ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to find out the levels of anxiety perceived by junior high

school students and identify the major stressor reported by the students learning to speak

English. A descriptive method was employed as the research design of this study and adapted

questionnaire of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz, Horwitz and

Cope (1986). It was administered to 40 students of an English class in a Junior High School

Lembang. Besides an open ended questionnaire, classroom observation and interview were used

to find the data about the major stressor that causes student’s anxiety. The results showed that

most of the students were “mildly anxious” level (42%) in speaking English. There were eight

“anxious” level students (21%), eleventh “relaxed” level students (29%) and only three “very

relaxed” level students (8%). The major stressors in students’ speaking were speaking in English in classroom activities and performing in English in front of their classmates and teacher.

Teacher should be aware of this kind anxiety and help the students by creating a low anxiety in

classroom activities.

ABSTRAK

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui level-level kecemasan dari

murid-murid di sekolah menengah pertama atau SMP dan untuk mengidentifikasi keutamaan rasa stres

yang muncul pada murid-murid dalam pembelajaran berbicara bahasa Inggris. Didalam

penelitian ini metode deskripsi digunakan sebagai desain penelitian dan mengadopsi pertanyaan

dari skala kecemasan pada bahasa asing didalam ruangan kelas oleh Horwitz, Horwitz dan Cope

(1986). Pertanyaan itu dibagikan kepada 40 murid sekolah menengah pertama Lembang dalam

kelas bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, ada beberapa pertanyaan yang tidak terbatas, observasi kelas dan

wawancara yang digunakan untuk mendapatkan data tentang keutamaan rasa stress yang

menyebabkan kecemasan pada murid. Hasil menunjukkan bahwasanya murid yang paling

banyak berada pada level yang sedikit cemas (42%) dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris. Kemudian

ada 8 murid yang berada di level yang cemas (21%), 11 murid berada di level yang santai (29%)

dan hanya 3 murid yang berada di level yang sangat santai (8%). Keutamaan rasa stres pada saat

murid berbicara adalah pada saat berbicara bahasa Inggris dalam kegiatan-kegiatan kelas bahasa

Inggris dan tampil dalam bahasa Inggris didepan teman-teman kelas dan guru. Guru harus lebih

memperhatikan dalam keadaan berbagai macam kecemasan dan membantu murid untuk

mengurangi rasa cemas pada saat kegiatan didalam ruangan kelas.
