(1)SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH. September 5, 2021 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. Lord, Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace..

(2) !Mmm@SMRla^lœ!@ppœœœœ . Dear Brothers and Sisters, What a strange image we find in our Gospel for today. This man who is deaf and has a speech impediment is brought to Jesus. The people who brought him ask Jesus to heal the man. Jesus pulls the man aside and then...s!cks his fingers in the mans ears, spits on the ground and then touches the mans tongue and groans to Heaven! What the heck is going on here? Could you imagine seeing this happen? So weird! Could you imagine it happening to you? Wow imagine what that must be like. Can you? . The First Reading, from the Prophet Isaiah, is so beau!ful. It shows us the reason we can be hopeful, even in a crazy world like ours. The reading isn't just a shiny happy pep talk. The reading recognizes that things can be scary, that people can be sick, have difficult situa!ons and be needy for the basics in life. The Lord says to those whose hearts are frightened, "Fear not”. No!ce that the Lord doesn't say that there is nothing to be afraid of. He recognizes that there are hard and scary things in our lives and s!ll he says "Fear not"! Why not? . So o4en when we are afraid, out gaze is limited to ourselves. We don't look past our own struggles. That is part of what fear does. Fear makes us focus on ourselves. But the Lord doesn't just say that we should get over ourselves. No, there is more. The Lord says, "Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, He comes with vindica!on." So what the Lord is saying is when you are afraid, when things seem too much, be strong, li4 your heads, and see that God is here to save you. Quit staring at yourself and your problems, look at God. He comes to you to win! . There are actually two cool connec!ons for us in our readings today. The First Reading is explicitly connected to the Gospel by a single unique word, Mogilalon. Dr. Sco9 Hahn says that this word, which means "speech impediment" is only used two !mes in the whole Bible. When? In our First Reading and in our Gospel for today. God wants us to know that this God, who Isaiah says is coming with vindica!on, is Jesus. He is real. He doesn't come to save this man in some vague sen!mental kind of way. He comes to take care of the problem. Don't be afraid. Jesus is here. He's got you! . The second connec!on that is important to note takes us back to where we started today. I asked you if you could imagine being a part of that finger in the ears, tongue touching, spit on the ground scene. What was your answer? Well the truth is, you don't need to imagine it, maybe just have a good memory. Because when you and I were bap!zed, the priest touched our ears and our mouths and prayed a prayer called the Ephphatha. The same word Jesus said in the Gospel today. We don't do the spi;ng part anymore which is a bummer! But the thing is, you were in this scene! So was I, and every !me I bap!ze a baby, the baby and I are in that scene again! What God wants us to know is that the God Isaiah prophesied about, the same Jesus who heals the man in the Gospel, that same God, He is here. He is here to win the ba9le for you! You are not alone! This week, as you face things that are tough and maybe even scary, know that God knows this. You are not weak because things are hard for you. You are not weak if you are afraid. But you are also not alone. Believe this. Be strong. Move your eyes off of yourself and your problems. Look up and see. Here is your God. He is real and he comes to save you. Yes, you. The one who had His priest touch your ears and your mouth and say "be opened”. You. Be strong. Fear not. Here is your God. He comes to you! . Peace and Love, Fr. Ma9 .
