were observed high

negative heterosis over mid parent, better parent and check varieties respectively (Table 8).

The mean heterosis over mid parent, better parent and the check varieties were - 1.08%, -3.36%, -2.43% and -3.58% respectively. Lokaprakash Cl 0/. (1992) pointed out the importance of lieterosis of productive tillers on heterosis of yield.

4.2.5 Panicle length

More encouraging results were observed for this trait where 39 nianifested positive mid parent heterosis. Out of 39 significant combinations a total of 31 hybrids were found positive and heterotic values in connection with panicle length. The range of the heterosis lied between -0.21 % to 25.60%. The highest mid parent positive heterosis(25.60%) was expressed by BRRI 1OAJBR6723-l-I- 2R where as lowest, insignificant and negative heterosis found in BRRI I OA/BRRI I 2R.

Twenty hybrids out of 34 had significant positive heterosis over better parents.

On the other hand, none of the hybrids possessed significant heterosis. The highest positive heterosis over better parents observed in the hybrid, 1132A/BR736R (20.44%) followed by BRRI IOAIBR736R (20.16%) and

BRRI9A/BR736R (16.04%) (Table 8).

l'hirty-six hybrids exhibited positive standard heterosis of which twenty-four were significant and desirable direction and none of the hybrid was Found negative value over BRRI dhan33. On the other hand, only seven out of fifteen combinations observed significant and positive heterosis. Where as. among 25 negative heterotic crosses, 12 hybrids were possessed significant but negative values over BRRI dhan39 for this trait (Table 8). The range of the standard heterosis for panicle length was -1.64% to 18.62% and -0.12% to 9.14% in case of BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan39 respectively. The highest positive heterosis

'lj

was manifested by the hybrid, BRRI3A!13R827R (18.62%), followed by BRRI9A/BRI68A (18.11%), BRRI3A/BRI68R (16.48%) and BRRI9AJBRS27R (-16.23).

The mean heterosis over mid parent, better iarents and standard check were 10.01%, 5.68% and 7.47%, respectively. Lokaprakash et al. (1992) reported that the heterosis of panicle length contributed to the heterosis of yield. Mishra and Pandey (1998) also mentioned that heterosis for seed yield plantd was positive and significant for panicle length and 1000-grain weight.

4.2.6 Number of panicle meter 2
