Abstract
Technology provides numerous assistances for education, particularly for language learning. By the presence of technology, learners get exposures to the internet which enables them to connect and communicate with people around the world. In other words, students are given chances to be exposed to a more interesting and interactive learning instruction. The implementation of e-learning, thus, becomes one alternative to the teaching techniques which empowers students as active language users. This study highlights the use of blogs and edmodo as e-learning platforms. It aims at investigating the learners’ perceptions on the
opportunities and the drawbacks of those e-learning platforms implementation. During the course, the learners are required to participate in e-learning discussion for additional and supporting activity inside and outside the classroom. The activities include commenting on a thread, analysing a specific topic or case, submitting the assignment, responding to other
students’ comment or work, taking polling and doing quizzes. The findings from the interview with six participants revealed some issues related to the use of e-learning toward their language skills in which by having e-learning, learners pay more attention to structure and the use of language which becomes more formal. It also enhances their writing skill, reading skill, vocabulary, and grammar. Some other strengths of e-learning perceived by the participants include providing flexibility, providing updated material and information, encouraging reading, and enriching learning resources. However, the participants also pointed out some drawbacks of the e-learning implementation. Some of the drawbacks perceived are decreasing social relationship, decreasing oral communication, and lessening
teachers’ direct feedback.
