This paper, entitled “The Use of Declarative Sentence in Promoting Poster on Twitter”, discussed the promotion of poster using the declarative sentence on the social media Twitter. This paper is expected to give the reader more knowledge about internet marketing, especially twitter marketing.

The method used in this paper is descriptive method. The writer described and explained many kinds of the declarative sentence that the writer made to promote poster on Twitter during the job training at Si Dupan Poster.

ABSTRAK

Laporan yang berjudul “The Use of Declrative Sentence in Promoting Poster on Twitter” ini membahas mengenai promosi poster menggunakan kalimat deklaratif pada media sosial Twitter. Laporan ini diharapkan agar dapat memberikan pengetahuan tambahan mengenai internet marketing, khususnya Twitter marketing bagi para pembaca.

Metode yang digunakan dalam laporan ini adalah metode deskriptif. Penulis menjelaskan dan memaparkan berbagai jenis kalimat deklaratif yang dibuat penulis ketika melaksanakan kerja praktek di perusahaan Si Dupan Poster. Kalimat deklaratif tersebut dibuat untuk mempromosikan poster pada media sosial Twitter.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Topic

Job training is one of the subjects in 7th semester in English Department of Indonesia University of Computer. The students have to fulfill this subject by working on the company or creating the entrepreneurship business. The writer then decided to take the entrepreneurship for his job training. The writer established the company running the business on English poster printing. By doing this job training, the writer got experience on managing the company; furthermore, the writer also learned how to make the successful company.

Based on the explanation above, the writer decided to raise the topic “the use of declarative sentence in promoting poster on Twitter” for job training report.

1.2 Scope

This paper describes the use of declarative sentence when promoting poster on Twitter. The data is taken from the job training which was done by the writer.

1.3 Objectives

The purposes of writing this topic and the purposes of this job training are mentioned sequentially:

1. To describe the use of declarative sentence in promoting poster on Twitter during the training job in Si Dupan Poster

2. To acquire the experience on managing the company

3. To fulfill the subject of job training in English Department of Indonesia University of Computer

internet, especially on social media Twitter. In addition, this paper is expected to give a reference for students who take entrepreneurship field in promoting their product on Twitter using the declarative sentence.

1.5 The Framework of the Theory

Promoting on a social media is different from promoting in other fields. It is necessary to make the promotion simple, to the point, casual, and friendly style as stated by Gardner:

Keeping the writing in your blog short, to the point, and useful. You don’t

need to finely craft every word; in fact, levity and a casual, friendly style

can serve you well. (2005: 20)

In order to make that kind of promotion, the writer then chooses a declarative sentence. In the book “How to Get More Effective Advertising More Efficiently,” Mel Sokotch stated:

Positioning is simply, and ultimately, what the marketer wants the brand

to stand for in the customer's mind, and that's done best with a short

The statement above shows that the best way to make a positioning of a company is using a declarative sentence. Promoting is a kind of positioning, so it means that a declarative sentence is a good way for promoting.

Therefore, the writer uses a declarative sentence to promote poster on Twitter. The writer made a declarative sentence in a short and straight to the point style as it was stated by Gardner. In addition, the writer also made it in a casual and friendly style to get more atention from the customer.

1.6 Method

The method used in this paper is descriptive method. Ariola (2006: 47) states that “the purpose of the descriptive method is to describe “what is”. It deals with the prevailing condition of objects, people, and events”. Thus, in this

paper, the writer will describe and explain many kinds of the declarative sentence used to promote poster on Twitter during the job training.

CHAPTER II

THE BUSINESS OF SI DUPAN POSTER

2.1 The General Description of Si Dupan Poster

Si Dupan Poster, a blend of Sastra Inggris Dua Ribu Delapan Poster, is a company which was established on July 2011 in Bandung. It located at Jl. Tubagus Ismail Bawah no. 40, Bandung, West Java. The company produces the educational poster about English lesson material for the beginner.

The establishment of this company based on the fact that the students need various media to help them in learning English. The tool which is commonly used by student today is an old-fashioned book, and it makes them feel reluctant to learn from it. Therefore, the company provides the simple and nice poster as an alternative media in learning English. The students will learn some specific English materials easily from this poster.

2.2 Position and Coordination

2.2.1 Job Position

The position of the writer in Si Dupan Poster is a leader of the company. The writer also worked as a financial manager and material-processing manager.

2.2.2 Coordination

During the job training, as a leader of the company, the writer coordinates with all managers, including design manager, promotion manager, material-processing manager, production manager, and transportation manager. The writer gave the instruction to them and collected the report from them. In the end of the production time, the writer also evaluated their performance when running the company and evaluated the products which had produced by the company.

