Greetings,

As we begin the middle portion of our Lenten observances, perhaps we could use a little pep talk. As your pastor and spiritual father, I will now offer you a little spiritual “shot in the arm”. Read at your own risk!

We could surmise Lent in the following way: Be cleansed, do good and avoid evil. Easier said than done! Whenever we feel discouraged or alone in our struggles, (not only during Lent but throughout our lives) consider these words of St. Paul: “With Christ I hang upon the cross, and yet I am alive; or rather; not I; is Christ that lives in me.”

St. Paul certainly knows what it means to have friendship with Jesus. A true friend will walk with us every step we take during life. Moreover, a true friend will help us bear our burdens. This was the sole purpose of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection: to share in our human nature.

So if you’re struggling and feeling like a failure, find your strength through Jesus! Reach out your hand and he will take and lift you up and lead you along your Lenten path that leads to Easter joy!

Life Began in the Garden

The book of Genesis tells us of the wonders of God’s creation and speaks of the Garden of Eden as the home from which Adam and Eve would find sustenance. On Tuesday March 13th, Deacon Ed will begin Year 2 of our “Life Began in the Garden”

project at the Emerson Road Learning Farm, with a presentation from Farmer “Joe”. Joe will present or- ganic gardening techniques and nutritional infor- mation in a short program to our community and pro-

vide registration forms for this year’s garden project. Last year, Deacon Ed led a group of our parishioners in successfully growing vegetables for personal use. All are welcome to this presentation as we embark on another growing season.

From the Desk of Deacon Ed

The season of Lent many special things going on that are rooted in the his- tory and the traditions of our Catholic Church. Many of the traditions go all the way back to the Apostles themselves. Think about the ashes we re- ceived on Ash Wednesday, the Stations of the Cross we observe on Fridays of the season, the fasting and abstinence practices, and the liturgical changes to denote the season.

One of the traditions include the “Scrutinies” of the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent that are part of the initiation for the adults making their

final preparations to enter the church at the Easter Vigil. This weekend at the 10:00 mass, we observe the First Scrutiny in which eight adults, two children and an infant will take part of this final step in the St. Adalbert RCIA process.

In the early church, the ‘Scrutinies’ were coupled with an exorcism in which the bishop would lay hands on the person to prepare them for baptism. By the 17th century, the exorcism was moved to be used only in infant baptisms and is still used today. The ‘scrutiny’ consistently served as an assessment of one’s readi- ness for baptism, by examining the spiritual development, moral behavior, intellectual understanding and the intelligence of the godparent.

Today, the purpose is to “uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect.”

Secondly, to “bring out and strengthen all that is upright.” And at its core, the scrutinies are not about sinfulness of the elect, but about the overwhelming grace of God in Christ.
