Dear St. Francis Parishioners and Friends,
As we begin the month of September there are a lot of great saints modeling for us a courageous life of holi- ness. One of the tremendous changes brought about by Va;can Council II in the 1960’s was a recogni;on that all of us, not just priests, monks and nuns, are called to holiness of life. The Dogma;c Cons;tu;on on the Church, Lumen Genum, devoted a whole chapter on the call to holiness we all share by virtue of Bap-
;sm. “All the faithful of Christ of whatever rank or status, are called to the fullness of the Chris;an life and to the perfec;on of charity or love.” Living out this charity or love as an expression of holiness requires per- severance and courage but it leads to “a more human manner of living being promoted in this earthly socie- ty.” The more we live in charity and love the more human we are and the more human we make the cul- ture.
Among the saints of the month who inspire I would point out:
Peter Claver, a Spanish priest, whose feast day is September ninth. He cared for African slaves brought into the Spanish and Portuguese slave markets in Cartagena, Columbia in South America. He gave them food and medicine and taught them about Christ as someone who loved them more than their masters hated them.
On September 17 we have Hildegard of Bingen (Germany) who died in 1097. She was a Benedic;ne Abbess, theologian, mys;c, and poet. She is one of only a few women Doctors of the Church and given that honor in 2012. She was one of the most influen;al women of her ;me.
Andrew Kim Taegon and companions are Martyrs we celebrate on September 20
th. In the 1800’s in Korea.
Andrew Kim and many others wanted to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. He and 103 others were tortured and killed for speaking about Jesus. While some were priests most, 92, were laypeople, 47 women and 45 men. In 1984, Pope John Paul II, celebrated a Mass in Korea naming them saints and today there are about four million Catholics in Korea.
September is filled with great feasts and saints. Find a saint you like and paKern some part of your life aLer him or her.
Go out and make Jesus famous!
