LC (Language Center) of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held the first

Annual English Competition on Saturday, April 9, 2011. The competition aimed at encouraging freshmen (academic year 2010/2011) to widely expose themselves to English learning as they took ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses offered in their first and second semesters. This Annual English Competition is served as a medium for students to compete and achieve the best in their learning English. The competition fell into 3 categories: News Presenter Contest, MC Hunt, and Writing Contest. Around 80 participants across 10 faculties (English best achievers of each faculty) competed in this Varsity English Competition. Forty participants joined News Presenter Competition, 20 participants joined MC Hunt, and the other 20 participants joined Writing Competition. The One-day English Competition was started at 8 a.m with quick word about the event and official opening by the Director of LC, Ms. Dwi Poedjiastutie, M.A. After the opening ceremony, participants proceeded to different venues of competition.

News Presenter Contest was held in the 1st floor of the Mosque Hall and attended by 40 participants performing in pairs - every faculty represented by 2 pairs. Every pair was given either one of two videos – sport or entertainment – and they had 40 minutes to compose news script and prepare for their performance. The challenge depicted a highly competitive atmosphere. Two professional juries, Ms. Nurenzia Yanuar, M.A. and Ms. Erlyna Abidasari, S.Pd. scored the performances. The first guest jury, Ms. Nurenzia Yanuar, M.A., is currently teaching English at State University of Malang. As for Ms. Abidasari, she is a senior ESP lecturer at UMM.

MC Hunt challenged participants’ best talent in hosting a formal event in English.

20 participants from 10 faculties in UMM competed in the 2nd floor Hall of UMM Mosque. They were to choose either hosting Graduation Day Ceremony or International Seminar. In a technical meeting, held a day prior to the competition, participants were also given agendas of formal event to compose. In the real performance, no longer than 5 minutes for every participant, two juries were thoroughly scoring them to decide the three best performers as the winners. The juries were Scott Harris, an Australian studying Bahasa Indonesia at UMM on Darmasiswa Scholarship, and Hearlie Agritia Chrishantie, S.Pd., an ESP lecturer at UMM. The scoring covered three general criteria: content, language, and delivery.

Writing Contest called for 2 participants from each faculty. Those 20 participants were to submit their writings, either an article about Travelling or An Inspiring Person, a week prior to the Competition Day. The committee, then, selected 6 best writings out of 20 writings. The six best writers were invited to join one-day competition in Experiment Room, Faculty of Psychology, assigned to do writing-on-the-spot. They were to write an article about “Campus Life.” The invited jury, Drs. Hartono, M. Pd. – a Senior Lecturer at
