The University of Dhaka is currently one of the leading institutions of higher education in Asia. The Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences (FEES) is one of the newest faculties of the nearly century-old University of Dhaka. Teachers and students at the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences study the earth's physical, chemical and biological systems.

To date, the Department remains the largest academy in the country offering the most advanced geoscience education. Students of the Department must attend a field mapping course in a geologically suitable area (Mainly in Chittagong Hill Tracts and Sylhet) in Bangladesh every year during the BS (Hons) course. This laboratory will be located in a dedicated room in the new 1st floor wing of the department once construction is complete.

The Delta Study Centre, a center of excellence for advanced research on the Bengal Delta, was established under the department in 1991. Students of the department actively participate in the departmental and interdepartmental indoor and outdoor events in the field of games, sports and other cultural activities on a regular basis. Fresh graduates are also given the opportunity to work in the various research projects conducted by the department's faculties at national and international levels.

After they have achieved the required academic qualification, they can be appointed as faculty in the universities of the country.

Admission Procedure

The first year is for course work and the second year is for research and thesis writing.

Instructional Strategies

It covers traditional techniques and advanced concepts and methods such as sequence stratigraphic principles and applications, predictive stratigraphic modelling, quantifying stratigraphy in a mass balance framework, qualitative and quantitative paleoenvironmental reconstructions, estimation of the temporal completeness of the stratigraphic record and an understanding of autogenous dynamics in sedimentary systems. Well log data and observations of cores, well correlation and seismic sequence stratigraphy will support the learning process. The ultimate goal of this course is to characterize the sedimentary basins and evaluate their economic potential through the integration of different disciplines.

Learning outcomes: At the end of the course, the learners will be able to –

Analysis of clastic and non-clastic deposits based on their internal facies architectures, case studies and exercises from field analogues will receive special emphasis. Reason across multiple spatial and temporal scales and can combine pieces of historical information relevant to those different scales into a coherent picture of the formation of a suite of layers. Development of advanced stratigraphic correlation techniques, including predictive models of subsurface stratigraphy, use of geotechnical data in stratigraphy.

Students will learn about earthquake source mechanism, uplift and strain release mechanism, earthquake focal mechanism and paleoseismology and its importance in analyzing earthquake recurrence. Emphasis will be placed on studying the relationship of seismic waves to local geology, and their effects on infrastructure, landforms and river systems.

Neotectonics, monitoring of active tectonic activities in Bangladesh, study of active faults, and understanding of seismicity in Bangladesh and environment related to the geodynamic setting are the key components of this course. Assess the risk of earthquake, tsunami and their impact in Bangladesh 5. Lecture 1-2: History of seismology, its development and scope; branch of seismology.
