Realizing how important the English language is, our government includes English in curriculum as a compulsory subject for student in our country. It is taught from elementary school as an optional subject, junior high school and university level as a compulsory subject, it aims to make students understand the types of texts or genres. In the syllabus of the eighth grade students of junior high school, there is descriptive text as the material. In the fact, the writer found many eighth grade students of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus have less understanding and capability in writing descriptive text. They are not interested to follow the class because the English teacher do not use interesting media and do the monotonous way to teach. Therefore, the writer uses picture of tourism brochures as the media to help the students’ ability in writing descriptive text, so the students did not face difficulties in writing descriptive text.
The objective of the research is to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between the writing ability of descriptive text of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using Picture of Tourism Brochures.
The design of this research is pre-experimental research. The population of this research is all of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014. The writer takes one class as the sample by using cluster random sampling. The writer got VIII D, consist of 30 students. The research instrument used by the writer is written test.
The writing ability of descriptive text of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 before being taught by using picture of tourism brochures is sufficient. The result of the test shows that the mean is 57.63 and standard deviation is 11.67. Meanwhile, the writing ability of descriptive text of the eighth grade students of SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2013/2014 after being taught by using picture of tourism brochures is good. It showed from the result of the test that mean is 74.46 and standard deviation is 8.25. It is easy to understand from the mean of pre-test and post-test that there is significant different. The mean of post-test is higher than the mean score of pre-test. But, we have to examine the result of the scores by using t-test and t-table. Then, the result is t-test (to = 6.52 > t-table = 2.05). Menyadari betapa pentingnya bahasa Inggris, pemerintah kita memasukkan bahasa Inggris dalam kurikulum sebagai mata pelajaran wajib bagi siswa di negara kita. Bahasa Inggris diajarkan dari sekolah dasar sebagai mata pelajaran tidak wajib, Sekolah Menegah Pertama dan tingkat universitas sebagai mata kuliah wajib. Hal itu bertujuan agar siswa memahami jenis teks atau genre. Didalam silabus kelas VIII Sekolah Menengah Pertama, ada materi teks deskripsi. Pada kenyataannya, penulis menemukan banyak siswa kelas VIII Sekolah Menengah Pertama memiliki pemahaman dan kemampuan yang kurang dalam menulis teks deskriptif. mereka tidak tertarik untuk mengikuti kelas karena guru bahasa Inggris tidak menggunakan media yang menarik dan melakukan cara monoton untuk mengajar. Oleh karena itu, penulis menggunakan gambar brosur wisata sebagai media untuk membantu kemampuan menulis teks deskripsi siswa, sehingga para siswa tidak menhghadapi kesulitan dalam menulis teks deskripsi.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada atau tidak perbedaan signifikan antara kemampuan menulis teks dekripsi siswa kelas VIII SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus pada tahun akademik 2013/2014 sebelum dan sesudah diajarkan menggunakan Gambar Brosur Wisata.
Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian pre-eksperimental. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VIII SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus pada tahun akademik 2013/2014. Penulis mengambil satu kelas sebagai sampel dengan menggunakan cluster random sampling. Penulis mendapat kelas VIII D, terdiri dari 30 siswa. Instrument penelitian yang digunakan penulis adalah tes tertulis.
Kemampuan menulis teks deskripsi siswa kelas VIII SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus pada tahun akademik 2013/2014 sebelum diajarkan menggunakan gambar brosur wisata adalah cukup. Hasil tes menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-ratanya adalah 57.63 dan standar deviasi 11.67. Sementara itu, kemampuan menulis teks deskripsi siswa kelas VIII SMP 1 Mejobo Kudus pada tahun akademik 2013/2014 sesudah diajarkan menggunakan gambar brosur wisata adalah baik. Ditunjukkan dari rata-rata hasil tes adalah 74.46 dan standar deviasi 8.25. Mudah untuk memahami bahwa ada perbedaan signifikan dari nilai rata-rata pre-test dan post-test. Nilai rata-rata post-test lebih tinggi daripada nilai rata-rata pre-post-test. Tapi, kita harus menguji hasil tersebut menggunakan t-test dan t-table. Kemudian, hasilnya adalah t-test (to = 6.52 > t-table = 2.05). Jadi, ada perbedaan signifikan antara
