ix ABSTRACT
Annam, Choirul. 2012. The Reading Comprehension of Recount Text of the Eighth Grade Students of MTs Nurul Ulum Welahan Jepara in the Academic Year 2011/2012 Taught by Using The Power of Two as a Strategy. Skripsi. English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muria Kudus University. Advisor: (i) Rismiyanto, S.S, M.Pd (ii) Fajar Kartika, S.S, M.Hum.
Key words: Reading Comprehension, Recount Text, The Power of Two Strategy
Reading comprehension is a process of getting meaning from written text which readers understand the content of the text. Students can know information of the text by reading comprehensively. However, many students get difficulties in reading material, for example recount text. Because of that, teacher should use strategy of teaching that can
develop the reading comprehension of the students. The power of two is one of the
teaching strategies that can be used in teaching reading to develop the students’ reading
skill. Therefore, the researcher applies the power of two strategy for the eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Ulum Welahan Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 to develop their reading comprehension of recount text because they confused in understanding it.
The objective of the research is to find out whether there is a significant difference between the reading comprehension of recount text of the eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Ulum Welahan Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 taught with and without using the power of two as a strategy.
The design of this research is experimental research. It is done at the eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Ulum Welahan Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012. The researcher took VIII B as the experimental group (25 students) and VIII A as the control group (25 students) as the sample by using cluster random sampling. The experimental group taught with the power of two strategy and the control group taught without the power of two strategy. After they were taught during four meetings they did post test to compare the result.
The result of the research showed that there is significantly progress for the
students in the reading comprehension of recount text taught with the power of two
strategy. It can be proved the differences of the mean score of post test in the
experimental group and control group. The experimental group that is taught with the
power of two strategy has the mean score 86.92 and the standard deviation7.43. From the data showed that the reading comprehension of recount text taught with the power of two as a strategy is categorized as excellent. However, the mean score of control group who taught without the power of two as a strategy is 76.36 and the standard deviation is 10.64. From this data, the reading comprehension of recount text taught without the power of two is categorized as good. So, the calculation of observation of score is higher than t-table (to = 4.08 > tt = 2.00). It means that there is a significant difference between the reading comprehension of recount text of the eighth grade students of MTs Nurul Ulum Welahan Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 taught with and without using the power of two as a strategy.
Based on the result above, it means that the power of two strategy works well to
develop student’s reading comprehension. Therefore, the English teacher can apply the
