ABSTRACT

A song lyric is a text specifically made as an accompaniment for music. It has some purposes; they are to be sung and to be heard. A song lyric is similar as poem, because, basically, a song lyric is a poem which is sung. Sometimes, the meaning of a song lyric viewed as the most difficult part of a song, although it is simple if it is seen from the form. This is especially when the listeners can not catch the meaning of a song lyric, which is usually hidden by the author with certain type of language style.

A stylistic analysis can be used to interpret and understand the meaning of a text in this case song lyric, by examining and explaining the foregrounded features that are used in the lyric.

There are four song lyrics by Audioslave used in this study, each of them consists of many foregrounded features, they are “Set it Off”, “I am The Highway”, “The Last Remaining Light”, and “Show Me How to Live:”, all of those are written by Chris Cornell, the vocalist. In analysing those lyrics, first, the writer makes the general interpretation of each song, then pointing out the foregrounded features used. The next step is analysing each lyric by using the concept stylistic analysis, and the last, explaining the effect in the meaning of each lyric.

ABSTRAKSI

Sebuah lirik lagu adalah sebuah teks yang secara khusus dibuat sebagai pelengkap untuk musik. Sebuah lirik lagu diciptakan dengan beberapa tujuan, yaitu untuk dinyanyikan dan didengarkan. Lirik lagu sama dengan puisi, karena pada dasarnya sebuah lirik lagu andala sebuah puisi yang dinyanyikan. Kadang-kadang arti dari sebuah lagu ditampilkan sebagai bagian yang paling sulit dari sebuah lagu, meskipun sederhana jika dilihat dari bentuknya. Hal in terjadi khususnya ketika para pendengar tidak dapat menangkap arti dari lirik lagu tersebut., yang biasanya “disembunyikan” oleh sang pencipta lagu dengan menggunakan gaya bahasa tertentu.

Sebuah stylistic analisis dapat digunakan untuk memberi gambaran dan mengerti arti dari sebuah lagu, dengan menentukan dan menjelaskan bahasa-bahasa yang tidak biasa digunakan, baik fungsi maupun normanya, dan diluar dugaan kita (foregrounded features).

Ada empat lagu dari Audioslave ynag digunakan dalam skripsi ini, masing-masing terdiri dari banyak bahasa yang menyimpang dari norma bahasa yang ada. Lagu-lagunya adalah; “Set it Off”, “I am The Highway”, The Last Remaining Light” dan “ Show Me How To live”, semua lagu tersebut ditulis oleh Chris Cornell, sang vokalis. Dalam menganalisa lirik-lirik lagu tersebut, prtama-tama penulis membuat gambaran umum dari setiap lirik lagu, kemudian menentukan foregrounded features yang digunakan. Langkah selanjutnya yaitu menganalisa masing-masing lirik dengan menggunakan stylistic analysis konsep, dan yang trekhir menjelaskan efek dari penggunaan foregrounded features terhadap arti dari lirik-lirik lagu tersebut.
