Developing of Logical Thinking About Decreasing Property Prices Based on 2008’s Economic Crisis Using Mind Mapping Teaching Method In Public Economic

Abstract

The result of pilot study showing that the most students who studied say that most savely investment and give high capital gain is property investment. Empirically, in the United States 2008, property investment has led to lost (due to price reduction) and have impact on world economics downturned. Logical thinking on declining property prices became difficult to construct in Indonesian Society, because of their mind set that property investment is nothing to lose investment.
The purpose of this study is developing logical thinking on declining property prices based on
2008’s economic crisis using mind mapping teaching method. This research is Classroom Action Research that have done in 1st semester 2013/2014 in public economic course of economics education major, FKIP-UKSW, Salatiga. The research uses Kemmis and
McTaggart Model (1988) in 2 cycles. Increasing of student’s logical thinking evaluated by individual test.
In the begining of this study, the lecturer ilustrated the property prices declining problem. Further more, the lecturer indicate the possibility of the declining of property prices by using the logical supply and demand law. In the main point, the students explore the relevant information to the group. In this exploration process, there are various resources can be used
such as the book of “A Colossal Failure of Common Sense: The Incredible Inside Story of the Collapse of Lehman Brothers” (Mc Donald and Robinson, 2009) and Blommberg websites. Then, discussing the result of the exploration in the group and illustrating in the mind map.
After illustrated the mind map, the lecturer evaluated the student’s result of studying by
presenting the mind map of the group individually, and the brought into discussions to find out if the students developing their logic or not.
Introduction
Around of the world have to know that there was economic crisis in US last several years. Indonesian people call it global crisis. The cirisis teach all people to be more carefull in investment.
The crisis caused by decreasing price of property that make property investors lost. Decreasing price of property is uncommon situation that was happened in US. According to US statistical index, price of property always increasing for around 5% annually before 2008. Based on the data, property investment is the best investment in US, due to bad investment condition in US while Chinese economic growth. In this condition, many people decided to invest in property, including small scale business. Actually, they couldn’t afford to pay a house. But, the banks gave them challenge to own a house by interest rate inreased credit model. In the first and second year, they just paying for 0% of interest. Then, the interest will increased until 1 or 2 percent. After they calculated the installment, they were not sure that they can pay for 1 or 2 percent interest. But, the sallesman, told that next 2 or 3 years, their
house price will increased up to 10 percent. So, when they can’t pay the installments, they
may sell their house more expensive. Because of that situation, many small scale business people bought houses. Three years later, around 2007, many people can’t pay the installments. When they want to sell their house, no body want to buy because many people have bought houses for the last 3 years. According to supply and demmand law, if there is less demmand, the prices will be decreased. This case is proof of that law. Because of no body want to buy property in 2008, and many people want to sell, it caused property price fall.
In Indonesia, many people believe that property investment is nothing to lose investment. Although US financial crisis happened 6 years ago, Indonesian people still believe that property price will be always increase.
Based on this conditions, this research purposed to develop logical thinking about decreasing property prices to a part of Indonesian people, who are high school students. To develop logical thinking about decreasing property prices, this research based on 2008’s economic crisis, and using mind mapping teaching method. Through this study, it is expected the students will believe that property prices possible to decrease, and they will be more carefull while investing in property.
Methodology
This research is Classroom Action Research, and have done in 1st semester 2013/2014. Object of this study is economics education major students, FKIP-UKSW, Salatiga who joining public economic course with 20 number of students. Mind Maps teaching method (Buzan, 2012) uses in this study. This method was combined with Indonesia Teaching Process Standardize (Permendiknas 41/2007). On this combination, teaching and learning process will be consist of exploration section (read some book or collecting relevant information); elaboration section (ilustrating the global crisys mechanism, then present it); and confirmation (discussion with lecturer). The Class Room Action Research model that match with this plan is Kemmis and McTaggart Model (Kemmis, McTaggart, and Nixon, 2013).
70 that have done in 2 cycles. Then increasing of student’s logical thinking evaluated by individual assessment (interview). This research have began at February 8, 2013, and end at March 22, 2013 in 7 meeting. The first meeting was pilot study, then second meeting was exploration on first cycle, thirth meeting was elaboration, and fourth meeting was evaluating on first cycle. Then, fifth, sixth, and seventh meeting was exploration, elaboration, and evaluation on second cycle.
Research Process
This research has began at February 8, 2013. In this class, lecturer asking students about their decission when they would like to invest. Most student answering its question by property investment. When the lecturer ask about their reason, and the students say that property investment is nothing to lose investment. They say that it is impossible for property prices to decrease. In the next question, lecturer asking for student’s knowledge about global crisis 2008. The answer is no students know well about its case. Then the lecturer ilustrated the property prices declining problem. Further more, the lecturer indicate the possibility of the declining of property prices by using the logical supply and demand law. But, in this case, students do not agree with its law on property market. They think that the law not applicable on property. Based on result of that pilot study, this research done.
Lecturer deviding students into 5 groups (4 students each other). The students explore the relevant information to the group. In this exploration process, there are various resources can be used such as the book of “A Colossal Failure of Common Sense: The Incredible Inside Story of the Collapse of Lehman Brothers” (Mc Donald and Robinson, 2009) that have already translated into Indonesian language and Blommberg websites. Both of 2 resources in exploration process, especially the book wondering students. Many students amazed when read the book, and the other students feel sad when they know about capital losses in global crisis.
Then, the students discussing the result of the exploration in the group and illustrating in the mind map. They drawing several nodes and put line or arrow between node. The mind map look like algoritm mechanism that ilustrating scenario of global crisis. Every students must participate in drawing the mind map.
After illustrated the mind map, the lecturer evaluated the student’s result of studying by presenting the mind map of the group individually to lecturer. Then, lecturer asking students about their mind map to find out if the students developing their logic or not.
Then, lecturer and observer discuss about the las teaching and learning process in reflection session. It means the first cicle of research has been done. Due to reflection result, lecturer find that many students feel bored when they must read many pages of the book (that more than 300 pages). This condition impacted to asessment that many students do not get main idea of the book. Based on this condition, lecturer try to use other sources in next cycle.
Research Result
[image:4.595.217.378.224.477.2]In the pilot study, all students believe that property investment is nothing to lose investment and do not know cause of global crisys. After first cycle, several students have logic of decreasing property prices. But, in this cycle, only a few students who take learning effectively. The assessment result of this cycle show at table 1.

[image:5.595.220.378.487.691.2]Based on its result, lecturer have change the lesson plan of second cycle. Based on this changes, all students have upper passing grade of achievement, that mean end of this study. Table 2 and figure 2 are the proof of this condition.

Conclusions and Future Study
Based on the result of the study concluded that the use of mind mapping teaching method, it has been sucessfully to develop the students logical thinking on the declining of the prices of property in 2 cycle of Class Room Action Research. Besides, there were some other competencies developed through the implementation of this method, i.e rapid reading capability, good team work, and the capability to present and consistent on their opinions. Therefore, this method is applicable in public economic course in the dicining of the property prices in particular.
This study suggest for future study in developing students skill on predicting Indonesia (or other countries) economic on the future based on today’s condition. In Indonesia, there are many investment in property today. Based on this condition, students can anticipate the future crisys based on their predicting skill.
