By Grace Chang
I read this a few years ago and I'm coming back to review it now. I read this at the tail-end of my adolescence, possibly one of my last young adult reads as my tastes start to change. As a child who has lived between to cultures, and now have children of my own who are biracial (pardon to the politically correct as I really don't know what word I could use to describe a phenotypical phenomenon as opposed to genetic difference - you get me.), the story and characters in this book struck me particularly.
Being naturally timid, and often morbid, the plot of the departed Korean mother strikes me as I look upon my own children and try to imagine them grown. They will likely be attractive youngsters who will go through awkward stages and must learn to manage their romantic lives. I hope I can be there for them, but as an ex-teenager I know I can never be able to be as involved in their personal lives as I would like to be. This story is about the growing up of teenagers, having dreams and secrets of their own.
In a way the different temperaments of the three sisters puts me in mind of the Bennet sisters in Jane Austen. My husband pooh-poohs the Austen books for it was set among those with status and not indicative of the general experience of people at the time. But there is nothing wrong with that. The characters in this book are similarly situated - in a stable society, with freedom and resources (the father is a doctor). And though in the big picture her problems are petty compared to those who have much more basic Maslow scale concerns, it is genuinely depicted, and as a reader, genuinely felt. As a serious-minded girl myself, identifying with her elder sister, I felt it worthy to see the perspective from a girl who was fluffier and more sensitive than I.
At the end of the day, we are all born with our diverse inclinations and drives that are not so easily changed, though we do often feel longing to be as 'good' as others.
Other things I enjoyed: the girls mothering each other and growing independent, and I love how the father is depicted here as the good man that I know men are capable of being.
Great playlist btw. Such a comfort to listen to.

me.) the writing style seems childish and more middle grade than young adult, but the topics focused on in the book is more YA.

By Lisa Bertrand
I liked To All the Boys I've Ever Loved Before. It had a memorable main character and a writing style that felt like it was genuinely written by a teenager. The dynamic between Lara Jean, her family, and Josh was something that I, the reader, could really get behind. This book is a YA rom-com that dreamy teens with no romantic experience can definitely relate too. However the character/ love-interest Peter, was something I just ...didn't like about the book. The story was doing a good job convincing me that people aren't always what they seemed (most of Lara Jean's friends thought that Peter was a jerk). I was finally starting to like Peter when the ending rolled around. Spoiler: Lara Jean' s reputation gets destroyed by a rumor and Peter did little to nothing to stop it. In total, even to the end Peter cared more about his reputation than Lara Jean' s. I feel like he's just a bad example of what a real good boyfriend should be. However I'm just a little biased because I had my suspicions about Peter confirmed. The book in total is very good except for the one chapter involving the rumor. I would still recommend the book to anyone who is apprehensive about "teen love".
