1 A. Background of the Study
Nowadays, novel is the most literary that widely circulate and read by
the public. Novel is the most popular literary work in the world because novel
has good communication to the public. Besides it is interesting, sometimes
novel can inspire the readers.
Novel is one form of literary work. Novel is the fiction story in writing
or words and have the intrinsic and extrinsic elements. A novel usually told
about human life in their interaction with the environment and each other. In a
novel, the author make every effort to direct the reader to the reality of life
images through the stories contained in the novel. A novel should be written
in a narrative that is sometimes mixed descriptions to describe the atmosphere.
Must also be realistic novel, the author means is a response to environmental
situations.
Novel forms are usually longer than 10,000 words and has a pretty
complex storyline. In Indonesia, the development of novel started since 1920.
Many writers have created many novels. One of them is Moammar Emka. He
city of Tuban, East Java, 13 February 1974. When finished high school level
education in Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) in Pondok Pesantren Mamba'ul
Ma'Arif Denayar Jombang in 1993, he continued his education to the State
Islamic Institute (IAIN) Jakarta in Arabic faculty. In 1996, he began his
journalism career as a journalist in the Daily News Yudha. A year later he
moved to Prospect magazine. In 1998 he moved to Asylum Metro tabloid. His
career in the Asylum Metro only lasted 6 months and the last in line
magazines. Currently, besides being a contributor to the "Sex in the City" in
the X-Men's Magazine, he is also in the business of law enforcement and
public relations.
Over the span of 9 years, he has released more than 20 books, both
fiction and non-fiction. His works are Jakarta Undercover (Sex'n the city),
Red Diary (Catatan Harian Lelaki Malam), Jakarta Undercover 2 (karnaval
malam), Ade Ape dengan Mak Erot?, Beib ... Aku sakau, 365 Hari 3 Cinta 2
selingkuhanDay, Siti Madonna, 132 km SMS Cinta Abiss, SMS Lovaholic,

His first book Jakarta Undercover (Sex'n the city) for about a year has
experiencing reprint as many as 24 times and his comic version has been
circulating since October 2003. This novel, in the English edition, published
Thailand, Philippines, and is now entering its 4th printing. His books also gain
success, including his book Jakarta Undercover 3 (Forbidden City).
Jakarta Undercover 3 (Forbidden City) novel contains a variety of
investigative reporting sexual lifestyle and entertainment are surprising. Emka
invites the reader into a world which he called “Forbidden City”. In the novel
there are many terms used by night society that can be called erotic register.
Erotic means a term meaning sexually stimulating or sexually arousing. The
erotic registers are, lady escort, swinger party, striptease and many other
register that unfamiliar. To give more understanding an example is presented
below:
“Kalo nggak masochist, siapa yang kuat tubuhnya ditempelin
lilin..”
The erotic register found in the sentence is “masochist”. In a
sentence, it functions as noun. Noun is characteristically designed to the
people, name, thing, etc. The field of the word is in the story of Jakarta Undercover 3. The mode is a written language form. The tenor is the author as the speaker and the readers as the hearer. In contextual meaning, Masochist
is defined as a person who gained sexual satisfaction when abused both
emotionally and physically by another person or himself.
Based on the description above, the writer is interested in describing
novel, Emka writes a lot of erotic register that usual people do not understand
the meaning. From that several reasons above, the writer is encouraged to
entitle the research as the following A Sociolinguistics Study of Erotic
Register in Jakarta Undercover 3 novel by Moammar Emka. This novel gives
different information, sensational and surprising about sexual activities in
Jakarta. The phenomenon appointed by Moammar Emka is really interesting,
especially if it is related with cultural problems.
A. Previous Study
The first previous study is conducted by Susilo (UMS, 2010)entitled,
“A Socioling Study on Register used in Streetball Game (case study of register
in solo streetball). In his study, he describes about English register used in
streetball game. The result of his study shows that there are two form of
English register used in streetball game, namely word and compound word.
He is also found the meaning of register used in streetball games are divided
into three categories, there are field, mode, and tenor.
The second previous study is Safitri (UMS, 2010), with her research
entitled “Analysis of English Sport Register in Sport Column of Kompas”. In
her study she describes about English register in sport column taken from
Kompas. The result of her study shows that there are two form of English
found the comparison between lexical and contextual meaning and the change
of meaning of English register in Sport Column of Kompas. From her
research, she concluded that English register in Sport Column of Kompas
based on the change of meaning the real meaning and the new meaning of
English register do not have the real meaning as the highest percentage than
another.
The third previous study by Yetti Faridatul Ulfah (UNS:2010) with her
research entitled“Register Analysis in English Movie Advertisements of
www.21-cineplex.com (A Sociolinguistics Study)”. Her type of research is a descriptive qualitative. Then she focused on how characterize linguistics
factors, non linguistics factors and both language variety and figures of speech
characterize the register of english movie advertisement of
www.21-cineplex.com. She analyzes the register based on the linguistics (language
style, sentence structure, and figure of speech), non linguistics factors, the
varieties and figure of speech.
The fourth previous study is Rosaria (UMS, 2008) with her research
entitle “A Descriptive Study of English Register used in trading Bisnis
Indonesia newspaper”. In her analysis, she found that generally registers are
usede in trading in Bisnis Indonesia newspaper are in form of words and
phrases. She also found the change of meaning of English register used in
used trading in Bisnis Indonesia newspaper based on the change of meaning,
the real meaning and the new meaning does not have the real meaning.
Based on those researchers, the writer can find differences and
similarities between previous research, and this research is similar with
previous study above who analyze the English register. Besides similarity, this
research also has differences. The differences between two researches are
located on the data and data source. The data used by the writer are erotic
register and the data source is from Jakarta Undercover 3 novel.
B. Problem Statement
The problems of this research are formulated as follows :
1. What are the grammatical forms of erotic register in Jakarta Undercover 3
novel?
2. What are the meaning of erotic register produced in Jakarta Undercover 3
novel?
3. What are the motive of using erotic registers in Jakarta Undercover 3
novel?
C. Objective of the Study
Based on the problem statement above, the researcher has the

novel.
2. To clarify the meaning of erotic register that use in Jakarta Undercover 3
novel.
3. To clarify the motive of using erotic registers in Jakarta Undercover 3
novel.
D. Benefit of the Study
There are two benefit of the study in analyzing erotic register in
Jakarta Undercover 3 novel.
1. Theoretical Benefit
a. Give a clear theory of sociolingistics and the meaning of erotic register
in Jakarta Undercover 3 novel.
b. Give some contribution to the enlargement of vocabulary of the
readers.
2. Practical Benefit
The research can be used as the reference for those who want to
conduct further research about the same topic.
E. Research Paper Organization
The organization of this research paper is given in order to understand
Chapter I is an introduction which consists of the background of the
study, previous study, problem statement, objectives of the study, benefit of
the study and research paper organization.
Chapter II is underlying theory. This chapter describes the notion of
sociolinguistics, language variation, the notion of register, context of situation,
form of language, the notion of meaning, types of meaning and motive.
Chapter III is research method. This chapter deals with type of the
research, object of the research, data and data source, technique of collecting
data and technique of analyzing data.
Chapter IV is research result and discussion. In this chapter the writer
will describe data analysis, and research finding.
