CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the researcher present: Background of the study, Research problem, Objective of the study, significant of the study, scope and limitation and definition of key term.
1.1Background of the Study
English is an international language that became the foreign language studied in Indonesia as a compulsory subject. This subject must be taught at junior high school. The students in Indonesia must learn this foreign language as their subject in the class.
Learning to read is important educational goal. It enables us to gain new knowledge, enjoy literature (Elizabeth, 2003:6). Means, it is very important to master the Reading skill. By mastering Reading skill the student can understand about a lot of information in English text such as English Magazine, News Paper, Brochure and the other information that written in English. That information gives a lot of advantages to the student for their future.
2
Related to information above, reading is useful for language acquisition. Provide that students more or less understand what they read, the more they read, the better they get at it. Reading also has a positive effect on students‟ vocabulary knowledge, on their spelling and on their writing (Harmer, 2007:99). When we read English text, we can get some advantages. Reading can automatically enrich our vocabulary, spelling and also writing.
Reading texts also provide good models for English writing. At different times we can encourage students to focus on vocabulary, grammar or punctuation. We can also use reading material to demonstrate the way we construct sentences, paragraphs and whole texts. Students then have good models for their own writing (Harmer, 2007:99). This is one of the advantages of reading because reading can improve our writing automatically.
Even though Reading Comprehension skill has been taught for a long time to the Junior High School students, still many of the Junior High School graduates are not able to read and comprehend the text. This fact is so concerning that the researcher is interested to conduct a research about students‟ problem in reading
comprehension skill at Junior High School.
Environmental factors seem to play a role when it comes to reading difficulties, that is, according to one of the teachers as well as the literature. Environmental factors include parents/guardians‟ illiteracy, poor learning
environment and poor teaching (Mwanamukubi, 2013:52)
