ABSTRACT
In patient with Diabetes Mellitus and pre-diabetes, the oral glucose tolerance test usually shows an abnormal value. Thus, it is recommended that diabetic patient should increase consumption of vegetables. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is one of the excellent sources of high soluble fibers and low glycemic index and load which can help to improve and maintain the postprandial blood glucose level.
Based on this, a laboratory experimental study was conducted to know the effect of broccoli in preventing increase of blood glucose level at 2-hours postprandial. About 28 healthy adult male Swiss-Webster mice were used, divided into 4 groups of seven. All groups received glucose 50% 0.5 mL orally with Group I as control. Meanwhile, Group II, III and IV received 0.13 g, 0.26g and 0.52g mashed broccoli respectively also given orally. The blood glucose level was measured before and after 2 hours giving glucose and mashed broccoli.
The percentage increase of blood glucose level were analyzed and the result shows that there are no significant difference between the control and experimental groups (p = 0.369).
As a conclusion, there is no effect of broccoli in preventing increase of blood glucose level at 2-hours postprandial on mice.
