BACKGROUND AND AIM:Fibroin is a natural macromolecule derived from the cocoons of Bombyx mori, which attract scientists from different disciplines to conduct various studies. Fibroin has a long history of use in medicine, such as suturing materials, bone grafts, and artificial ligaments.
METHODS:The aim of this study is to review the potentials of fibroin in dental treatment
RESULTS:Several studies have been using silk fibroin as surface coatings on tissue so the adhesion of
anchorage-dependent cells increase with collagen substrate. Fibroin has also been able to increase the growth of bone tissue in vitro. Fibroin is a biodegradable polymeric biomaterial containing poly (L-lactic acid)-PLA and biodegradable properties of
collagen which are direct effects on the mesenchymal cells for the osteogenesis of bone tissue that is potential as a bone graft material such as the case of bone defects due to periodontitis. The authors hope that this material could be used to trigger ectomesenchyme cells in the dental pulp that can be used as a material on exposed pulp caused by trauma, mechanical exposure, or iatrogenic in reversible pulpitis
CONCLUSIONS:Fibroin is a natural macromolecule wich is potential as a dental biomaterial to induce the growth of bone and dentin tissue.
Keywords: Fibroin, Cocoon silk worm, Poly L-lactic Acid
