Genset merupakan suatu alat yang dapat mengubah energi mekanik menjadi energi listrik. Genset dapat digunakan sebagai sumber cadangan listrik apabila sumber listrik dari PLN mati. Genset juga biasa di pakai sebagai sumber penerangan dan menghidupkan sound system pada acara pesta maupun acara pernikahan. Pemakaian genset dalam jangka waktu yang cukup lama akan berakibat mesin tersebut cepat panas. Oleh karena itu diperlukan pendinginan ketika genset tersebut bekerja.
Pendinginan pada mesin genset yang sering digunakan masyarakat umum atau genset yang sering dipakai pada acara pesta biasanya menggunakan pendinginan tipe hopper (tong).
Pendinginan tipe hopper dilakukan dengan cara merambatkan panas blok silinder pada genset ke air pendingin yang terdapat pada tong. Mesin genset dengan sistem pendingin tipe hopper tersebut tidaklah praktis untuk dipindah-pindah dan tidak efektif karena harus dilakukan penggantian dan pengisian air pendingin secara periodik selama mesin genset beroperasi. Oleh karena itu akan dilakukan desain instalasi radiator sebagai sistem pendingin pada mesin genset. Radiator akan ditambahkan pada mesin genset sebagai sistem pendingin. Penggunaan radiator pada mesin genset diharapkan dapat mengurangi frekuensi penambahan jumlah air pendingin ke dalam tangki sehingga penggunaan genset sebagai cadangan listrik lebih efisien dan efektif. Mesin genset yang dipakai juga lebih praktis dan mudah untuk dipindah-pindah.
