1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study

Even in the 21st century, Indonesia is one of the countries that still believe in the supernatural life as a mystic and fantasy world. A supernatural life is a myth or legend from the story that is circulating in the community. It can be found in a television program and in traditional tribes such as Karonese, Javanese, Bali. They have the ability to see invisible life. The mystical life examples that have occurred on the television show "The Other World". It is an event that took place in an old building. At 11.59 pm, a mediator and ustad trying to find the truth as to why the building was very dangerous for society. The Ustad tries to bring a mediator into the subconscious so that mediators do not realize that he was in the unseen world. With ustad’s courage and capability, he is asking things that ever experienced by the occupants of the building through a mediator. Then, mediator revealed angrily that the reason why the old building become dangerous because the murder of sadistic conducted by one of the families from the building occupants. After learning of these ustad occupants attempting to restore the building to the place that makes it quiet and make the building does not harm surrounding communities. The courage and ability of an ustad for separating real life from community under control by certain creatures; its same as an existing character in the novel "The Giver".

community did not experience suffering, hunger, war, and also not feeling the color, music or love. The Head elder is someone thinking positive and determined the life of the citizens in their communities so that they do not have the freedom to choose. However, one of the children from the community that has the capability of seeing further so that elected a "Receiver of Memory". He is Jonas. Jonas is a child who has the attitude of a sensitive, thoughtful and intelligent. After being elected as the memory receiver, Jonas follows some training so that he realizes that the community world is a lie. Later, Jonas revolted and wished to restore the world community into the real world. With persistence and great effort that he did, he is able to returns to Earth real communities. A world full of color and happiness.

The story above is taken from the novel The Giver by Lois Lawry. The novel is one of human literature creation. Wellek and Warren (1987:1) say that the novel is a picture of real life and habits and of the time of writing. Some of them are fiction (not real) and not fiction (real). A good novel carries a message for readers who read it. There are two approaches in the intrinsic elements of fiction, and ecstrinsic elements. Nurgiyantoro (1995:11) says the intrinsic elements of the novel are elements – elements (directly) participate to build story.

(15)

Based on the explanation above, the author is interested in discussing about the life of Jonas and his efforts to restore his community into the real world through its ability to look backwards and forwards.

1.2 Problem of the Study

Based on the background of the analysis , the problem of the study may be recognized as follows:

2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Roberts and Jacobs (1995:49) say that novel is a fictional long prose work. In English, novel is adopted from French and Italy to describe these works and differentiate them from middle century and classical romance as a something new. In their books, they also said that there are four fiction aspects, fictional works consist of common elements, they are character, plot, structure and theme.

The novel is a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length in which characters and action respresentative of real life are portrayed in a plot of more or less complexity. Usually defined as a series of events described in a sequence. The novel come from the italian “Novella” and “Novelle” by German. The

meaning is a new thing but now meant as a short story in prose. At this time, novel has the same meaning in Italian and Germani. The Novella generally not as formally experimental as the long story and the novel generally retains something of unity of impresson that is a hallmark of the short story.

From the above statement, Novel is a fictional long prose work that adopted from french and Italy to describe these works and differentiante them from middle century and clasiccal romance as something new.

(18)

sequentially. Finding a sequential or narrative order, however, is only the first step toward the more inportant consideration. The plot is the controls governing the development of the actions. In a well-plotted story, things precede or follow each other not simply because time ticks away, but more importantly because effects follow causes.

From the above statement, plot is the parts that the conflict raising is climax in a story, but in this paper explained that the plot has mixed time. The novel story in future time, then flashback and repeat again until finally the plot finished in climax.

Roberts and Jacobs (1995 : 51) say that character is natural facsimile from the human with all good and bad characteristics. A story is usually related to big conflict of the character. It is probable to involve interaction with another character in complicated situation, or with idea or ordinary condition. The character may win, lose, or relevant. He or she can learn and become better for experience or maybe lose point and no change. Furthermore, according to Roberts and Jacobs, character is the verbal realization from human, personality which determines thoughts interview, action, and also comments.

(19)

The characters is revealed by how character respons to conflict, by his or her dialogue and through descriptions. The character in a story are the characters involve from the beginning until the ending part of the story ( plot ).

