CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter contains background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of key term. Each section is presented as follows:

1.1Background of the Study

Literature is always interesting to be discussed, because literature is created from the author’s ideas, which are obtained from the life society. Rees (1973) asserts that literature is a permanent expression in words of some thoughts or feelings in ideas about life and the world. According to Wellek (1990: 3), “Literature is an expression of society because it is a mirror of social situation”. It is said that literature shows what happens in society as a reflection and expression of human mind, feeling, happiness, sorrow and culture through language form.

Basically, literary works are not only in the written form but also in spoken language. One kind of literary works which combines written and spoken forms is drama. Usually, the story of drama is based on written form performed by the actor or actress in spoken language with dialogue in front of the stage. Drama develops every period. One of the developments of dramas which has influence to the public interest is film (Scimidt, Bogard and Crockett, 2006)

cinematography recorded on celluloid, video tapes, video discs or other technology findings. It becomes more popular than drama because people could see it anywhere without sitting in front of the stage, such as drama. Film also tells what happens in human life like the real situation either past or future. It usually tells about culture, human’s feeling, love, sacrifice, humanity, struggle, and sorrow.

Based on the explanation above, film is chosen as one kind of literary works that is interesting to analyze. When watching a film, people will not only get entertainment or education but will also find exploration of human personality, problems, and feelings. Besides, film shows people how to be surviving on one conviction of life.

“New York” is a film that tells about friendship, love, and struggle of life in New York City which is often described as the centre of the world. Omar, the main character, got a scholarship to study at one university in USA. He has gone aboard for the first time in his life and soon enough he began to see and love America. He also met his best friends (Sam and Maya) in this city. It is a story of these friends discovering a new world together. But one day the world around them has changed, since the twin tower or known as the World Trade Center (WTC) on September, 11 2001 was exploded by the terrorist, and the US government accused Moslem for the terrorism action. Since that event Moslems in New York got had the discrimination and Omar as a Moslem had to survive from the discrimination.

USA had to face the prejudice and unjust in every steps. In other words, Moslems in the US got the discrimination due to the prejudice triggered from the WTC incident.

This film has a lot of topics to be analyzed and discussed such as love, friendship, struggle of life, unjust, and discrimination. Discrimination is the most interesting topic, because a lot of Moslem gets the discrimination in America. According to report of Council on American-Islamic Relation (CAIR, 2002) not only do people get discrimination due to religion, but they are also discriminated due to race. Thus, this study attempts to discuss and analyze about discrimination and how the discriminated people fight against the discrimination.
