"Victory Tour" of the count
Katniss that he is angry with her for breaking the rules at the end of the last
Hunger Games, which permitted both Peeta and Katniss to win. Snow tells
Katniss that when she defied the Capitol, she inspired rebellion in the districts.
The first stop on the Victory Tour is District 11, the home of Katniss's
deceased friend and ally in the Hunger Games
Katniss delivers a speech thanking the people of District 11 for their
participants in the Games. When she finishes, an old man whistles the tune that
Katniss used in the arena to tell Rue that she was safe. The song acts as a signal
and everyone salutes Katniss, using the same gesture that she used to say
farewell to Rue. To the horror of Katniss, the old man and two others are killed.
Katniss and Peeta travel to the rest of the twelve districts and the Capitol.
Hoping to placate the growing rebellion and settle the dispute between Katniss
and President Snow, Peeta proposes to Katniss during an interview. Despite
this, Katniss learns that their attempt to avert revolt in the districts has failed.
Shortly after returning to District 12, Katniss discovers on the mayor's
done to placate the crowds is not enough as there may be uprisings in other
districts as well. She then meets two runaways from District 8, Bonnie and
Twill. They explain their theory which contradicts what the other districts have
been led to believe: District 13 was not completely wiped out by the Capitol,
and that its residents survive in underground shelters.
Later, it is announced that, for the 75th Hunger Games, 24 victors from
previous years will be forced to compete once again. This is the third
occurrence of the "Quarter Quell": an event that occurs every 25th year of the
Games and allows the Capitol to introduce a twist. Knowing that she and Peeta
will both be competing in the Games a second time, Katniss decides that she
will devote herself to ensuring that Peeta becomes the Quarter Quell's victor
and convinces her mentor to try and help her. Likewise, Peeta is devoted to
protecting her, but both Katniss and her mentor are determined that only Peeta
reaches back home safely.
During the Games, set in a jungle with a saltwater lake, Katniss and Peeta
join up with two other previous victors:

The Quarter Quell III seems will be different from the previous Quarter

The conclusion of the above statement is Katniss Everdeen was 16 years old.
Katniss is having straight black hair, olive skin, and grey eyes. Katniss is a highly
skilled archer, hunter, and trapper. She comes from district 12. Katniss must
struggle of life for her family in a killing games which this games was called
“Hunger Games”. Quarter Quell is a Hunger Games celebration of the venerable
held every twenty-five years. The tribute of Quarter Quell III games is the winners
who have won the Hunger Games which has been held for seventy-four years.
The steps of Quarter Quell III games are the first is the tribute were given a sign
trackers in their bodies. The second is dispatched using a special plane to the
arena game. The third is a game started with a bang gun made by President Snow.
The fourth is run, hide, fight and to set the strategy for survival in the games. And
the last one survival so that she or he will be winner.
3.2 The Strategies of Katniss Struggle of Life
The ninth strategy of Katniss in the Quarter Quell III games are: (a) the feign
of sick, (b) their love relationship, (c) hide the feeling of love for Gale, (d) run
away from District 12, (e) marry with Peeta, (f) lies to public about the wedding
and Katniss Pregnant, (g) to search a group friends in fight arena, (h) struck of
poisonous fog, (i) the attack against scores of vicious monkeys.