From the above statement, character is any representation of an individual being presented in draatic or narrative work through extended dramatic or verbal representation. Through action, speech, description, and commentary, authors portray characters who are worth caring about, rooting for, and even loving, although there are also characters you may laugh at, dislike, or even hate.

Rene and Austin (1982:131) say that setting is concerned with the places where story take a place. Setting refers to geographical location of the story, time period, daily lifestyle of the character and climate of the story. Back ground elements can be devided into three main elements, namely a place, time, and social. Backgrounds on the location of the place suggest the occurrence of the events recounted in a work of fiction. The setting is important to give ealistic impression to the readers, created a certain situation at a glanced is really happened.

3. ANALYSIS

Wellek and Werren (1973: 75) say that intrinsic appoach is the emphasis on the analysis of the text. Intrinsic approach starts from the literature. History of modern literature develoved after the emergence of romanticism. The intrinsic approach describes the elements of prose that pictured before. In intrinsic approach, the critic is mainly concerned with the form, language, style, symbols, images, contrasts, structure and development of plot in a literary work. Words on the page are of utmost importance for him. Intrinsic approach is also called formalism as the critic’s basic interest is in the form of the text.

Wellek and Werren (1973:75) say that the approach is based on the intrinsic structural of point of text and literature. This means the intrinsic approach emphasizes the inter text analysis by describing the elements of prose that described previously. Relationship with the art of literature and art of music is very diverse and complited. Sometimes they influence each other. Theory of art and taste can be studied and related to the theory and literary tastes of artist. Besides the issue of sources and influences, inspiration and coorperation, there is another problem, namely literary works often produce the same result with the result of a painting and musical. The term is just as vague metafon.

(21)

Every human being has a purpose in life. It all started from a blank value to be a great value, as an example of a new baby is born until he can try to walk and pronounce a sentence by sentence. It was all undergone the process, this process is called struggle.

Samuel Smiles (1859) said that the battle of life is, in most cases, fought uphill; and to win it without a camp were perhaps to win it without honor. If there were no diffliculties there be no success; If there were nothing to camp for, there would be nothing to be achieved.

In this world it is impossible people who experience a success without beginning with the struggle. In the struggle, there is a wide range of obstacles that must be traversed. The more often experience a variety of problems, so the stronger we are. This is what is called life, so don't give up easily or hesitate when got in trouble. Think and reflect on what should be done to be able to get what it wants is the main thing in resolving the problem, not by thinking about the failures and mistakes that we get.

The struggle is a part of life. through the process where all of we do is struggle. Believe me, because every struggle in complement with positive beliefs that there is an end which is always expected, such as happiness and success.

From the above statement, it can be concluded that the struggle of life is to do an act with full support to grab something that we want without relentlessness.

(22)

ability given to humans, then this shows that humans are capable of receiving, storing and raises again the experiences of hers. Raises the back experiences ever experienced, as well as gave rise to return something that never happened and stored in memory.

Memory is a function of the brain involving cognition in retrieval of information. Memories will be studied more in depth in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. In General, most experts viewed the recall as the relationship between experience with the past. What he has in mind is that once experienced, never dipersepsinya, and it never entered into his soul and then stored at a time the incident inflicted back in consciousness. Memory is the ability to receive and incorporate (learning), save (retention) and raises again what ever experienced (remembering).

The process of Encoding (encoding against what perceived by means of changing into symbols or certain electric waves which corresponds to the rank of the organism). So encoding is a process of changing the nature of the information into the form that correspond to the properties of the organism's memory. This process greatly influences the length of an information stored in memory.

(23)

and knowledge into his memory. For example; as a student, where deliberately the student is included everything that he had learned in college.

From the above statement it can be concluded that memory is the ability to receive and incorporate (learning), save (retention) and raises again what ever experienced (remembering).

3.1 Jonas in The Fantasy World

Jonas is a smart man who – 12 years old. At school, Jonas was a vigorous

and active student in learning so that he obtained the level of increased observations over the last year. Jonas also achieves in the race caught the ball. He always thinks before acting and speaking, as well as take – heart in expressing what he will say when communicating with others, with different friends. Jonas also has a serious mindset about life. For example, he was able to see something that cannot be seen by others, such as looking at the color of life.

