Teachers'Assessment Strategies for Children

with

Disabilities: A Constructivist Study in Regular Primary Schools in Negros Oriental, Philippines

Rolando Jr. Villamero

Philippine Youth Education Ambassador to the UN Secretary General's Global Education First Initiative Youth Advocacy Group (GEFI-YAG)

ABSTRACT

This qualitative

study

aims

at

exploring

how the three

regular primary school teachers,

identified

as practitioners

of

inclusive education

for at

least three years,

in

Negros Oriental, Philippines assess children with disabilities

in the

regular classrooms. Specifically,

it

examined

the different

assessment strategies

and

how teachers employed them

to

respond

to

the needs of children

with

disabilities. The mentioned aims were asserted

to

be addressed by utilizing a constructivist methodology, which allowed this qualitative study

to

understand the experiences of the teachers being studied, and it assumed that the meaning of experiences was constructed by the teachers themselves. These experiences

were explored

by

utilizing

two

constructivist

tools,

namely, semi-structured interviews and direct classroom observations.

This

study

revealed

critical

findings

in

relation

to

teachers' assessment

for

children

with

disabilities, according

to

the

teacher-participants themselves. First,

the

assessment strategies

that

teachers employed are based on the diagnostic, formative, and summative purposes of assessment. Under these three purposes, teachers

specifically

employ

assessment strategies such as tests, observations, portfolios,

and

groupings. This finding indicates

that in

assessing children

with

disabilities, teachers should employ a variety

of

assessment strategies. Second,

in

delivering

the

mentioned assessment strategies

to

children

with

disabilities,

the

teachers modify the content and delivery based on the needs of the children. The content modification considers the use of the child's

native language, and

the

length and level

of difficulty of the

assessment. On

the other

hand, proximity, peer support, use of technology, and time element are the foci of delivery modification. The second finding of the study suggests that in delivering the assessment strategies, there is a variety of means to consider and employ which are responsive to the needs of children with disabilities.

ABSTRACT

ln

the

Philippines, TB ranks as the

6th

leading cause

of

mortality and morbidity and has made

the

country place

9th

among

22

countries

worldwide

with

a

high burden

of

TB. This

health burden is also

present in Dumaguete City making it the second city in Negros Oriental with the highest prevalence of TB next to Tanjay City

in

2011. Using a cross-sectional design,

the

profile

of

TB DOTS (Tuberculosis Direct Observed Treatment Short Course) enrollees in Dumaguete City in the year 2012-2013 was determined in this study. Fifteen barangays were randomly selected with enrollees of 123

in20t2

and 120 in 2013. The enrollees were mostly male{71.54%inZALZ

and 65.83% in 2013),

with

40.5%

in

20L2 and 46.67% in 2013 aging from 41-65 years old, and were unemployed

before and during

their

course

of treatment

|160.16%

in

2O72 and 68.33%

in

2013). Those who were employed

were public utility vehicle drivers (39.84%in 20L2 and 6.670/" in 2013) with an estimated family monthly income

of

7676.80 Pesos. A cure rate of 94.3L%

in 20t2

and 95% in 2013 was also identified

with

death rates

of

2.44% and 2.5A%in 2012 and 2013 respectively. A comparison bet\Areen the cure rate of the tota! population

in

Dumaguete Clty

in the

year 2012 and 2A13 i93.61% and 9A.97% respectively) and

the

cure rate computed

from

this study (97.56%in 2012 and 95.8376 in 2013) revealed that the barangays that were involved in this study had an effective

implementation of the TB DOTS program in terms of case finding and treatment outcomes. Furthermore, this can also be a good indicator for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals which includes the eradication of communicabie diseases in the Philippines in 2015.

The Community Life of the Hinterland Residents inthe Fourth Ctass Municipalities in Negros Oriental

Regidor Tubosa Carale

Subject Team Leader, Research and MAPEH Basic Education Department St. Paul University Dumaguete

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to gather information regarding the perceptions of hinterland residents of the

fourth

class municipalities

in

Negros Oriental towards the government services, programs and activities extended especially in the field of education.

Specifically, it sought to answer the, following questions: 1) What is the profile of the respondents in terms

of

educational attainment

of

parents, monthly income, monthly expenses, list of dependents, occupation/livelihood

and educational status

of

children? 2) How do

the

respondents perceived higher education

in

relation

to

their

values, attitudes and beliefs? 3) ls there a significant relationship between these variables and their perceptions on

higher

education: values

and

educational

attainment

of

parents,

their

attitudes towards

their

day

to

day ch.allenges and educational attainment

of

children

to their

challenges? 4) What are

the

common reasons of the

residents of not pursuing higher education? 5) What are the common difficulties and problems experienced by the

residents

in

relation

to

the government services extended

for

them? 6) What are

their

common suggestions

to

uplift their

ways

of

living and qualities

of life?

7) How can the findings

of the

study be used

to

improve, create programs and activities that can influence and favor their status of life?

