direct effect on the length of time they can hold their breath and consequently their ability to stay underwater for a long time. This is very important because they drown their victims by holding them underwater.

When crocodiles hold their breath, their bodies produce a chemical signal which makes their heamoglobin give up more of its oxygen than usual. Crocodiles can then use that oxygen without any need to breathe in more air.

Research workers nowadays are trying to reproduce this heamoglobin molecule in human blood. Their work may eventually make it possible for someone to swim underwater for much longer. The problem is that this unusual form of haemoglobin may not be the only explanation why crocodiles can stay underwater for so long. Despite this, however, the research is of great value for the future and may even help scientists to produce artificial blood. This is just another example of the way in which we can improve our lives by studying animals.

Obviously, as in any field of publishing, some self-help books are better than others. Some may be based on actual research and case studies – there’s some substance to them that suggests they can, at least to some extent, be taken seriously. Others, however, amount to little more than psychobabble – empty nonsense dressed up as serious psychological understanding. These books bombard the reader with a mass of meaningless jargon, disguising the fact that they have nothing to say and it would be a waste to buy them. It’s the latter category that has given self-help books a bad name among critics of the genre.

The kind of advice given in self-help books is often more or less the same. What really amount to pretty standard statements are made in many of them. But, does this advice stand up to scrutiny? Psychologists who have studied a range of self-help books connected with happiness say the answer to this is “not always”. They say that although the emphasis the books place on aiming for good relationships with families, friends and colleagues has, in some ways, some scientific basis in terms of what does actually lead to personal happiness, in other ways the advice given is actually false.