The first strategy of Katniss is the feign of sick. She made herself so sick
before in anticipation of it that her mother keep her home and not present in
anticipation. It can be seen from the following quote:
The second strategy of Katniss is their love relationship. the Katniss partner
from Distric 12, Peeta Mellark. Peeta announced to public that he was madly in
love with Katniss. Their romance became a key strategy for their survival in the
arena. It can be seen from the following quote:
“Peeta Mellark, announced he was madly in love with me. Our romance became a key strategy for our survival in the arena. Peeta and I will have to present ourselves as lovers again.” (Collins, 2009:9)
She must convince everyone in the districts that she was crazy with love. A
direct death threat to Gale, and also to everyone who loved. Everyone her love
doomed. She must search how to the way she can proving to the country beyond
any shadow of a doubt that she love Peeta. It can be seen from the following
quote:
“A visit from President Snow. Districts on the verge of uprisings. A direct death threat to Gale, with others to follow. Everyone I love doomed. And how? By proving to the country beyond any and shadow of a doubt that I love Peeta.” (Collins, 2009:30)
Presiden Snow knows that Katniss only pretend to love Peeta. It can be seen
from the following quote:
“After that, there was nothing to do but let you play out your little scenario. And you were pretty good, too, with the love-crazed schoolgirl bit. The people in the Capitol were uite convinced. Unfortunately, not everyone in the districts fell for your act.” (Collins 2009:21)
The third strategy of Katniss is hide the feeling of love for Gale, and Gale
makes a cousin. Gale is a closefriend of Katniss in District 12. They are always
together and spend time to hunting in the woods. His Mom really knows her relate
with Gale. But, most of the people in District 12 just know that Gale is Katniss’s
“Gale going to see you off?” she asks me. “No, he wasn’t on the list,” I say. “ I saw him Sunday, though.” “Think he’d have made the list. Him being your cousin and all,” she says wryly. (Collins 2009:12)
Katniss realizes that President Snow knows that she and Gale are not blood
related or cousin. It can be seen from the following quote:
“…..and then there’s her family to think nof. Her mother, her sister, and all those…cousins.” By the way he lingers on the word “cousins,” I can tell he knows that Gale nd I don’t share a family tree. (Collins 2009:20)
Presiden Snow threat to Katniss that he would kill Gale and his family,
Katniss’ family, and Peeta’s family. Because, Katniss have ignored Peeta and
flaunted my preference for Gale’s company before the whole district. It can be
seen from the following quote:
“President Snow’s eyes bore into me on the heels of his threat to kill Gale. From the president’s point of view, I’ve ignored Peeta and flaunted my preference for Gale’s company before the whole district. Now, I’ve endangered Gale and his family and my family and Peeta, too, by my carelessness.” (Collins 2009:28)
The fourth strategy of Katniss is planning wants to run away by going to the
woods and run from District 12. She tells this plan to Gale. Gale good responds of
her plans. It can be seen from the following quote:
“Let’s skip ahead to this plan of yours,”he says. I take a deep breath. “We run away.” “what?” he asks. “we take to the woods and make a run for it,” I say. “okay, let’s run away,” he says. “really? You don’t think I’m mad? You’ll go with me?” “ I do think you’re mad and I’ll still go with you,” he says. He means it. Not only means it but welcomes it. “we can do it. I know we can. Let’s get out of here and never come back!” (Collins 2009: 95-96)
Actually, Gale approved this plan but when Katniss told that follow with them
too much, Gale was immediately decided that he would stay at District 12. It can
“ I’m sorry. I didn’t realize how large our party was,” he snaps at me.” (Collins 2009: 98)
Katniss still forced Gale to go out from District 12 because she didn’t want to
look at the people who her loved to kill by Capitol. But Gale says to Katniss that
he never go out until whenever. Gale it says because he thought the condition of
other families not only his family. It can be seen from the following quote:
“what about the other families, Katniss? The ones who can’t run away? Don’t you see? It can’t be about just saving us anymore.” (Collins 2009:100)
The fifth strategy of Katniss is marry with Peeta. She realizes that there’s only
one future, if she want to keep those she love alive and stay alive herself. Namely,
she must marry with Peeta. It can be seen from the following quote:
“… there’s only one future, if I want to keep those I love alive and stay alive myself. I’ll have to marry Peeta.” (Collins 2009:44)
The sixth strategy of Katniss is lies to public about the wedding and Katniss’s
Pregnant. The lies began when Peeta interviewed by Caesar. When Caesar asks
Peeta about marriage. Caesar told him do you realize there will be no wedding?