2.3 Responsibilities

As a leader of the company, the writer had responsibilities to lead the business of the company and to give the instruction to all managers. Moreover, the writer also had to promote the product and to arrange the financial report of the company.

CHAPTER III

THE DESCRIPTION OF THE TOPIC

3.1 The use of declarative sentence in promoting poster on Twitter

3.1.1 Explanation

Today, the huge number of internet user has grown the popularity of internet marketing. There are many places that the company can promote their product on internet, such as blog, forum, news portal, or even commercial site. The rapid grown of social networking sites also has a contribution to the internet marketing popularity. The social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus are the favorite places for promoting because their products will be viewed by millions users. Therefore, the writer chooses the social media Twitter for promoting the poster.

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging that gives you the ability

You’ve probably heard the term elevator pitch, which comes from the idea that you’re on an elevator with a potential client, and you have about ten

seconds to explain what you and your company do. (2011: 322)

Therefore, we have to promote our products simply and briefly as if we were on the elevator. In addition, we have to make a promotion tweet looks natural. We don’t have to make it too commercial because people can easily tell that you are an advertiser, and people usually don’t like their Twitter timeline is loaded by advertisings.

The writer then made a declarative sentence below 140 characters which promote the posters in a simple and friendly style. It also contains a link to the blog which provide more information about the poster. The promotion is made in a Twitter account @ganzhar, which is owned by the writer.

Promotion 1:

I’ve made some posters that can help you in learning English

This is the promotion about all posters which are made by the writer. The writer wrote that the poster can help the customer in learning English because many people think that learning English is very difficult, and this poster will help them in understanding various kinds of English material. In addition, the writer also wrote the promotion in the first person to make it more friendly because the customer usually feel comfortable when getting the friendly-style promotion than the conventional advertisement.

Promotion 2:

These English poster look awesome

informs the customer that they will not only get a useful poster, but also the nice one.

Promotion 3:

This poster helps me to know the body parts

This is the promotion about body parts poster. The writer wrote that this poster would help the customer to know the body parts because body part is the important subject in elementary school, but there are many elementary school students don’t know how to tell the body parts in English. Therefore, this promotion told them that this poster will help them to know the body part in English. This promotion is made like a testimonial from the customer because it will increase the customer’s attention to this poster.

This is the promotion about tenses poster. This promotion is also made in a testimonial style like in previous promotion. The writer stated that learning tenses would be easier with this poster because many people think that learning tenses is very difficult. Therefore, it will persuade the customer who has a problem in learning tenses to buy the poster.

Promotion 5:

My friend, @billyjoeavajr, a junior high school student, has bought the poster

about tenses which I’ve made

This is also the promotion about tenses poster. The writer made a tweet which mention another Twitter user who had bought the poster to inform that there is an elementary school who bought the poster, so it will encourage other Twitter users, especially junior high school students, to buy it.

This is the promotion about family tree poster. The writer found that many beginners in learning English such as the elementary school students are usually asked to tell the family tree, so the writer told the consumer that they will be able to tell the family tree after reading the poster. This promotion is also made like a testimonial from the customer to show that this poster has really helped the customer in learning the family tree.

Question tag is important to make conversation alive, and this poster will help

you to use it properly

1.1.2 Problems and Solutions

During promoting on Twitter, the writer faced the problem in making an appropriate sentence which is usually used for advertising in English language because the style of sentence used for advertising in English language is different with the one used for advertising in Bahasa Indonesia. In addition, the writer also faced the problem in making the promotion for specific customer because the Twitter users came from various social classes, so it’s hard to make the promotion for a specific target market.

To treat the first problem, the writer had to read many books about marketing in English language, especially about internet marketing. In addition, the writer also read some examples of promotion around the internet. For the second problem, the writer had to make the language of the promotion appropriate for the specific customer, such as elementary student, junior high school student, and college student for gaining more customer from the specific target market.

4.1 Conclusion

Advertising is the important thing for the company to get many customers. There are many ways for the company to promote their products, and one of the most popular ways to promote nowadays is on the social media. Therefore, during the job training, the writer made a promotion on the social media Twitter.

Promoting on Twitter is different with other social networking services because we have to promote in a tweet below 140 characters. Moreover, the promotion had to be made in a casual and friendly style because the goal of this promotion is to get the attention from the consumer without disturbing them by some annoying advertisings.

4.2 Suggestions

There are some suggestions for both the English Department and the students as follows:

1. The English Department must give the entrepreneurship subject to the students before they do job training because it will encourage more students to take job training in the entrepreneurship field.

2. The students who take entrepreneurship as their job training must prepare and manage their company well in order to get a valuable experience in running the company.
