iv ABSTRACT

The present study entitled The Three Dimensions of the Main Character in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Movie Script is concerned with the analysis of the three dimensions; they are physiological, psychological and sociological dimensions of Snow White as the main character. This study also analyzed the relation among the three dimensions, they are; the relation between the physiological and psychological dimensions, the psychological and sociological dimensions, and between the sociological and the physiological dimensions. The aims of this study are to analyze the three dimensions of the main character and the relation among.

The data in this study were collected through documentary method with the following steps. The first step was downloaded the movie script from the internet. The next step was identifying the movie script providing information about the character to be analyzed. Such information was noted and used as the material of the discussion in this study.

There are three theories used as references in this study. The first theory is adopted the book entitled Theory of Literature by Wellek and Warren (1955). The second theory is adopted from the theoretical book entitled Practical Psychology by Karl S. Bernhardt (1953). The third theory is adopted from the Theory of Sociology: An Introduction, by Roucek and Warren (1963).

The result of this study shows that from the physiological dimension, Snow White is described as a new born baby, as a little girl then as a young lady with a beautiful face. From the psychological dimension, Snow White is pictured as a very kind girl and someone with precious goal. From the sociological dimension, Snow White is described as someone with a commander personality who can convince people to agree with her. She is also described as a princess then crowned as a queen when she grown up. The relation between the physiological and psychological dimensions of Snow White is that her beautiful face is in line with her beautiful heart and she is stated as someone who had a rare beauty. The relation between the psychological and sociological dimension is that her precious goal to release people from wicked leadership was supported by her personality as a commander who can convince everyone to begin a war to against that wicked leadership. The relation between the sociological and physiological dimensions of Snow White was showed that her caste was affected by her age. The young Snow White got her caste as princess and when she grown up, her caste changing from a princess into a queen.

1 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1Background of the Study

Literature is a creation which communicatively presents the author’s

intent for aesthetic purpose. It is an expression used by man to convey his ideas. In

addition to expressing ideas, it is also used to convey moral messages. The moral

message becomes an inspiration for the readers and they mirror themselves

through stories or images that are described and delivered by the literary work.

Literature has its genre; it can be divided into fiction and non-fiction. Fiction is an

imaginative story or fantastical work; like fairy tales, short stories even novels.

And non-fiction is the opposite of fiction; it contains facts such as autobiographies,

diaries and essays.

The fiction of literature can be analyzed using two approaches; they are

intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach analyzes the internal part

of a story; it consists of the analysis of theme, plot, setting and characters in the

story. While the extrinsic approach analyzes what comes from outside the story

A movie script used as the data source in this study is a fantasy movie

entitled “Snow White and The Huntsman” which narrates a beautiful princess

named Snow White and a huntsman, as her friend, who helped her defeat Ravenna,

her stepmother, who killed Snow White’s father and usurped her father’s throne

and power in the kingdom. The analysis focuses more on the character Snow White

as the main character in this movie script. Character is a person who takes a role in

a story and has the greatest influence on guiding people through the story.

Character is also an individual who is pictured by the specific description of three

dimensions of the character; they are physiology, which is the study of the human

body (Tokay, 1957: 1) and psychology that includes the human motivation, feeling

and emotion (Bernhardt, 1953:45) and sociology which is the study of human

beings in their group of relationship which studies interaction within and among

groups of people (Roucek and Warren, 1963:3).

Analyzing the main character in the movie script is interesting because it

gives a different sense to analyze the three dimensions of the main character by

reading the movie script. The main character is analyzed by seeing the description

of the three dimensions of the character; the physiological, psychological and

(10)

3 1.2Problems of the Study

Based on the background above, there are three problems of interest to

be discussed as follows:

1) What are physiological, psychological and sociological dimensions of the

main character in the “Snow White and The Huntsman” movie script?

2) What is the relation among the three dimensions of the main character in

the “Snow White and the Huntsman” movie script?

