Course Outline of English-I

The course will be suitable for learners who have a weak foundation of English-are unable to listen to and comprehend instructions, speak clearly and fluently using grammatically correct structures, reading extensively, write coherently in simple English to express their ideas. The course will try to help learners attain basic competence in English.

Duration:

Class room: 160 minutes per week Objectives: To enable students to:

 Listen to English spoken to them and understand instructions, commands, requests etc.

 Speak English to respond to questions asked and express themselves

 Read short texts and answer questions on contents of the text

 Write coherent paragraphs to express their thoughts and feelings

Teaching Methodology:

 Both formative and summative assessment along with the focus on Alternative assessment will be the prime concern.

 The focus would be on procedural knowledge by using the target items in communication.

Contents:

Grammar Midterm Exam Subject-verb Agreement, Tense, Article

Final Term Exam Preposition, Conditionals, Tense, Subject-verb Agreement Reading Mid and Final Exam Unseen Passage Solving through skimming and scanning

Writing Midterm Exam Paragraph Writing (Descriptive and Narrative)

Final Exam Paragraph Writing (Compare & Contrast and Process)

The above will be taught in the context of texts, tasks and activities-and the practice of skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Distribution of Marks:

Final Term Examination 40 marks

Midterm 25 marks

Presentation 08 marks

Class Test 15 marks

Assignment 05 marks

Attendance 07 marks

Total 100 marks

Part A : Reading, Writing and Grammar Test: 15 Marks Reading : Passage Solving (MCQ, Q/A): 2+2 = 4 Marks

Grammar : 1. Tense and Subject Verb Agreement: 0.5 x 6 = 3 Marks 2. Article/ Degree of Comparison (Any one): 0.5 x 6 = 3 Marks Writing : Paragraph writing (Descriptive or Narrative): 5 Marks

Part B : Listening and Speaking Exam: 5+5 = 10 Marks

Total : 25 Marks

Final Term Exam Rubric:

Part A : Reading, Writing and Grammar Test: 20 Marks Reading : Passage Solving (MCQ, Q/A): 6 Marks