Findings revealed

that

residents

do not

acquire higher degree

of

learning which influenced

their

values,

attitudes, beliefs and ways

of living.

And

the

reasons

of not

pursuing higher education are

the

distance of the

school, undeveloped roads, unhealthy politics and inequality of government services and poverty. The reliability

of

the findings was determined by Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient considering the mean from the different variables which are generated from the Likert scales.

lmplications for practice include: improvement of government support programs related to education; promoting and strengthening livelihood skills; equality in government services regardless of political

color.

lt is further recommended that school should initiate and strengthen community extension programs that will cater

the needs of the people; promote researches that will strengthened linkages to local government agencies and private sectors on specific knowledge and skills needed by the residents.

Survey on the Online Communication Literacy among College Students: lnputs towards the development of an Online Counseling System

John Audi P. Bato MIS Student, Silliman University

ABSTRACT

ln the

quest

for

improving

the

utilization

of

guidance counseling services

through

lCT,

it

is important

to

understand what factors affect a student's intention

to

engage in counseling services. According to Ajzen's (1980) Theory

of

Planned Behavior, the ease or difficulty

of

performing a task is one of the factors

that

affect a person's

intentions

to

engage

on a

certain task

or

behaviour. The application

of

the theory in this

study has

led

the

researcher

to

(1) measure the online communication literacy of college students, (2) identifu the

tool

preference

on

online communication and (3) identify

the platform

preference.

All

respondents

are

bona

fide

students

of

Foundation University during the 1st semester of the academic year 2OL4-20t5. Based on Slovin's formula, a

total

sample size

of

348 {13%) students

out

of

2,654 was evaluated. To determine

who would

comprise

the

348,

stratified random sampling was used. An adapted survey questionnaire was used during the gathering of data. The

questionnaire was originally developed

by

Chloe Brown (2012)

of

Humboldt State University

in

California.

lt

consists of standardized measures and items that will gather information regarding student attitudes and potential utilization

of

ABSTRACT

Stroke, in this case paralytic stroke, is sudden paralysis caused by a brain injury. As a result of paralysis,

post-stroke patients

will

have physical, psychological and social limitations

that

can affect

their

quality

of

life. As a

consequence, patients need help from others, especially from their family

to

go through their daily activities. The aim of study was to describe patterns of daily life in patients with post-stroke in Tomohon City. lt was a case study' Data were collected through in-depth interviews

with

observations

from five

participants

who

had experienced stroke and their family rnembers as a care giver. There were two stages used in determining the sample. First, an

interview with the physiotherapist, who did home care

for

patients

with

post-stroke at Health Center in fomohon

was

conducted. There

were 11

post-stroke patients

who were qualified and met

the

characteristics

of

the

participants: those who were not currenfly undergoing intensive care in hospital did not have poor prognosis, has been taken care of family members

for

more than six months, not cognitively and linguistically impaired. Second,

interview and direct

observations

were

conducted

on 11

patients

with

post-stroke,

and

5

participants were chosen. The data obtained were analyzed through open coding then categories were created. Abstractions were explained by using descriptive approach. lnterview transcriptions were analyzed

until no

new information were observed. From this research,

it

was found that there were changes in

the life

pattern

of

post-stroke patients in

terms

of

their

daily activities,

diet

and communication. The daily activities changed significantly;

there

were

limitations due

to

physical weakness. As a result, the daily life of the

five

participants was limited only

to

home activities. The type and food consumption were also affected. Both participants and caregivers perceived that the

emotional sensitivity they had developed and the changes in term of family roles could lead

to

misunderstandings which would consequently result in quarreling.

Marcusean Critique on TESDA's Competency-based Education: Toward a Holistic Tech-Voc Education in the Philippines

Arvin C. Revagorda

Philosophy Department, Silliman University

ABSTRACT

As

the

current

leading

authority

in

Philippine tech-voc education, Technical Education

and

Skills Development Authority (TESDA) continues to

fulfill

its role in ensuring that the State's economy remains stable and progressive through producing Filipino middle-skilled workforce that are globally competitive and efficient to work

in the industry, local or international. To ensure the "marketability" of the students, TESDA adapted a

competency-based curriculum

patterned

on

the

industry's standards

and

developed

by

their

experts.

This

educational approach, however, in a Marcusean critique, is a perfect prototype of a "one-dimensional education" centered on creating "one-dimensional individuals"

that

are technically competent

to

work in the industry but not necessarily

efficient cognitively and socially

to

live within

the

society. This is premised on a generally accepted belief

that

a "one-dimensional

mind"

necessarily results

in a

one-dimensional, dysfunctional society.

This paper

argues,

therefore,

that

there

is

an urgent

need

to

reconfigure TESDA

s

competency-based curriculum

from

a

one-dimensional

training into

multi-dimensional learning

through the

incorporation

of

Liberal

Arts

subjects

in

its offered courses.
