Teachers'Assessment Strategies for Children
with
Disabilities: A Constructivist Study in Regular Primary Schools in Negros Oriental, PhilippinesRolando Jr. Villamero
Philippine Youth Education Ambassador to the UN Secretary General's Global Education First Initiative Youth Advocacy Group (GEFI-YAG)
ABSTRACT
This qualitative
study
aimsat
exploringhow the three
regular primary school teachers,identified
as practitionersof
inclusive educationfor at
least three years,in
Negros Oriental, Philippines assess children with disabilitiesin the
regular classrooms. Specifically,it
examinedthe different
assessment strategiesand
how teachers employed themto
respondto
the needs of childrenwith
disabilities. The mentioned aims were assertedto
be addressed by utilizing a constructivist methodology, which allowed this qualitative studyto
understand the experiences of the teachers being studied, and it assumed that the meaning of experiences was constructed by the teachers themselves. These experienceswere explored
by
utilizing
two
constructivisttools,
namely, semi-structured interviews and direct classroom observations. This
study
revealedcritical
findingsin
relation
to
teachers' assessmentfor
childrenwith
disabilities, accordingto
the
teacher-participants themselves. First,the
assessment strategiesthat
teachers employed are based on the diagnostic, formative, and summative purposes of assessment. Under these three purposes, teachersspecifically
employ
assessment strategies such as tests, observations, portfolios, and
groupings. This finding indicatesthat in
assessing childrenwith
disabilities, teachers should employ a varietyof
assessment strategies. Second,in
deliveringthe
mentioned assessment strategiesto
childrenwith
disabilities,the
teachers modify the content and delivery based on the needs of the children. The content modification considers the use of the child'snative language, and
the
length and levelof difficulty of the
assessment. Onthe other
hand, proximity, peer support, use of technology, and time element are the foci of delivery modification. The second finding of the study suggests that in delivering the assessment strategies, there is a variety of means to consider and employ which are responsive to the needs of children with disabilities.Profile of clients

ABSTRACT
ln
the
Philippines, TB ranks as the6th
leading causeof
mortality and morbidity and has madethe
country place9th
among22
countriesworldwide
with
a
high burden
of
TB. Thishealth burden is also
present in Dumaguete City making it the second city in Negros Oriental with the highest prevalence of TB next to Tanjay Cityin
2011. Using a cross-sectional design,the
profileof
TB DOTS (Tuberculosis Direct Observed Treatment Short Course) enrollees in Dumaguete City in the year 2012-2013 was determined in this study. Fifteen barangays were randomly selected with enrollees of 123in20t2
and 120 in 2013. The enrollees were mostly male{71.54%inZALZand 65.83% in 2013),
with
40.5%in
20L2 and 46.67% in 2013 aging from 41-65 years old, and were unemployedbefore and during
their
courseof treatment
|160.16%in
2O72 and 68.33%in
2013). Those who were employedwere public utility vehicle drivers (39.84%in 20L2 and 6.670/" in 2013) with an estimated family monthly income
of
7676.80 Pesos. A cure rate of 94.3L%
in 20t2
and 95% in 2013 was also identifiedwith
death ratesof
2.44% and 2.5A%in 2012 and 2013 respectively. A comparison bet\Areen the cure rate of the tota! populationin
Dumaguete Cltyin the
year 2012 and 2A13 i93.61% and 9A.97% respectively) andthe
cure rate computedfrom
this study (97.56%in 2012 and 95.8376 in 2013) revealed that the barangays that were involved in this study had an effectiveimplementation of the TB DOTS program in terms of case finding and treatment outcomes. Furthermore, this can also be a good indicator for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals which includes the eradication of communicabie diseases in the Philippines in 2015.

values,attitudes, beliefs and ways
of living.
Andthe
reasonsof not
pursuing higher education arethe
distance of theschool, undeveloped roads, unhealthy politics and inequality of government services and poverty. The reliability
of
the findings was determined by Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient considering the mean from the different variables which are generated from the Likert scales.
lmplications for practice include: improvement of government support programs related to education; promoting and strengthening livelihood skills; equality in government services regardless of political
color.
lt is further recommended that school should initiate and strengthen community extension programs that will caterthe needs of the people; promote researches that will strengthened linkages to local government agencies and private sectors on specific knowledge and skills needed by the residents.

ABSTRACT
Stroke, in this case paralytic stroke, is sudden paralysis caused by a brain injury. As a result of paralysis,
post-stroke patients
will
have physical, psychological and social limitationsthat
can affecttheir
qualityof
life. As aconsequence, patients need help from others, especially from their family
to
go through their daily activities. The aim of study was to describe patterns of daily life in patients with post-stroke in Tomohon City. lt was a case study' Data were collected through in-depth interviewswith
observationsfrom five
participantswho
had experienced stroke and their family rnembers as a care giver. There were two stages used in determining the sample. First, aninterview with the physiotherapist, who did home care
for
patientswith
post-stroke at Health Center in fomohonwas
conducted. Therewere 11
post-stroke patientswho were qualified and met
the
characteristicsof
theparticipants: those who were not currenfly undergoing intensive care in hospital did not have poor prognosis, has been taken care of family members
for
more than six months, not cognitively and linguistically impaired. Second, interview and direct
observationswere
conductedon 11
patientswith
post-stroke,and
5
participants were chosen. The data obtained were analyzed through open coding then categories were created. Abstractions were explained by using descriptive approach. lnterview transcriptions were analyzeduntil no
new information were observed. From this research,it
was found that there were changes inthe life
patternof
post-stroke patients interms
of
their
daily activities,diet
and communication. The daily activities changed significantly;there
werelimitations due
to
physical weakness. As a result, the daily life of thefive
participants was limited onlyto
home activities. The type and food consumption were also affected. Both participants and caregivers perceived that theemotional sensitivity they had developed and the changes in term of family roles could lead
to
misunderstandings which would consequently result in quarreling.Marcusean Critique on TESDA's Competency-based Education: Toward a Holistic Tech-Voc Education in the Philippines
Arvin C. Revagorda

ABSTRACT
As
the
current
leadingauthority
in
Philippine tech-voc education, Technical Educationand
Skills Development Authority (TESDA) continues tofulfill
its role in ensuring that the State's economy remains stable and progressive through producing Filipino middle-skilled workforce that are globally competitive and efficient to workin the industry, local or international. To ensure the "marketability" of the students, TESDA adapted a
competency-based curriculum
patterned
on
the
industry's standardsand
developedby
their
experts.This
educational approach, however, in a Marcusean critique, is a perfect prototype of a "one-dimensional education" centered on creating "one-dimensional individuals"that
are technically competentto
work in the industry but not necessarilyefficient cognitively and socially
to
live withinthe
society. This is premised on a generally accepted beliefthat
a "one-dimensionalmind"
necessarily resultsin a
one-dimensional, dysfunctional society.This paper
argues,therefore,
that
there
is
an urgent
needto
reconfigure TESDAs
competency-based curriculumfrom
a
one-dimensionaltraining into
multi-dimensional learningthrough the
incorporationof
LiberalArts
subjectsin
its offered courses.
