1. INTRODUCTION
Life is free, but there is always a mystery. The people do not know
what will happen in their lives. They do not know everything that will occur in
next time. Mystery is something of which the cause or origin is hidden or
impossible to understand (Hornby, 1987: 559). In the other case, life is a
choice. People usually say that life is choice; they can choose one or more
thing that they want. They can choose the bad thing or the good one because
they want to live in happiness and peace.
For reaching the happiness and the peace in life, the people must make
such kind of struggle. Struggle is an energetic attempt to achieve something.
Struggle means to exert strenuous effort against opposition. The struggle has
many varies such as struggle to get achievement, struggle for survive, struggle
for justice, struggle to get a job, and also struggle for life. Many ways are used
to make necessities come true. They can do everything to struggle something
they need.
In the literary works the author always depicts the human struggle in
the characters of the story when they strive to get their life goal. Even people
as a creatively unique tries to share his attention through his literary work,
which is influenced by what he has experience and investigated throughout his
daily life. It is clear that most of the literary works are the mirror of human
life, which represents the struggle for the perfection and superiority in order to
reduce their weakness.
Literature as the reflection of human activity is created for
understanding human’s existence along with all of mental and
inner-self-problem. Literature and psychology have the same object of research that is
human being. Literature has closed relationship to psychology (Wellek, 1956:

3. ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
3.1ANALYSIS
In this movie, Guy Ritchie created his major character namely
Sherlock Holmes. He was at first very ambitious for getting the main
point of the mystery. Sherlock Holmes is an intelligent from the London
Police department. He and his partner, Dr. John Watson, believe they
have stopped one of London's most dangerous killers, Lord Blackwood,
responsible for four deaths and about to commit a fifth when he is
apprehended. Several months later he is hanged for his crimes but
rumors begin to circulate that he is in fact still alive, having used
managed and the black arts to escape society's judgment. With the
assistance of the very capable Irene Adler, Holmes and Watson stopped
Blackwood before he can initiate his master plan: the takeover of the
British government and eventually, world domination. In the end of the
story, Sherlock Holmes fined the way out of the mystery. There is no
magic, but the science can make all of these.
In Sherlock Holmes, Guy Ritchie uses traditional plot, which is
the ' exposition of the beginning, the middle, and the end. The elements
of traditional plot refer to the basic elements. This movie uses point of
view of the eyes of the character. In this case, the main character is
Sherlock Holmes.
Cinematography is produced by manipulating film and camera in
limiting time. In this movie, the cinematography divided into three
5
qualities of the shot. Second, there is a framing of the shat. And the last
is duration.
Setting place and time were taken in London city on 1891. It
insists the Baker Street in London. And then, this movie uses Victorian
age style on the costume. This movie uses the dark lighting to produce
images that support in action mystery movie.
3.2DISCUSSION
Based on the individual psychological analysis, there are some
factors; which influence how the main character called Sherlock Holmes
struggle for life. Sherlock Holmes, the major character of the movies, is
the portraits of human who has an ambition for getting the truth of the life,
but he also struggle for his happiness. Therefore, it is appropriate to
analyze the movie, using Adler psychology theory since his thought is full
of conflict among the inferiority feeling, striving for superiority, style of
life, social interest, creative power and fictional finalism.
Sherlock Holmes, the major character in the movie surely has
inferiority feeling that should be faced and finished. In the movie, he is
man who always felt scared when he cannot solve the mystery. He tried to
get a clue and find out what is the main idea of the mystery.
Sherlock Holmes feels inferior because he cannot find the answer
of the Lord Blackwood’s mystery. He also feels down when the time to
proof the truth would be end. By his inferiority feeling, he changes it to be
a great power and be a superior intelligent. Then, he sets a great design to
find out the answer of the mystery namely struggle for life. For the reason,
he changed his inferiority into a great conscious and become a detective.
Therefore, he strives hard to reach his final goal by wrong direction. Later
all of his great efforts are useless then he begins to emerge his struggle by
excessive ambition.
However, his final goal in excessive ambition influences his style
of life. It leads him to the way of the problem. He has backed up by his
6
slaves of Professor Moriarty. The happy ending was still in Sherlock
Holmes side, because he can finish his purpose.
After analyzing the relation between struggle for life and Sherlock
Holmes’s personality, Guy Ritchie wants to show that a human, everybody
has their problems in right ways or even in a wrong ways.
Based on the analysis above, it is obvious to state that the basic
principle of Sherlock Holmes is one consistent with Guy Ritchie’s idea
that he wants to communicate to the reader viewed from the individual
psychological perspective.
4. CONCLUSION
First, there is a close relationship between a literary work and
psychological phenomena. Movie as one of the literary works describes a
story of human’s life through his fictional character. The fact, the movie
constitutes that a director’s imagination can reveal the truth, sadness,
happiness, and also struggle of life as well as human experiences. Literary
work is used as a means of expressing an emotion, style of life, social interest
and view of the author toward with human life. The literature and psychology
actually have a very close relationship with human life.
Second, the struggle for life of the major character, Sherlock Holmes,
has relationship with Adler’s personality theory, individual psychology. It is
consist of inferiority feeling, striving for superiority, style of life, social
interest, creative power and fictional finalism. Inferiority feeling of the major
character leads him to be a man with the struggle. He feels inferior of being an
intelligent in his office. He feels depressed when he got the death lock in his
case. The point of the major character is creative power. Sherlock Holmes
shows what makes a brilliant people we have to get the power. Because when
we got weakness, we will be the last number in our life.
Third, in this movie, Guy Ritchie seems to give a description that the
struggle for life is belongs to human being. Especially when we have a
purpose or dreams, we have to strive until the end of the time. Maybe until we
7
the fear. Life is a condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic
objects. Sherlock Holmes shows that there is always a way if we have an
intention.