Then Peeta says that he's married. The audience and Caesar shocking with the
statement. Then, Caesar asked him how can that be marriage. And Peeta replied
casually and he says didn’t formal marriage. We didn’t go to the Justice Building
or anything. But there is marriage ritual in District Twelve. According to Peeta the
married than any piece of paper or big party. It can be seen from the following
quote:
other districts. But there’s this thing we do,” says Peeta.” “….and to us, we’re more married than any piece of paper or big party could make us.” (Collins 2009:255)
And the second of their lies is about the Katniss’ Pregnant. At the same time
when Peeta interviewed, he said “if it weren’t for the baby”. At the time, all the
audience was silent all heard these words. The audience direct to digest his words
and their direct the rebel, making the event be
When he walked around the arena, he saw a man namely Finnick who is
studying tips about fishing, and he also introduced an old woman who came from
District 4 is Mags. Mags was making fish hooks from the thorns, chicken bones,
and earrings. Then Katniss imitate what it does. When Katniss managed to make a
decent hook of the nails are bent and tied with strands of hair. Mags smiled with
Katniss success. For a moment, Katniss remember how these women volunteered
to replace the hysterical young woman from their district. She did it because he
thought he had a chance to win. Who performed the same as the old woman who
made Katniss against her sister, Prim. When it Katniss was decided Finnick and
Mags wants into her team.
The eighth strategy of Katniss is when in the fight arena they have to fight the
illness affected the toxic fog. When they were resting there’s suddenly mist
approaching them. The longer the fog was getting close to her and tiny, searing
stabs wherever the droplets of mist touch her skin. Katniss to direct awake those
who are resting. She shouted very strong and told them “run..run..” they are direct
to run and get fuzzy. It can be seen from the following quote:
They also keep running to avoid the poisonous fog. Finnick and Mags ran
while carrying Katniss helps Peeta running. Most of their skin is exposed to the
toxic fog. Droples spring free of the body of vapor. They burn, but not like fire.
Less a sense of heat more of intense pain as the chemicals find our fresh, cling to
it, and burrow down through the layers of skin. They are jumpsuits are no help at
all. When they were running Peeta suddenly dropped and no longer able to run.
Finnick then volunteered for Peeta and Katniss carrying tote Mags. They also
keep running. But the middle of the journey of Katniss was dropped because she
has not been able to carry Mags. They also stopped running and thinking about
how they survived the fog. Mags hauls herself up, plants a kiss on Finnick’s lips,
and then hobbles straight into the fog. Immediately, her body is seized by wild
contortions and she falls to the ground in a horrible dance. They also had to run to
avoid the toxic haze that although their hearts are sad to have lost Mags. Mags has
died in the fog. They fell on the ground and face down. And The fog was gone
just like that. Finnick and Katniss and Peeta told that the fog has stopped.
The last strategy of Katniss is they must work together to fight a horde of
monkeys vicious attack. It began when they were bathing in a small lake to
recover the bodies hit the poisonous fog. That's when the monkey was gathered in
secret. A gang of monkeys hanging from the branches of trees in the forest.
Katniss prepare arrows and Finnick was holding trident. The monkeys explode
into a shrieking mass of orange fur and converge on Peeta. They put themselves
like triangles. They also continue to fight a horde of monkeys. It can be seen from
“I arm my bow with two arrows and Finnick adjusts the trident in his hand. “Peeta,” I say as calmly as possible. “I need your help with something.” Peeta and Finnick and I position ourselves in a triangle, a few yards apart, our backs to one another. My own knife is out now, but the monkeys are quicker. “Peeta!” I shout. “Your arrows!” (Collins 2009:309)
From the ninth
strategy uses by Katniss it is nothing fail. The strategy most influential in the fight
of her life is the second strategy, namely her love relationship with Peeta. Their
romance became a key strategy for their survival in the games. And also, Katniss
must prove to the people of District 12 and President Snow that she and Peeta love
each other without any doubt. If they are fail, their family will be killed by

2. REVIEW AND RELATED OF LITERATURE 2.1 Novel
Novel according to Peck and Coyle in book : Literary Terms and Criticism
(1984:102) said that novel is a move away from an essentially religious view of
life towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience. Most
novels are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in
which they find themselves. In fact, novels tend to tell the same few stories time
and time again. Novelists frequently focus on the tensions between individuals
and the society in which they live, presenting characters who are at odds with that
society. Novels, however, are long works with a great amount of detail on every
page. As readers, our real interest lies in the complications the novelist creates
within the familiar pattern of characters at odds with their society that enable us to
gain a vivid sense of what it is like for particular individuals to be caught in
certain events. A productive critical method for achieving a sense of a novel’s
complexity is to look closely at scenes which you found interesting or memorable,
seeing how to details create a vivid and distinctive impression of an individual and
society conflict. The novel is a work of prose fiction written in the narrative,
usually in story form. The word comes from the Italian, novella which means “a
story or piece of news.” The novel is literary form of the most popular in the
world. This form of literature is the most outstanding, because the vast power of
communication in society. As literature, the novel can be devided into two groups,
namely the work seriously and works of entertainment, but not all are able to
entertainment for us. But he also demanded more than that. The novel is novel
primary requirement is taken it must attract, entertain and bring people out of
complacency after reading.
