Literature is an art of expressing thought and sense through creative product. By learning literature, it does not only to improve our knowledge and attitude but also give a pleasure. This study discussed one of Mario Puzo’s novels entitled “The Godfather”, the story told about a great leader of mafia gangster who has images of extraordinary leadership to protect his family and all people around him. The writer analyzed Vito Corleone’s leadership style in “The Godfather” novel; there are two statement of problems in this undergraduate thesis, namely 1) What kinds of leadership style are reflected by Vito Corleone 2) What are the effects of leadership style reflected by Vito Corleone toward his organization.

1.1 Background of Study

Novel is one of written literature forms that is commonly used by people. In a novel, the author directs the readers to follow the descriptions of his/her thought, ideas or senses through the stories. According to Isaac (2008:24) generally, the novel is a long, fictitious prose narrative whose imaginary characters and events are presented in a realistic, true-to-life manner. It reflects the situation and condition about human life in its interaction with each other and/or the environment, then illustrated by the author in a written form. It presents in detail the development of characters or a large complex or social issues involving many characters relationship or a complicated event covering many years or a complex relationship among a few characters. Most of the aspects in the real life of human being are presented in the novel that the author conveyed through the novel.

Based on the statements above, a story written in a novel is closely reflection of social life that cannot be separated from community or organization. There is always a leader in a community or organization. Being a leader is not easy because he/she is the one who plans, directs or guides people toward a mutual goal. Leadership has been described as an influence relationship among leaders and employees who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes (Daft, 2005). There are so many different aspects to be a great leader – a role requiring one to play many different leadership styles to be successful. Different styles were needed for different situations and each leader needed to know when to exhibit a particular situation.

Vito Corleone. Vito Corleone as the main character is portrayed as kind, reasonable, warm and loving father and man, though he is Don or the boss of mafia gangster. He is also known by all as the Godfather, a male Godparent who sponsors child baptism, takes responsibility for its faith, images of extraordinary leadership, enormous influence and exaggerates power. His character reflects a thought built around the mafia, explores the traits that command influence and followership among men everywhere –courage, competence, character and community. As a leader, Don Vito Corleone or the Godfather acts to control his own destiny in a society of suspect standards that drives a man of such attributes to a life of crime. It is clear that “The Godfather” is an epic story about family, loyalty, and how "men of honor" live in their own world, and die by their own laws that is the undercurrent that runs through this novel.

Based on the whole descriptions above, the writer is interested in analyzing the kinds and the effects of leadership style reflected by Vito Corleone as the main character toward his organization in “The Godfather” novel by Mario Puzo. As this novel represents an ideal father who is very kind, religious, and a great leader who has images of extraordinary leadership to protect his family and all people around him. In contrast, he is Don or the boss of mafia gangster who lives and works in illegal businesses like liquor and gambling.
