Number of air transport user has a positive trend during 2001-2005, both for domestic and international passenger. This positive trend can be seen from number of arriving, departing and transit passenger. However, growth figure for domestic passenger is bigger than international passenger.Domestic flight passenger rose about 21% while international passenger only rose 4%. This is because air transport service for domestic flight increased due to increased competitiveness among air transport service industry for passenger.
Meanwhile, for freight air transport, number of user fluctuates. For domestic freight, user declines during 2001-2002 but during 2003-2005 the trend increases both for loaded and unloaded. But on the opposite side, for international aircraft cargo during 2003-2005, although loaded freight increased, unloaded freight declined.
Airport is one of main supporting facilities for air transport service. Therefore, improvement and development of new airports will smoothen air transport and this will eventually support the economy through trade and tourism. At present, five busiest airports are Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), Ngurah Rai (Bali), Djuanda (Surabaya), Polonia (Medan) and Hasanuddin (Makassar). Infrastructure development should be put to attention by the government and
private sectors. Development should be applied physically and to the human resource as well.
