Curriculum of courses for the Master of science (MS) in Forestry

Master of science (MS) in forestry will be offered normally to forestry background student in two terms of six month but for non-forestry background student in four terms of six month.

The degree will be offered in two streams: thesis group and non-thesis group. Students in thesis group, shall require a minimum of 28 credit hours for theory and sessional courses and 09 credit hours for thesis research. On the other hand, student of non-thesis group, shall require a minimum of 32 credit hours for theory and sessional courses and 05 credit hours for project work.

In the MS first term, all the courses are compulsory for the students of both thesis and non- thesis group.

In the MS second term, the courses are divided into four major areas ( Specialization) where as follows:

Forest management

Social forestry

Wood science

Genetics and tree improvement

In The second term of both the thesis and non-thesis group a student will decide which Specialization (among four major areas) he/she would undertake and he/she will register all courses from that particular major area and the problem of thesis and project work will also be selected from that major area. After passing the MS degree a student will be awarded the certificate mentioning his/her area of Specialization.

In the second term:

For thesis group, course no, FWT-5201 and FWT-5202 are compulsory in forest

management major; course no FWT-5221 and FWT-5222 are compulsory in social forestry major; course no FWT-5231 and FWT-5232 are compulsory in wood science major and course no FWT-5243, FWT-5244 is compulsory in genetic and tree improvement major.

Each thesis group student will select other requisite courses as optional from among the courses to be offered in the respective major area.

For non-thesis group, course no’s FWT-5201, FWT-5202, FWT-5207, and FWT-5208 are compulsory in forest management major; course no’s FWT-5221, FWT-5222, FWT-5213 and FWT-5214 are compulsory in social forestry major; course no’s FWT-5231, FWT-5232, FWT-5237 and FWT-5238 are compulsory in wood science major; and course no’s FWT- 5243, FWT-5244, FWT-5245 and FWT-5246 are compulsory in forest tree improvement major. Each of the non-thesis student will select other courses as optional from among the courses to be offered in the respective major area.

Each student of thesis group, and non-thesis group will register and start thesis work (09 credit hours) (FWT-5112) and project work (05 credit hours) (FWT-5114) in the first term.
