AN ANALYSIS ON SALLY MORGAN’S RACISM AS ABORIGINE IN
SALLY MORGAN’S NOVEL “MY PLACE”
ABSTRACT
Novel is kind of literature in the form of long prose fiction that describes human life or experiences and is written in an artistic form. The experience of human life is well depicted on novel. The reader can take the lesson from the novel. The novel entitled My Place written by Sally Morgan who tries to recover her Aboriginal identity is interesting to be discussed.
It aims at analyzing Sally Morgan’s racism as Aborigine in Sally Morgan’s novel My Place. The analysis focuses on (1) to describe Sally Morgan’s racism, (2) to explain the effects of racism to Sally Morgan, and (3) to explain Sally Morgan’s ways to overcome her problem of racism.
This study used descriptive qualitative research because the writer described and interpreted the phenomena presented in novel without presenting numeric/statistical data. The technique used was library research. An objective approach was used in this study
because the writer did not need to study about the author’s life, but analyzing the data related to racism in the form of dialogues, quotations, conversations, and actions which presented in novel and further focuses on racism case, how the effect was, and how to overcome racism in
the novel of “My Place” written by Sally Morgan.
The result of study showed that Sally had internalized racism where she was unhappy with the racial stereotype about Aborigine that was same as animal. Interpersonal racism where she was embarrassed by her friend racial prejudice, and systemic racism where she was discriminated by university practices. Then, the effects were she felt angry and guilty which further results her physical reaction. Therefore, it caused heart pounding as she was
discriminated by university. Then, Sally’s way to overcome her problem of racism was using media intervention, in the form of personal life story in an autobiographical novel, and also cross-cultural awareness education where Sally wanted to educate herself about Aborigine.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter discusses background of study, statement of the problems, purposes of the
study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of the key terms. Each
section presented as follows:
1.1 Background of Study
When we were child, we read or listen to the story of people, person, animal, or
something that famous and has specific value message. For example, the story of Malin
Kundang that has his body became a rock, caused by immoral attitude toward his mother, the
message value motivates us to obey our parents. Another example story is Toba Lake. It tells
a story about a dedication and sacrifices of mother towards family, and many other stories
that attract us based on the moral message of the story. Therefore, literature can be one of the
cultural heritages that is told through many kind of field, such as culture, social, economy,
politic, and etc.
Iwuchukwu et.al (2012) defined literature as permanent expressions in words (written
or spoken), specially arranged in pleasing accepted patterns or forms. They are reflection of
norms which could have arisen in society. Furthermore, "literature “represents” “life”; and
“life” is, on large measure, a social reality, even though the natural world and the inner of
subjective world of the individual have also been objects of literary “imitation”"
(Koesnosoebroto: 1988). Therefore, literature offers something in such a way to refresh and
encourage our own thinking, leads us of insights of our own. Novel is one of kind literatures,
and it falls under prose fiction literature. Many people like to read it, for example, the novel
of Harry Potter that already had over 15.000 readers.
Novel is chosen in this study because it seems like a window of the world. Reading
literary work, for example novel, also helps us to understand surrounding, such as; social,
politics, economy, culture, psychology, and etc. Therefore, by reading literary works we may
enrich our lives in all kind of way and fields. We can get the new knowledge, experience,
and new case that we do not know yet but it might happen in our daily life, furthermore we
can inspired by the novel’s writer way to solve that case and help us to understand how
people life, even in the past or nowadays.
Novel uses a language that is beautiful, totality, an artistic comprehensiveness.
Therefore, when reading a novel, we usually demand to operate our intellectual capacity. It
was interesting to be discussed, especially as a language department student. Moreover, the
content of novel usually tells about human daily life, thus all people of any background may
be interested in reading a novel.
The novel entitled My Place by Sally Morgan, an Australian woman notable writer and
artist, and one of the characters in the novel My Place is considered as Aboriginal descent
woman who tried to rediscover her Aboriginal identity is chosen to discuss. Because upon
publication it was immediately achieved best-seller status. It was published by Freemantle
Arts Centre Press in 1988 just before bicentenary celebrations of Australia in 1988, a good
moment to consider that at that time Australia was began a national process of reconciliation
with indigenous Australian people. The novel My Place consist of Sally Morgan’s struggle to
find her way back as an Aborigine, an identity which had been denied her for many years by
her family’s insistence that they were not aboriginal at all.
Racism is interesting to be discussed because racism can happen everywhere and to
everyone, especially people who live in the circumstance of diversity, for example, Indonesia
country which has many ethnics, or University Muhammadiyah of Malang that has many
students from many different ethnics. Furthemore, Racism is expected to give explanation
about social phenomena which is a social action causing conflicts in the society. In this

how was the effect, and how Sally Morgan did overcomes racism case try to be analyzed,