From the above statement, concluded that novel is a work of prose fiction
written in the narrative. Novelists frequently focus on the tensions between
individuals and the society in which they live, presenting characters who are at
odds with that society. Novel is long works with a great amount of detail on every
page.
2.2 Plots
Plot according to Roberts and Jacobs in book Literature: An Introduction to
Reading and Writing (1995:88) said that plot is all the actions or incidents,
speeches, thoughts, and observations are linked together to make up an entirety,
sometimes called an organic unity. The essence of this unity is the development
and resolution of a conflict in character. The plot is interactions of causes and
effects as they develop sequentially or chronologically. Plot of stories are made up
mostly of actions or incidents that follow each other sequentially. Finding a
sequential or narrative order, however, is only the first step toward the more
important consideration. The plot is the controls governing the development of the
actions. In a well-plotted story, things precede or follow each other not simply
because time ticks away, but more importantly because effects follow causes.
From the above statement, concluded that plot is organized how actions
events. And the plot is interactions of causes and effects as they develop
sequentially or chronologically.
2.3 Characters
Character according to Roberts and Jacobs in book Literature: An
Introduction to Reading and Writing (1995:131) said that character is natural
facsimile of a human being, with all the good and bad traits of being human. The
character is interaction with another character, with a difficult situation, or with an
idea or general circumstances that force action. Through action, speech,
description, and commentary, authors portray characters who are worth caring
about, rooting for, and even loving, although there are also charaters you may
laugh at, dislike, or even hate. Characters from every area of life, and, because we
all share the same capacities for concern, involvement, sympathy, happiness,
sorrow, exhilaration, and disappointment, you should be able to interest yourself
in characters and the ways they deal with their circumstances.
From the above statement, concluded that character is any representation of an
individual being presented in a dramatic or narrative work through extended
dramatic or verbal representation. Through action, speech, description, and
commentary, authors portray characters who are worth caring about, rooting for,
and even loving, although there are also charaters you may laugh at, dislike, or
2.4 Setting
Setting according Roberts and Jacobs in book Literature: An Introduction to
Reading and Writing (1995:158) said that setting is concerned with the places
where story take a place. Setting refers to geographical location of the story, time
period, daily lifestyle of the characters and climate of the story. Background
elements can be divided into three main elements, namely a place, time, and
social. Backgrounds on the location of the place suggest the occurrence of the
events recounted in a work of fiction. The setting is important to give realistic
impression to the readers, created a certain situation at a glanced is really
happened.
From above the statement, concluded that setting is the place or location of the
action. Setting refers to geographical location of the story, time period, daily
lifestyle of the characters. The setting provides the historical and cultural context
for characters.
2.5 Intrinsic Approach
The intrinsic approach starts from the interpretation and analysis of literary
works itself. We are interested in discussing the author, social environment, and
the literature, because of the literature. Romantic flow is the flow that can only
change the system of Neo-Classical critical with pressing arguments relativism.