" we are all aware that Jonas has been a top student throughout his school days” ( Lois Lawry, 2014: 80)

(24)

Jonas is also an obedient child in running community’s regulations. For

example when an occurrence of aircraft through the community, the Chairman ordered the residents to go into a nearby building and residence there. After hearing the command Jonas immediately dropped his bike lying oblique way of walking behind his family's residence. He ran to enter and dwell there.

“ Then all of citizens had been ordered to go into a nearest building and stay there." IMMEDIATELY, " the rasping voice through the speakers had said." LEAVE YOUR BICYCLE WHERE THEY ARE. " Dutifully and without delay, Jonas dropped bike.”( Lois lawry, 2014:12)

Jonas has a curiosity eminence. One example of such nature is when Jonas first training stint, he was introduced about the snow and sled. After Jonas knows it, he kept asking how and why the snow train in their communities, they do not have it. He also said that like to know many things from the events – past memories of events such as, color, war, music, etc.

“Are you saying that I – I mean we could do it again?” Jonas asked, “

I really like to. I think I could steer, by pulling the rope.” ( Lois Lawry, 2014: 104 )

(25)

"Jonas," said chiefs head, " the training required of you involves pain. Phisycal pain.” (Lois Lawry,2014:80)

Jonas is a child who always thinks positive in many respects. It can be seen from the example of welcome ceremonies 12, it is in December right in the age of Jonas already 12 years. He's concerned with ceremony 12 namely that determines his Commission for the future and the most important ceremony in the community. He is worried if in such ceremonies does not get the assignment. But Jonas trying to think positive that December is a special month for him and would soon happen. "worry, break up Jonas. That's what I felt. " (Lois Lawry,2014:15)

Jonas is persistent boy in reaching what he wants. One example of the attitude of his persistent when travelling towards Elsewhere. Jonas walked up the Hill, he was knocked down and his feet scratched his knee sprains, and hurt. Jonas is tired and feels the hunger however, Jonas is still trying to stand up and continue the journey with the cycled past the Hill – a hill. He believes that he can towards the border of memories (Elsewhere)

" Pedaling the bike now it took to struggle because Jonas is getting weak. Earned Jonas standing and enforcing the bicycle ". (Lois Lawry, 2014:204)

(26)

on the plant, when green entered his consciousness, Jonas focuses on color and holds his views as long as possible until his head pain and the color fades.

"Maybe the Jonas can understand, because the recipient is now our know that Jonas already has these qualities. He mentioned the ability see more. " (Lois Lawry. 2014:81)

Jonas is one of the students in their communities. He was also selected as the recipient of the memory in his Commission. Jonas attends training in his Commission for 1 year. Jonas was the first child of 2 brothers. His father worked for the parenting place on duty to be responsible for all the physical and emotional needs of each new child at the time of their lives. While his mother worked in a Department of Justice. Jonas has a tall body and fair skinned. Jonas also has a pale eyes.

(27)

3.2 Jonas was Selected as The Recipient of Memory.

On December, the ceremony 12 for the community has been held in an auditorium building. Throughout the compulsory community residents attended the ceremony. Some of the celebrations which will be held on the ceremony of the 12 are: First, a celebration for the release to Elsewhere respecting the elderly that they have dedicated their lives to the beauty and harmony of the community. Second, the celebration of the new children that are the result of team work and community pride genetic generated by expectant mothers. Third, a celebration of children aged 9 years, that a child should receive the symbols of the development of self-reliance and responsibility. And last is the celebration of the day of the graduation ceremony, namely 12 where in the ceremony that every child aged 12 will get the assignment or placement for the future in the community. To determine a person's job, has been determined by character factors, energy level, and ability to interact perfectly.

Jonas hopes that he gets a job/assignment of importance in the community in celebration of graduation. When the Chairman announces about the assignment for a child of twelve, Chairman missed Jonas’s number 19. Chiefs

(28)

shame that he feels has no assignment. Jonas was trying hard to think what fault he already did.

"He skipped me, Jonas though, stunned. Had he hear wrong? It is not. There was a sudden silence in the audience, and he knew that the entire community realize that the Chairman has continued from eighteen to twenty, missed one number. Jonas looked down and thought hard. Error what is he do? ... (Lois Lawry,2014:74-75)

But moments later the community Chairman said to Jonas that he apologized for having made his suffer and his citizens anxious. Chairman embraces Jonas and says to the whole society that Jonas is already selected as the next recipient of the memory. In their community, they have only one Receiver memory.

