ABSTRACT
This research analyzes the grammatical form, the meaning and the motive of erotic register used in Jakarta Undercover 3 novel by Moammar Emka . The type of this researchis descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is the register of erotic expression used in Jakarta Undercover 3. The data are words and phrases that used in specific situation that is in the novel. In analyzing the data, the researcher analyzing the form of the register by referring the grammatical form, analyzing the meaning of register by referring the Larson’s theory and analyzing the motive of using erotic register by Hockett’s theory. Based on the data analysis, the researcher finds that there are the grammatical form 4 data of noun, 2 data of verb, 1 datum of preposition, 5 data of compound,2 data of abbreviation, 20 data of noun phrase, 1datum of adjective phrase and 1 datum of verb phrase. Based on the meaning the researcher finds 33 data in contextual meaning and 3 data in lexical meaning. Based on the motive, the researcher finds 25 data of need filling motives and 11 data of prestige filling motive.
2 A. INTRODUCTION
Novel is the fiction story in writing or words and have the intrinsic and
extrinsic elements. A novel usually told human life in their interaction with
environment and each other. In a novel, the author make every effort to direct the
reader to the reality of life images through the stories contained in the novel. A
novel should written in a narrative that is sometimes mixed descriptions to
describe the atmosphere. Must also be realistic novel, the author means is a
response to environmental situation.
Novel forms are usually longer than 10.000 words and has pretty complex
storyline. In Indonesia, the development of novel started since 1920. Many
writers have created many novels. One of them is Moammar Emka.
Moammar Emka has released more than 20 books, both fiction and non-fiction. His first book Jakarta Undercover (sex’n the City) for about a year has experiencing reprint as many as 24 times. His books also gain success, including
his book Jakarta Undercover 3 (Forbidden City).
Jakarta Undercover 3 (Forbidden City) novel contains a variety of
investigative reporting sexual lifestyle and entertainment are surprising. Emka invites the reader into a world which he called “Forbidden City”. In the novel there are many terms used by night society that can called erotic register. Erotic
means a term meaning sexually stimulating or sexually arousing. The erotic
register are lady escort, swinger party, striptease and many other register that
unfamiliar..
Based on the description above, the writer is interested in describing erotic
register in Jakarta Undercover 3 novel by Moammar Emka. In this novel, Emka
writes a lot of erotic register that usual people do not understand the meaning.
This novel gives different information, sensational and surprising about sexual
activities in Jakarta. The phenomenon appointed by Moammar Emka is really
B. Research Method
This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. It means that the
study basically wants to describe qualitatively in the form of words that series of
number and statistics (Lindolf in Usdiyanto, 2004:39).
The object of the research is the register of erotic expression used in Jakarta
Undercover 3 novel.
In this research, the data are words and phrases that are used in specific
situation that is in the novel. The source of data is the story of Jakarta
Undercover 3 novel by Moammar Emka. The researcher chooses Jakarta
Undercover 3 because in this novel bestselling like Jakarta Undercover 1 but in
this novel Emka call the phenomenon in Jakarta as Forbidden City because all
kinds of entertainment including sex entertainment is easily accessible and
purchased anytime and anywhere, and Emka use everyday language to make it
more easily to understood by the reader.
The technique of collecting data is observation and documentation. In order to
collect, the writer goes through the steps as follows: searching Jakarta
Undercover 3 novel from the book store, reading the novel and give sign to the
erotic register and then writing the register words and phrase. Coding the data.
For example : 01/ME/CP01/PG02/W or Ph, 01 is the number of datum, ME is
Moammar Emka, CP is the chapter, PG is the page , and W or Ph is the Word or
Phrase.
In doing the analysis, the researcher takes the following steps: analyzing the
data by identifying the grammatical form of the words and phrases, analyzing the
meaning based on the Larson’s theory, analyzing the motive referring Hockett’s
4 C. Research Finding and Discussion
Research Finding
Based on grammatical form, the writer will differentiate two kinds of data, they are word and phrases. The writer finds twenty two data of phrases and
fourteen data of words.
Based on meaning of register, the writer differentiate two kinds of meaning, they are lexical meaning and contextual meaning. The writer finds the high
frequency data of register meaning are in contextual meaning. The data consist of
thirty three contextual meaning and three lexical meaning.
Based on the motive of using erotic register, the writer will differentiate two kinds of data, they are prestige filling motive and need filling motive. The
writer finds twenty eleven data of prestige filling motive and twenty five data of
need filling motive. Beside that, the writer also finds the meaning based on the
context situation. It consists of field, mode and tenor. It has purpose to fulfill the
meaning of each term erotic register on linguistic form. So we can study deeply
and understand the hidden meaning.
Discussion
Based on the data analysis, the writer finds and arranges several findings.
They are based on the grammatical form of register, the meaning of erotic register
and the motive of using erotic register in Jakarta Undercover 3 novel.
1. Grammatical Form of Register
Based on data analysis, it can be classified into two forms. They are words
and phrases. They are described in the form of the table as follows:

