Course Details
Description
This course is designed in such a way that the students will be able to speak with confidence in different situations. This course includes a variety of oral presentation (mostly formal speeches), including personal account/self-introduction, panel discussion, impromptu, informative and persuasive speaking. Learners will also learn how to lessen anxiety and leave a lasting impression on audiences, whether large or small. The students will read some selective chapters from the recommended textbook. The course mainly focuses on how to make the students speak with poise and spontaneity in public.
Objectives
This course aims at facilitating the students to choose topics, organize and deliver speeches such as Self- Introductory, Informative, Impromptu and Persuasive. The objective of this course is to help the students to –
• use formal language, delivery techniques, non-verbal communication, and visual aids effectively when giving a formal speech.
• gain an understanding of the theory and underlying principles of effective public speaking.
• gain an understanding of the importance of the techniques for adapting messages to a variety of audiences and occasions.
demonstrate an ability to prepare the outline and deliver effective speeches in public.
ILOs
Students will be able to—
▪ use various attention-grabbing strategies when giving a speech in public
▪ establish speaking credibility, create goodwill and have good eye contact with the listeners
▪ conclude speech signalling the end, reinforce the central idea and leave a lasting impression
▪ identify the value of concrete, familiar and vivid wording to increase clarity in communication, select appropriate visual aids for informative and persuasive speech
▪ take part in formal discussion
▪ make effective use of evidence, reasoning and emotional appeals
▪ play roles and show creativity and improvisation in their individual or group performance

Due to students’ limitation to go outside during lockdown embracing health hazard to buy books, all the lecture materials, soft copy of books, videos will be provided online (Google Drive link will be shared before each class on Facebook group page.)

Attendance and Participation Policy
To succeed in this course, regular attendance is required. Please note that missing more than Six (6) classes for any reason may result in a zero for the participation/performance portion of your grade.
Make Up Work
All exams must be completed within the date assigned. If you turn in a paper late on your assigned day, or do not come to class on an exam day or test day, you will be penalized for that assignment, unless an alternate due date has PREVIOUSLY been approved.
Plagiarism
In writing classes, plagiarism most often occurs when students use someone else’s work or use direct reference from internet sources and submit it as their own. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will be treated as such. Any Plagiarized script will immediately receive an F grade.
Class Etiquette
During class meetings please refrain from chatting, texting, reading newspapers, or otherwise distracting yourself or other students from the lecture and from your note taking.