"Then the Chief Elders continue." Jonas already elected. " With a voice firm and authoritative, elder Chief announced, "Jonas became the recipient of our memory the next." (Lois Lawry,2014:77)

Jonas was elected as one of the "Recipients of Memory ". It can occur because Jonas has the ability and quality in him. Some qualities possessed intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and tremendous capabilities i.e. the ability to see further the capability which could not be explained, but the Chairman credences on Jonas that he could understand it. Then, the Chairman and his community confident that Jonas is able to undergo the training to be provided by a giver of memory.

(29)

In addition, as a recipient of the memories he had to comply with some of the tasks list that already made by the Chair of the community. The task list they are every day after school hours end, Jonas should immediately go to the entrance of the Pavilion behind the House of the elderly and to meet officials there, immediately went to his home after the end of the training hours per day. From now on Jonas are exempt from the rules governing the irreverence, Jonas could ask any question to any citizen and he would get an answer, is not allowed to discuss the training with other members of the community including parents and the elders, from now on he is forbidden recounts his dream, except for illness or injuries that are not related to the training, do not ask for any treatment, jonas should not apply for a waiver jonas is allowed lying.

“ Jonas Receiver Memory. " ... Immediately go to your after hours training end up every day, from now on you're exempt from rules governing the irreverence ... you're allowed to lie, "(Lois lowry, 2014:88)

(30)

3.3 The Effort of Jonas in The Real World

The Giver is someone who will give you some training must be undergone by a receiver of memory. The giver also explains that he is going to give you the life that has happened in the past before the formation of the community. Life is a recollection of the whole world. The Giver gives memories of his past to Jonas by way of sitting face to face in a room and hold hands with Jonas.

On the first training, Jonas was introduced memory of snow, The giver holds the hands of Jonas, then Jonas feel that he is the real world. He was surprised because all this he does not know what the snow and sled is. According to Jonas, the snow is something tiny, cold, white, and he saw a brilliant Crystal rain vortex of air around him. After receiving the recollection, he's very happy Jonas doesn't know what he will do. The Giver jonas assured that the training provided will not feel pain.

"Close your eyes. Rilex. This will not hurt. "

"Jonas could see, though his eyes are closed. He could see the brilliant Crystal rain swirl in the air disekelingnya. "sled, Jonas suddenly knew. I didn't try it earlier, because it was all so new. " (Lois Lawry, 2014:102-104)

(31)

"No happy snow pierced the air travel, but it tastes delicious and convenient. Rays of the Sun. The words of Jonas hard – hard, her eyes open. And the origin of the sky. " Add jonas. (Lois Lawry, 2014:107) The next training is training provided with the pain. But with courage and a strong sense of curiosity, Jonas was able to receive the training. Jonas is a place, he is recline and feels a few hours under the Sunlight. His skin felt stung. He's restless and moving next to the arm, hug him, and feel the pain that pierced the folds on the inside sleeve pocket. Jonas feels pain from sunburn and makes him feel pain.

"Ouch," he said out loud .... "it hurts," he tells the man and "I could not get the word." It's the last burning sun, "said the old man to Jonas". It feels very sick. Said Jonas (Lois Lawry,2014:108)

Jonas can apply the color from some examples, like the hair of fiona, and from the apples. When Jonas realized he already saw the color he can think would like to see the colors are lit because according to Jonas colors can create a difference. And they can choose to make a difference than similarity. Jonas also learns in his ability see further by training he has lived.

"But, having now I can see colors, at least sometimes I think: what if we could show them the Red scarlet, Scarlet or yellow, and he can choose? Rather Than Similarity. (Lois Lawry,2014:121)

(32)

that during this time he and the society have been protecting people from the wrong choice.

"Definitely not safe," said Jonas with conviction. " What if they are allowed to choose their own spouse? And their selection wrong? (Lois Lawry, 2014:122).