Other times require other standards as well. Old methods such as classical
modern terms. The trend is actually an attempt to imitate the methods of the
natural sciences.
"Poetica" in the 19th century moved to the tastes of readers. This supports the
idea that art can be enjoyed simply irrational. The concentration of research
literature aimed at literature itself. Sir Sidney Lee concludes theory approach to
the academic literature is “In literary history we seek the external circumstance,
political, social, economics, in which literature is produced”. Wellek and Warren
(1977:158) continues that the old methods such as Classical rhetoric, poetika, and
the dimensions must be learned and translated in modern terms. New methods
based on a survey of modern literary forms have been widely introduced. Such
research will be widely used in France is the method of explication de textes.
While in Germany developed the formal analysis based on the parallels between
works of art and art history, which has been pioneered by Walzel. Later, the
Russian formalist movement and his followers in Czechoslovakia and Poland
greatly stimulate the development of literary studies. In the UK, followers I.A.
Richards began to focus on the text and the poetry critic in America began trying
to restore a group of primary concern in the study of literature. Many studies of
novel who not only see the connection works with the social structure, but
studying the artistic method, point of view, and narrative techniques.
Intrinsic approach takes part from the literary work itself. Intrinsic approach
emphasizes the analysis intertext by describing the elements of the prose that
explained before. Wellek and Warren (1977: 139) in book “Theory ofLiterature”
range of forms in modern literature. They also stated that the main part of intrinsic
approach is based on the text of literary works itself by doing an interpretation and
analysis of it (1977: 139).
2.6 Descriptive Research
According to John W. Best (1982:42) in book “Methodology of Educational
Research” said that there are three types of analysis that can be used to classify
educational research is historical research, description research, and experimental
research.
Historical research is research that applies the scientific method of solving a
problem from a historical perspective. Collection and interpretation process that
occurred in the past, the present, the future also.
Descriptive research is a type of research that is happening in the present. In it
there is an attempt description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the
current situation. It is purpose to describe and explored the circumstances that
occurred at this time.
Experimental research is the only research that can test hypotheses to establish
causal relationships. This is the strongest chain of reasoning about relationships
between variables.
In writing this paper, the writer uses type of description research. Descriptive
attempt description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the current situation.
1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of The Study
Recently, the writer was saw the news in Medan about Aisyah, a young
girl was 8 years old. Everyday she must take care and keep her father who was
ill because of acute tuberculosis. She must bring her father by bicycle
rickshaw and must fulfill necessary of her life and hope pity from the
community. The struggle of a young girl really be apprehensive. The struggle
of a young girl not only happen in the real life, but also happen in novel. In
this novel Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games : Catching Fire tell about a
young woman that must struggle of her life in a killing games.
The writer is interested in analyzing a novel which entitled The Hunger
Games : Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. This novel tell about a young
woman that must struggle of life for her family in a killing games which this
games was called “Hunger Games”. Hunger Games is an annual event in
which one boy and one girl aged 12-18 from each of twelve districts
surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a battle to the
death to get money and food. The purpose of the Hunger Games is to
relationship between districts and also to remember about them who were
killed because of the rebellion in each district. The games in this novel is a
continuation of the previous games that held last year namely the winners of
the Hunger Games must compete again in the 75th games or Quater Quell III
games. Many of their strategies for struggle of life in the Quarter Quell III
each other, if they can not prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that their love
for each other, the sequences will be horrifying. Especially, their family and
all those who loved.
Literature according to Roberts and Jacobs in book Literature: An
Introduction to Reading and Writing (1995:2) refers to compositions that tell
stories, dramatize situations, express emotions, and analyze and advocate
ideas. Literature may be classified into four categories or genres: (1) prose
fiction, (2) poetry, (3) drama, and (4) nonfiction prose. From the various types
of imaginative literature, my choise falls on prose fiction, exactly on novel,
which is a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity,
portraying characters and presenting an organized sequence of events and
scenes.
The writer use the work of descriptive research is and also uses intrinsic
approach by Wellek and Warren (1977:139) that it manage to take the data
from text itself.
