An Analysis of Types of Errors and Common Errors in Students’

Simultaneous Interpretations of Ban Ki-moon’s and Tanri Abeng’s Speech

The study aims at identifying the types of errors and the common errors found in students’ simultaneous interpretation products. The participants of the study are twelve students of English Language and Literature study program who have learned Liaison Interpreting subject. To answer the research problems, the research employs a descriptive-qualitative research design. The data are obtained

from students’ simultaneous interpretation products of Ban Ki-moon’s speech

renditions from English to Bahasa Indonesia and Tanri Abeng’s speech renditions from Bahasa Indonesia to English. Twenty four students’ transcriptions are analyzed based on Barik’s general classifications of types of errors in simultaneous interpretation (1971). The findings reveal that there are 200 errors found in students’ simultaneous interpretation products. The types of errors found are skipping omissions, comprehension omissions, compounding omissions, qualifier additions, mild semantic errors, gross semantic errors, mild phrasing changes, substantial phrasing changes, gross phrasing changes and grammatical errors. In addition, it is also found that comprehension omission becomes the most common error in overall students’ simultaneous interpretation products (37 occurrences or 18.5% of 200 occurrences)

Penelitian yang berjudul “An Analysis of Types of Errors and Common Errors in Students’ Simultaneous Interpretations” bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis

-jenis kesalahan dan kesalahan umum yang ditemukan pada hasil interpretasi simultan (simultaneous interpretation) siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif-kualitatif. Data diambil dari hasil interpretasi simultan siswa tentang

terjemahan pidato Ban Ki-moon dari Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia dan

terjemahan pidato Tanri Abeng dari Bahasa Indonesia ke Bahasa Inggris. Sebanyak 24 transkripsi interpretasi simultan siswa dianalisis berdasarkan teori klasifikasi umum jenis-jenis kesalahan dalam simultaneous interpretation yang

digagas oleh Barik (1971). Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa secara keseluruhan terdapat 200 kesalahan yang ditemukan pada hasil interpretasi simultan siswa. Jenis-jenis kesalahan yang ditemukan adalah skipping omissions,

comprehension omissions, compounding omissions, qualifier additions, mild semantic errors, gross semantic errors, mild phrasing changes, substantial phrasing changes, gross phrasing changes dan grammatical errors. Selain itu,

comprehension omission menjadi jenis kesalahan yang paling umum ditemukan pada keseluruhan hasil interpretasi simultan siswa (37 kejadian atau 18.5% dari 200 kejadian).