Jonas really feels the pain of the real world. Jonas is confusing, noisy places, rowdy and foul-smelling. By that time the Sun was shining in the morning, and the air was thick smoke that hangs by a yellow and Brown above ground level. Jonas saw people who were lying groaning, wild eyed horses with his bridle strap torn and hanging. Jonas heard the voice of a boy that sprawl uniformly grey shiny wet by fresh blood. The boy asked for water with a weak whisper voice and a torrent of new blood soaked the coarse fabric and on sleeves. Jonas crippled by pain, and through the sleeves are torn apart. The noise continues surrounding them, the screams of people-people who are injured, appeal asking for water, call upon the name of the mother, and death. Jonas heard the bang of the gun. He was overwhelmed and not powerful by the pain. Jonas lies amid the smell of a scary hancing during joined, and he sees the people and animals were killed, as well as understand the meaning of war. And finally Jonas not withstand. He was also delighted to welcome death.

".... the boy stared Jonas." Water, "she begged again. When he spoke, bursts of new blood soaks the fabric is rugged and on sleeves ... " (Lois Lawry,2014:145)

(33)

alone in his room and noticed from his window. See the children playing, the citizens cycling, a normal life free from suffering. But he has no right to select it. Then The Giver tried to convince Jonas by reminding about good memories that is something good and beautiful until jonas experience so much happiness. Jonas saw a birthday party, a child celebrates his own birthday, so he understands a happiness becomes an individual that special, unique, and proud. Jonas visits a museum with full-color paintings so that he can recognize the colors. He walked through the forest with a campfire. Although Jonas is already undergoing recollection of pain because of loss and loneliness. Jonas also got understanding of loneliness and the beauty of aloneness. Jonas is in a room full of people, and the air is warm and full of light colors. Jonas enjoying the warm and pleasant memories. Real life that now he is appreciated.

“.... He visited the museum and see colorful paintings that now he could recognize and mentioned his name. ... "what did you catch? '' asked The Giver." warmth, "replied Jonas," and bliss. " (Lois Lawry,2014:148)

(34)

memories, memories of real life. Jonas knows that to get there it's not easy but different. No memory for something like that. " "I'll take – heart," said Jonas. (Lois Lawry, 2014:190)

The first attempt Jonas did was to get Gabe, a child who will be released (murdered) because of insufficient and did not have the requirements to continue her life. One of his friends try to stop Jonas when he will leave his community environment by breaking a curfew. Jonas hit him, until his friend is located on the ground. Then Jonas up the bike towards the Nurturing Center. There Jonas gets Gabe and goes away. After the community knowing that jonas escape, Guards were sent to search for Jonas and told Jonas now becomes "dangerous" for the community. However, Jonas did not think about it again, Jonas went headed to shelter of The Giver and tries to pass Elsewhere; the border of community life with the real life. Jonas cycled toned endlessly, strengthen his self in order not to feel tired over time and distance. Jonas trying hard and rely on what he has.

(35)

Jonas kept trying to find a place where it will turn the community into the real world. He surrounds the life – life and the dark, empty streets that stretch longer, the street-side trees until he was tired. Especially when the plane searchers came Jonas hoped to receive courage. For Jonas, the trip was already an automatic activity, sleep in the day, protected in the search tree, shrubs, water rationing the remaining food carefully, plus what could be found in grass and looking for a hiding place. Jonas strives and struggles to remain strong through this even though he has already felt the pain in his body.

“.. he skirted community isolated residence they are dark. The feet of jonas was originally a pain; then by the time running, his legs felt numb fingers. (Lois Lawry,2014:199)

Asher is one of the communities that commissioned by the early community to use drones to find Jonas. Asher found Jonas in the forest and catch him with a drone. Jonas asked Asher in order to let go and think that Jonas cares on him. Asher brings Jonas into the river and let go. Jonas stumbles something on Elsewhere and passed the road which is full of struggles, bumpy and narrow roads to reach the goal. But he stuck it out despite a fall and his knee scraped. Jonas passed the trees, and the forest road along the dark and full of mystery. In addition, Jonas also feel hunger. Jonas weakened by lack of food and his leg sprains. Even so, he still runs with a passion. Jonas sees rain which Jonas had never seen rain.

(36)

Jonas is confident that it will soon towards that place even though he just saved a little hope to be able to achieve it. Hope of jonas is reduced when a sharp cold start attached to his body, thickened with a white color that the Lunar. Jonas stopping his bike with a jaded. Jonas stands frozen. He opened his own, with anxious Jonas climbed his bike back past the steep hill rising to the fore. The Hill will make climbing difficult and challenging. Snow piled up quickly cover up the narrow path and make the trip was impossible to do. Jonas alert and tried to warm himself only briefly, after he already against lethargy and resignation and restores his desire to survive. He's trying to run faster with both feet he can't already feel.