1.3Aims of the Study

The aims of this study are:

1) To explain what are physiological, psychological and sociological

dimensions of the main character in the “Snow White and the Huntsman”

movie script.

2) To describe the relation among the three dimensions of the main character

(11)

4 1.4Scope of Discussion

The literary work can be analyzed intrinsically and extrinsically. In

this present study, both are analyzed. The discussion in this study is divided into

two; they are:

1) The discussion about the physiological, psychological and sociological

dimensions of the main character in the “Snow White and the Huntsman”

movie script

2) The discussion about the relation among the three dimensions of the main

character in the “Snow White and the Huntsman” movie script.

Three theories are used in this present study, the first one is the theory

of physiological dimension proposed by Tokay (1957: 1), the psychological

dimension proposed by Bernhardt (1953: 45) the sociological dimension proposed

by Roucek and Warren (1963: 3).

1.5Research Method

Research method is a procedure used to collect information and data

systematically. The research method consists of three parts, they are: data source,

(12)

5 1.5.1 Data Source

The data in this study were taken from an American movie script

entitled Snow White and The Huntsman. The story about this movie script tells us

about a dark fantasy action story inspired by a fairy tale from Germany entitled

Little Snow White compiled by the Brothers Grimm. This movie script was

written by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini in 2011 and

presented as a film in 2012 directed by Rupert Sanders. The story in this movie

script tells about a beautiful princess named Snow White. This movie script was

chosen because the character of Snow White can be analyzed from the

physiological, psychological and sociological dimensions in detailed by reading

the movie script and also there were only few people who used the movie script as

the data source to analyze the three dimensions of the character; novel most

1.5.2 Method and Technique of Collecting Data

The data in this study were collected through documentary method. As the

first step, the movie script used as the data source in this study was downloaded from

the internet. The next step was identifying each sentence and dialogue in the movie

script that can support the analysis of the main character based on the three

dimensions of the character.

1.5.3 Method and Technique of Analyzing Data

The method used to analyze the data is the qualitative one. In contrast with the

quantitative method which produces number, the qualitative method can describe and

examine cause and effect relationship. The steps of analyzing the data involve the

following steps:

1) Identifying and analyzing the physiological, psychological and sociological

dimensions of the main character in “Snow White and the Huntsman” movie

script.

2) Analyzing the relation among the three dimensions of the main character in

LITERATURE REVIEW, CONCEPTS, AND THEORETICAL

FRAMEWORK

2.1Literature Review

There are some works which have similar topic and are still related with

this study. In this part, three undergraduate theses and one international article are

reviewed.

The first undergraduate thesis is written by Wiryawati (2007) entitled The

Main Character in the Novel Mirror Image by Sandra Brown. This thesis

analyzes the character of the novel based on the three dimensions of the main

character. The writer uses a theory of characters proposed from Kenney (1966:

27-28). The strengths of this thesis is the structure of the paragraph; it organizes

information and ideas to the reader from general ideas to the specific ones.

However, this thesis also has a weakness in regard to the writing format. The

writer does not mention or uses other’s thesis as a comparison to her thesis. What

is relevant is that this study uses the same topic and theory, which is about

characters and uses the theory of three dimensions of characters. The fantasy

romance novel is used in Wiryawati’s thesis, while a movie script of a dark

(15)

The other undergraduate is written by Andewi (2009). Her thesis is

entitled The Analysis of Main Character in Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia

“Prince Caspian” based on Physiological, Sociological and Psychological

Dimension. This thesis analyzes the three dimensions of the main character in the

novel. The writer uses a theory of character proposed by Kenney (1966: 27) and

three types of characters based on the function and position proposed by Tarigan

(1993: 76). The theory of characterization from Di Yanni (2001: 56) is also used

as well as the theory proposed by Warren and Wellek (1955) which mentions

various dimensions of characters. As a result, the writer mentions the main

character with the analysis of various dimensions. There is no error in spelling and

punctuation marks found in the thesis. The weakness of this thesis is in the scope

of writing. The relevance between Andewi’s with this present study is that both

discuss the same topic, that is, the main character and the three dimensions of

characters, but the data source used is different. An adventure novel , whereas a

dark fantasy action movie script is used in this present study.

