1.1 Background of the Study

Literature is writing in process having excellence of form or expression and

presenting ideas permanent or universal interest (Anderson:Encyclopedia of

Literature, 686). Literature is not science, but literature is inclusive of art

(Sumarjo;Apresiasi Kesustraan,1986). It is because a lot of art elements in the human

element is used. For example; enthusiasm, confidence and passion are applied in

literature. The third elements are difficult to be applied in the scientific

method.Concerning with that explanation it can be stated that literature means a part

of art using beautiful language. That can make our mood entertained.

In every part of the writing on literature, it can make the reader to be drawn

into the story and can give the excitement. Excitement provided in a literary work is

here, it can provide insight to the reader, because the reader will find some conflicts

and how to solve it in the story that they read. Literature can include in the form of

drama, novel, poetry, and short story.

According to Holman, Novel is used in its broadest sense to designate any

extended fictional prose narrative. In the novel there are elements of intrinsic and

extrinsic. Intrinsic elements are some key elements that make a novel become perfect.

For example, Plot, Character elements are the most important parts in the novel.

Whereas extrinsic are some elements that are optional. For example, background of

the authors, biographies and other things outside from the script.

The story of a novel usually tells about human life interacting with the

environment and with each other. On the novel, the writer tries to direct the reader to

the realities of life through contain of the stories from the novel. In order to novel to

be interesting, the writer gives some intrinsic elements, such as; plot, character and

characteristic, and conflict. Conflict is an inherent incompatibility between the

objectives of two or more characters or forces. It is essential to plot. Without conflict

there is no plot. Conflict is divided into 3 elements, they are: Psychological conflict,

physical conflict and social conflict. Psychological conflict or a situation of

indecision where an individual is confronted have to be chosen between equally
