Learning grammar becomes crucial for English learners, especially when learners conduct the past tense in spoken language, rather than in written language. Therefore, the general purpose of the study was to describe the use of speaking task series in assisting the way of second language learners produce past tense verb in retelling a story. This study used descriptive method under the research framework of a qualitative study. The participants were three English Department students, around 20-21 years old, using convenient sampling. They were told to retell a story from a movie titled Granny O Grimm. They did it four times, in series. Their performance was analyzed by listing, counting and describing the correct use of past tense verbs produced. The finding showed that students improved their score in the correct use of past tense verbs. They could reduce their mistakes in great number during the tasks. They also produced Monitor which could correct their mistakes while they were speaking by themselves. These findings may suggest that task series could be used as an alternative to conventional method in teaching past tense verbs in the classroom.