“... Jonas stands frozen on thicken around, Jonas opens his own, with anxious Jonas climb his bike back. Steep hill rising to the fore. In the best condition the Hill will make climbing difficult and challenging. (Lois Lawry,2014:210)

(37)

Jonas realized with certainty and happiness that the Middle down there waiting for him. When it was, for the first time jonas heard something he never know. It was the music. After he reached the destination, a community located behind place Jonas turns into colored and back to the real world.

4. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGETIONS 4.1 Conclusions

After analyzing the novel The Giver by Lois Lawry can be concluded that Jonas is a boy who aged 12 years and became one of the members in a community. Jonas is a smart, persistent, has a sense of empathy, obedient to Community regulations, against loyal subjects has curiosity, brave, positive thinking, and has a strong tenacity. One of the very interesting things from Jonas is Jonas had the ability to see more, namely a capacity to be able to see what happened in the past and in the future. Jonas Also has eyes bearing a pale, tall and fair skinned. In his commission the ceremonies held on 12, Jonas is selected as the recipient of the memory. BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR

Lois Lowry is a popular children's book author responsible for such critically acclaimed titles as 'The Giver' and 'Number the Stars. Lois Lowry was born on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She published her first novel, A Summer to Die, in 1977. After this serious drama, Lowry showed her lighter side

with 1979's Anastasia Krupnik, which became the first in a series of humorous books. She won her first Newbery Award for the 1989 novel Number the Stars. In 1993, Lowry received the honor a second time for The Giver, which would eventually become a 2014 film. More recent works include Son (2012) and Gooney Bird and All Her Charms (2013).

Early Life

(44)

Number the Stars to the lighthearted adventures of Anastasia Krupnik to the

fantastical The Giver.

A shy and introverted child, Lowry loved to read. She was around 8 or 9 years old when she decided she wanted to be a writer. Her father was a dentist and Army officer, which led to her to live in several different places growing up. Lowry spent some of her school years in Japan, but she ended up graduating from a New York City high school. She then spent two years at Brown University before dropping out to get married.

Career Beginnings

At the age of 19, she married naval officer Donald Lowry. The couple moved around a lot because of Donald's military career. Along the way, they had four children: daughters Alix and Kristin and sons Grey and Ben. Lowry was living in Maine with her family when she decided to finish college and eventually earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Maine in the early 1970s.

In 1977, Lowry published her first novel, A Summer to Die, which was based on her own experience of losing her older sister Helen at a young age. She was also going through some personal changes around this time, as she and her husband got divorced. Two years later, Lowry launched her popular humorous series of novels featuring Anastasia Krupnik. She later developed another series featuring Anastasia's younger brother Sam.

to live with her grandfather during World War II while her father is off serving in the military. Lowry's pregnant mother took her and her older sister to live with her grandparents during the war as well while her father was stationed overseas. She and her family later rejoined Lowry's father and lived in Japan for a time after the war.

Award-Winning Novels

Lowry's career reached new heights with the 1989 historical novel Number the Stars. The book explores the Nazi takeover of Denmark during World

War II. The narrator, Annemarie Johansen, is friends with a Jewish girl named Ellen. She and her family help hide Ellen from the Nazis when they begin to round up Jewish citizens. Annemarie also ends up helping Ellen and her family escape from Denmark. Lowry received the prestigious Newbery Award for this work.

Four years later, Lowry published one of her best known novels, The Giver. The story takes the reader to a future community where there's no war and

poverty but everyone's lives are tightly controlled. A young teen named Jonas becomes an apprentice to the title character, the only person with access to memories of the past.

Personal Loss

Lowry experienced a tremendous loss in 1995. Her son Grey, a U.S. Air Force pilot, died in a plane crash. Grey's daughter Nadine was only a toddler at the time of his death. Despite her grief, Lowry sought to make a book for her granddaughter about her life with her father. She explained to Publishers Weekly that the act of digging through family photos for the project inspired her to reflect on her own life. The result was the 1998 memoir Looking Back.