The next undergraduate thesis which is reviewed is written by Budiman

(2009) entitled The Analysis of the Main Character in the Novel The Adventure of

Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. In his thesis, he analyzes the main character

and how the psychological aspects contribute to the motivation of the main

character in this story. As a result, the writer mentions that the main character is

Huckleberry Finn as written in the title of the novel with the psychological

analysis. In analyzing the character in the novel, the writer uses the theory of

(16)

9

Bernhardt (1953: 3) about theory of psychology. In this thesis, the writer does not

organize his paragraph well, so he cannot convey the information and ideas

gradually. As the data source, an adventure novel is used, while a dark fantasy

action movie script is used in this present study.

An international article is also reviewed in the present study. The

international article is written by Thomas Ventura (2002) entitled Psychoanalysis

in Allpsych Journal. It is stated that psycho analysis is probably the most widely

recognized theory in psychology and has been integrated into our culture through

novels, poetry, dramas and movie criticism. The terms such as unconscious,

repressed, ego and denial are used in everyday conversation to describe mental

states and reasons for human behavior. This study has interesting topic which

discusses the psycho analysis. The Ventura’s article focuses on the discussion on

psychoanalysis, while this study focuses on the discussion on the three dimensions

of the main character and the relation among those three dimensions.

2.2Concepts

The concepts used in this study are as follows:

2.2.1 Three Dimensions

Dimension is an aspect or feature of something. There are physiological,

psychological and sociological dimensions. Physiology is the study of the human

(17)

10

face (Tokay, 1957: 1); the psychology is the study of human mental such as

human motivation, feeling and emotion (Bernhardt) and sociology is the study of

human beings in their group of relationship which studies interaction within and

among groups of people (Roucek and Warren, 1963:3).

2.2.2 Character

According to DiYanni (2000), a character is the imaginary person that the

writer creates. Character plays an important role in a story, because the character

is someone who has the greatest influence in guiding people through the story.

Character can be imagined with several personalities and physical appearances.

The writer can be free to develop his imagination and idea to make the character

as what they want.

2.2.3 Movie Script

A movie script is a written work which consists of many scenes and made

for a movie or television show. The whole connected set of scenes in sequence is

called the plot. The movie script is written with a more complete and complex

description about the casts, like how they look like with a full description. The

(18)

11 2.3 Theoretical Framework

There are four theoretical frameworks used in this study. They are:

2.3.1 Theory of Three Dimensions of Characters

Great characters are critical components for great stories. To create great

characters, the author needs to add the three dimensions of the character in order

to make the character more real and the story more interesting for the reader.

Because no matter how interesting or innovative the writing skill of the author

might be, if there are no three dimensions of characters, it would be fall flat.

2.3.1.1 Physiological dimension

As Tokay (1957: 1) states that physiology is the study of the human body.

Physiological dimension can be analyzed by seeing the thing that can be indicated.

It is related with the appearance or physical condition of the character. It can be

seen through age, sex, and the things worn by the character and the other physical

appearances, such as the body shape, size, height, skin color and face. If the

author has already mentioned that thing in describing the appearance or physic of

the character, the character will look more interesting and the reader will enjoy

following the storyline.

2.3.1.2 Psychological dimension

Psychology is the study of human behavior. The psychological dimension

is related to the human mentality and emotion. The people’s manner as how they

(19)

12

psychological analysis cannot be seen by from the human appearance as the

physiological dimension, as it can only be seen by going deep into the character

itself. The psychological dimension of the character can be seen through the

analysis of the human motivation, feeling and emotion (Bernhardt, 1953:45).