From the table above, the writer finds the high frequency data of linguistics
form are in noun phrase. The writer finds 20 data of noun phrase, 4 data of noun,
5 data of compound word, 2 data of verb, 2 data of abbreviation, 1 datum of
preposition, 1 datum of adjective phrase and 1 datum of verb phrase. Noun
phrase often finds in Jakarta Undercover 3 novel. Because the novel talks sexual
lifestyle and entertainment so new terms formed by add other elements of word
such as adjective, verb, adverb, etc.
This research is different from the first previous study conducted by Susilo
about the register analysis in streetball game. His finding is two form of English
register used in streetball game, namely word and compound word. He is also
found the meaning of register used in streetball games are divided into three
categories; there are field, mode, and tenor.
In this research, the writer finds the grammatical form of words and phrases.
Based on word, the data classified into five; they are noun (4 data), verb (2 data),
preposition (1 datum), compound (5 data) and abbreviation (2 data). Based on
phrase, the data classified into three; they are noun phrase (20 data), adjective
phrases (1 datum) and verb phrase (1 datum).
This research also different from the second previous study was conducted
by Safitri about English register in sport column taken from Kompas. She found
linguistic form in sport column of Kompas; namely word and phrase. She also
found the comparison between lexical and contextual meaning and the change of
meaning of English register in Sport Column of Kompas.
2. The Meaning of Register
The meaning of register is analyzed with lexical and contextual meaning. The
writer finds them in Jakarta Undercover 3 novel. The research finding is described

and need fillin motive. The writer finds them in Jakarta Undercover 3 novel. The
research finding is described in the form of table as follows:

filling motives. The writer finds the high frequency data of motives are in need
filling motives. The data consist of 25 data need filling motives (69,5%) and 11
data prestige filling (30,5%). The writer uses need filling motives to show the
reader of novel that using English is need, or could not be found the similar
meaning in the target language.
D. Conclusion
Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer draws some conclusion as

The writer finds the grammatical form of words and phrases. Based on word,
the data classified into five; they are noun (5 data), verb (2 data), preposition (1
datum), compound (4 data) and abbreviation (2 data). Based on phrase, the data
classified into three; they are noun phrase (20 data), adjective phrases (1 datum)
and verb phrase (1 datum).
The writer finds the high frequency data of linguistics form are in noun phrase.
The writer finds 20 data of noun phrase, 5 data of noun, 4 data of compound word,
2 data of verb, 2 data of abbreviation, 1 datum of preposition, 1 datum of adjective
phrase and 1 datum of verb phrase. Noun phrase often finds in Jakarta Undercover
3 novel. Because the novel talks sexual lifestyle and entertainment so new terms
formed by add other elements of word such as adjective, verb, adverb, etc.).

From the table above, the writer finds the high frequency data of register
meaning are in contextual meaning. The data consist of 33 contextual meaning
(91,67%) and 3 lexical meaning (8,33 %). Appearing of contextual meaning is
more frequently because there are a lot of new vocabulary (new phrase) is created
from combine some term. It is appropriates with around situation. So it creates a
broader meaning and understanding. These meaning cannot find in the dictionary.
3. The Motive of using erotic register
The writer finds the high frequency data of motives are in need filling motives.
The data consist of 25 data need filling motives (69,5%) and 11 data prestige
filling (30,5%). The writer uses need filling motives to show the reader of novel
that using English is need, or could not be found the similar meaning in the target