Movie Adaptation of 'The Giver'

In 2002, Lowry launched another successful children's book series with Gooney Bird Greene. The book's title character is a quirky and adventurous

elementary school student. More recent titles in the series include 2011's Gooney Bird on the Map and 2013's Gooney Bird and All Her Charms. Lowry also

worked on promoting the movie adaptation of her novel The Giver. The 2014 film stars Brenton Thwaites as Jonas with Jeff Bridges as the title character and Meryl Streep as the Chief Elder.

SUMMARY OF THE NOVEL

The giver is written from the point of view of Jonas, an eleven-year-old boy living in a futuristic society that has eliminated all pain, fear, war, and hatred. There is no prejudice, since everyone looks and acts basically the same, and there is very little competition. Everyone is unfailingly polite. The society has also eliminated choice: at age twelve every member of the community is assigned a job based on his or her abilities and interests. Citizens can apply for and be assigned compatible spouses, and each couple is assigned exactly two children each. The children are born to Birthmothers, who never see them, and spend their first year in a Nurturing Center with other babies, or “newchildren,” born that

year. When their children are grown, family units dissolve and adults live together with Childless Adults until they are too old to function in the society. Then they spend their last years being cared for in the House of the Old until they are finally “released” from the society. In the community, release is death, but it is never

described that way; most people think that after release, flawed newchildren and joyful elderly people are welcomed into the vast expanse of Elsewhere that surrounds the communities. Citizens who break rules or fail to adapt properly to the society’s codes of behavior are also released, though in their cases it is an

occasion of great shame. Everything is planned and organized so that life is as convenient and pleasant as possible.

Twelve, when he will be given his official Assignment as a new adult member of the community. He does not have a distinct career preference, although he enjoys volunteering at a variety of different jobs. Though he is a well-behaved citizen and a good student, Jonas is different: he has pale eyes, while most people in his community have dark eyes, and he has unusual powers of perception. Sometimes objects “change” when he looks at them. He does not know it yet, but he alone in

his community can perceive flashes of color; for everyone else, the world is as devoid of color as it is of pain, hunger, and inconvenience.

At the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas is given the highly honored Assignment of Receiver of Memory. The Receiver is the sole keeper of the community’s collective memory. When the community went over to Sameness—

its painless, warless, and mostly emotionless state of tranquility and harmony—it abandoned all memories of pain, war, and emotion, but the memories cannot disappear totally. Someone must keep them so that the community can avoid making the mistakes of the past, even though no one but the Receiver can bear the pain. Jonas receives the memories of the past, good and bad, from the current Receiver, a wise old man who tells Jonas to call him the Giver.

The Giver transmits memories by placing his hands on Jonas’s bare back.

richness and meaning to the people he loves. But in exchange for their peaceful

existence, the people of Jonas’s community have lost the capacity to love him

back or to feel deep passion about anything. Since they have never experienced real suffering, they also cannot appreciate the real joy of life, and the life of individual people seems less precious to them. In addition, no one in Jonas’s community has ever made a choice of his or her own. Jonas grows more and more frustrated with the members of his community, and the Giver, who has felt the same way for many years, encourages him. The two grow very close, like a grandfather and a grandchild might have in the days before Sameness, when family members stayed in contact long after their children were grown.

Meanwhile, Jonas is helping his family take care of a problem newchild, Gabriel, who has trouble sleeping through the night at the Nurturing Center. Jonas helps the child to sleep by transmitting soothing memories to him every night, and he begins to develop a relationship with Gabriel that mirrors the family relationships he has experienced through the memories. When Gabriel is in danger of being released, the Giver reveals to Jonas that release is the same as death. Jonas’s rage and horror at this revelation inspire the Giver to help Jonas devise a

plan to change things in the community forever. The Giver tells Jonas about the girl who had been designated the new Receiver ten years before. She had been the Giver’s own daughter, but the sadness of some of the memories had been too

sensation. The Giver and Jonas plan for Jonas to escape the community and to actually enter Elsewhere. Once he has done that, his larger su pply of memories will disperse, and the Giver will help the community to come to terms with the new feelings and thoughts, changing the society forever.

However, Jonas is forced to leave earlier than planned when his father tells him that Gabriel will be released the next day. Desperate to save Gabriel, Jonas steals his father’s bicycle and a supply of food and sets off for Elsewhere.