1) Human motivation

Human motivation is a motive that prompts a person to act in a certain

way or at least develop an inclination for specific behavior. This human

motivation can make someone more impassioned in reaching something.

According to Bernhardt (1953:46-55), the human motivation is separated from

some factors such as their appetites, wants, emotion, feeling, attitude and social

motives.

a. Appetite

Appetite is the strong desire to satisfy human need. The appetite is a

condition when humans begin an activity which will be resolved by them and it

will satisfy them. When they have their own appetite, humans are motivated to

finish the activity that they begin before until it satisfies them in a certain way that

they want.

b. Wants

Wants are the needs that are generally possessed by every human being.

(20)

13

humans have their own wants acquired, they will find a way to fulfill their wants.

Human wants are modified based on their own experiences and ages.

c. Emotion

Emotion is a feeling that arises in human beings caused by something that

happens to him. The emotion here can be caused when someone is under the

influence of a fear or anger. Beside the influence of fear and anger, people’s mood

can also affects their emotion. The emotion can also affect the course of the

human action.

d. Feeling and attitude

Feeling and attitude is the experience gained by an individual. The

experience gained is not only from one aspect but more than that. The experience

can be a pleasant one or unpleasant, it is based on how the individual reacts with it

and how he feels about that. The pleasant experience will create a happy feeling

whereas the unpleasant experience will create a sad or dejected feeling. From the

feeling perceived by human, it will affect attitude. Such an individual will

approach and tend to repeat the experience if it is the pleasant one. In contrast, the

individual will withdraw himself from the unpleasant experience.

e. Social motives

Social motives are ambitions that drive people to accomplish certain goals

or tendency. The public opinion is very influential on the action to be taken by

(21)

14 2) Feeling and emotions

Feeling means a feeling which can influence the emotion. The

characteristics of feeling and emotion are explained by Bernhardt (1953: 96-99) as

follows.

a. Characteristics of feeling

Feeling is something that accompanies someone’s experience. It

plays important part in his behavior. The pleasant feeling is accompanied

by an attitude of approach and vice versa.

b. Characteristics of emotion

Emotion is something that occurs naturally from someone. Emotion

will come up when everything is mess or disappointing situation. When

someone is in such a situation, he will be angry or afraid, depending on the

situation at that time.

2.3.1.3 Sociological Dimension

Sociological dimension is the study between one person and the society or

social interaction. There are several points that should be paid attention to in

social interactions. According to Roucek and Warren (1963:23-112), the

sociological dimension is divided into personality, social group, social status

(22)

15 1) Personality

Personality is the individual’s behavior. The personality of someone can

be seen through their interaction with other people in social life. It consists of

attitude and habit which reflect the individual itself.

2) Social group

A social group is a group that consists of the social relation between two

or more people. There is an interaction between the members in a social group.

The social group can be divided into two; they are primary group and secondary

group.

a. Primary group

Primary group is also called face-to-face group; it is a group where

the members already know one another. This is a simple social group

where the member’s relationship is so close. The groups that belong to the

primary group are friendship relation, family even neighborhood group.

b. Secondary group

The secondary group is larger than the primary group. This group

involves less directly face-to-face contact; the reason is that this group is

too large. Kinds of the secondary group are political group, church

(23)

16 3) Social status system

Social status system is someone’s status based on his role in social life or

society. The social position in society or social group is called stratification which

makes someone have different social status level. This status level can be divided

based on castes and classes.

a. Castes

Caste in social status system means a social class of people which

they get by their birth and between which there is no vertical social

mobility.

b. Classes

Class or also called social class is a group of people based on their

social status or level. They become as members of the group because of

their birth.

4) Religious institutions

Religious institutions are the institutions built and related with the

supernatural activity.

5) Economic institutions

Economic institutions are the organizations which are established to

satisfy the basic economic needs, such as a need for food, clothing, shelter and
